RIddle of Steel

No, not the silly question posed to Conan... But exactly where in Minnesota can you get decent stock at a decent price?

Places I have found so far, but haven't ordered from yet...

http://www.acmetals.com/

http://www.discountsteel.com/

http://www.nssss.com/

http://www.midweststeelsupply.com/

http://minniron.com/

I'm sure I'm missing a ton.

Any feedback on any of the above? Any scrap services in the Metro, I'm North-West of the Metro, that allow us to buy scrap metal from them?

If you are looking for just A36 which is what most people are forging when they are using "mild steel" it seems that Discount Steel is the place most folks in and around Minneapolis use. I am a Garelick's guy myself as they have worked with me well for some odd stuff I have needed. They are both within a quarter mile of each other on 2nd Street North in Minneapolis.

If you are looking for small amounts that you plan to heat-and-beat I would suggest going in to Garelicks and ask the guy in the yard both where the surplus steel is. It is pot luck whether there will be anything usable to you in the surplus section when you are there but if there is it is cheaper than buying new steel. I don't know if Discount has the same setup.

If you are looking for odd sizes or special specs, like if you wanted 1018 or 1008 instead of A36 you'll probably need to talk to one of the sales guys inside and get it special ordered. For A36 flats, round, square, tubes, and angle they have pretty much had whatever I have needed.

Now if you are talking tool steels, well that is another question entirely.

And, just because I am a big fan of the original Conan:
"For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. [Points to sword] This you can trust."

Problem is, I really don't like going to Mlps. I don't even like driving through there. Finding time to head down there during a work day is problematic.

IOW... If I can find ANY other source in the North/North-West metro I'd prefer that option. Has less to do with laziness and more to do with having very narrow windows of opportunity.

If you want to avoid Minneapolis and want something in the northwest you could try Crow River Farm Equipment Co at 17685 53rd St NE, Rogers, MN (763) 428-4404. The prices aren't as cheap as steel yards and the selection is not as great but they also have a pretty good selection of hardware for a good price. Seemed to be fine people to work with the one time I went there. They don't have a website and I don't know if they deliver.

As for picking through scrap, lots of places don't do that any more unless you have an in with them. Sometimes not even then. Liability issues if people get hurt and often the amount of money they make from it isn't worth the hassle. People pretty much has to cultivate their relationship with either scrap yards or shop that makes scrap and then they are understandably hesitant to disclose their steel fishin' hole.

The only reason I have a decent source for scrap is because my brother welds for a place that generates a lot of drops. If he didn't work there I don't think I would have the time (let alone the social skillls) to cultivate a strong enough relationship to get my hands on their steel.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
