This piece was formed from a foot square flat sheet of 3/16" copper. It was originally planned to be a low relief tile in the lobby floor at the Illusion Theater, but was displaced by other images which were requested. It was reworked as a high relief image similar to the "Buffalo soldier" sketch chased in low relief.
The figure was pounded out from behind and the background chased down from the front and new detail added. The detail lines put in to define the collar in the low relief version created stressed/weak spots which cracked when the metal was stretched to create the high relief. The welds where this was repaired can be seen from the back.

You can also see the repoussé hammer marks left from pushing out the face, nose, and portions of the hat, and the soft curves and bumps left as the edge of the hat was chased in from the front.

The relief is about 3 1/2 inches.

The piece took about 3 days to make. It would have been about half that if I had known where I was going when I started.
