New blown forge

Unread post by Jim Moenck » Sat Apr 30, 2016 4:20 pm

I finally decided to build a blown gas forge. The venture has served me well but I wanted to be able to dial in temperatures when I make Damascus steel for my knife blades. I finished this last week and gave it a quick test run, doing some work on the hammer head material for class next weekend. I ran it on 2 lbs of pressure, and the least amount of air thru the blower. I plan on testing it on Damascus next week, and I'll need to reach temps of about 2350 degrees. I must say, it is nice to have the PID to verify what the temp really is.

Nice! Does this one have the ribbon burner you were working on or something else?

I had been considering a blown forge for a while myself. Glad you did it first so I can wait until you perfect it and then copy you! ;)

Yes, it is the ribbon burner that I was working on. I haven't used it enough to know just what it will or will not do. It is louder than I expected it would be, but not as loud as the venture burner on my old welding forge. The body on this is longer at 18". I do need to rig up a blower to shoot air upwards in front of the door to take the heat away. My hands and arms get pretty warm when I pull the metal out.
