Inexpensive bandsaw for thinner metals

Unread post by Darryl Ponder » Tue Apr 09, 2013 6:25 pm

I bought an inexpensive used Milwuakee Portaband that had been refurbished by a local Twin Cites man. Sorry, but I forgot the man's name. Look for his occasional ads on Craigslist as he does refurbing of used Portbands for some spending money and the saws are typically around $125; not at all a bad price for a Portaband with lots of life left and that has had all the parts checked or replaced as needed.

I made a jig out of some plate that replaces the stock stop and I mount the whole thing in the post leg vise. The saw's power switch is tied in the "on" position with some velcro and an inexpensive momentary contact foot switch from Harbor Freight is used for power control.

Using the stationary vertical Portaband for things like sheet metal and smallstock is much more convenient than using my horizontal 4x6 saw in the vertical position. It is also great that I can store this bandsaw on a shelf, given my very limited shop space.
