backyard foundry
Just finished a homemade furnace to melt bronze. It's made out of 24 #23 insulating bricks. It holds a crucible that holds 35 lbs of bronze. Air is supplied by an old vacumn cleaner blower. It burns LPgas, 5-6 gallons/hr. The bricks are mitered 12.5 degrees on the sides so that 12 of them make a cylinder 1.5 bricks high or 13.5 inches. The rest make a base The cylinder is held together with large SS hose clamps. The bricks are$3/ea at Smith-Sharpe. I have a 100 gal LP tank but 4-50 lb cylinders or 2-100 lb cylinders will do nicely manifolded together. Smaller tanks freeze up. More details available, also pics for anybody who wants more.
