Learn all about Hossfeld benders at June 9 Guild meeting

The Guild of Metalsmiths invite all members and their family members to attend the June 9 membership meeting at Flint Rock Ridge Forge, Dick Carlson, blacksmith, located on Highway 316 near Hastings, Minnesota.

The meeting begins at 6:30 PM with a potluck supper--bring a dish to pass. The meeting will encompass all you ever wanted or needed to know about Hossfeld benders.

Dick Carlson is the host for this meeting, and he hastens to note that the map to his place (printed in the centerfold on pages 10 and 11) should be followed carefully, as Highway 316 (Red Wing Blvd) is closed right now due to construction. Watch for the anvil sign!

If you're coming from Hastings (north), take Highway 61 to 190th Street, then turn right on 316--local traffic. Dick's house is .7 of a mile south of 190th.

If you're coming from the Red Wing area (south), take the turn off on Highway 61 to the Treasure Island Casino and follow that road to Highway 316. Turn right on 316 and go .3 of a mile to Pine Ridge Road.

Information about Hossfeld benders can be found on their website: www.hossfeldbender.com

In addition to tubing, the benders can...

Bend Pipe and Conduit

Bend Eye Bolts, "S" Shapes, etc.

Guild educational grants

There is grant money available for Guild members to study intermediate and advanced metalworking techniques.

The Guild educational grant program is designed to bring new skills into the metalworking community. Participants are given money to pay for a portion of their expenses and are expected to learn some new or poorly understood skill, and then to share what they have learned with other members and the public through an article in our quarterly magazine, "The Metalsmith." They're also expected to lead a workshop on the topic (or other educational service approved by the board).

Application forms are available from the president or treasurer at a regular meeting, or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to:

Education Committee begins planning for 2004-2005 class offerings

Did you know the Guild of Metalsmiths offered 25 classes during the 2003-2004 year? I think this is outstanding! What impresses me the most is the fact that so many people are so willing to give their time and share their talents to help perpetuate the craft of blacksmithing and metal work. To all who taught a class, or helped out with a class, we thank you.

The Education Committee met last month to begin planning for classes to be held during the 2004-2005 year. We have set the dates for the Beginning Blacksmithing Classes, and are in the process of selecting classes we think the membership wants to have offered. As these classes become available, they will be posted on our website for you to preview, and announced in the Forum when it is time to register for them.

In order for these classes to be successful, we need people to volunteer as instructors and assistants. This is the only way the Guild can continue to offer these learning opportunities. Next month in the Forum, we will be soliciting for teachers for the classes we have selected to offer this year. I encourage everyone to consider teaching a class, or to assist teaching a class in the future. If you would like to volunteer, contact me by e-mail at jrmoenck@yahoo.com or call me at 651-735-4461.

Stanaitis on membership: Pete suggests we go back to annual dues. He was part of the Board when quarterly dues started. Idea was to make it easier for folks to join mid-year, but instead we made it harder for folks to understand WHEN they need to renew. No other clubs that Pete belongs to have this quarterly process.

Motion made by Moenck and second by Fick to go back to annual dues. Discussion followed of the quarterly system in relation to other groups. There is some sympathy for those who find January dues difficult. Initial thoughts are that publications would continue through January and February if member dues are delinquent. Reasons for delinquency include people do not check their renewal date. A result is that we have difficulty concluding what the active membership is (publishing quantities). We do not know what the burden of quarterly dues have for Gordon Barr, the keeper of the database. Mike Frattalone (treasurer) likes the quarterly system now in effect.

The motion was amended to: Go back to simplified billing to stay in conjunction with our fiscal year. Use a two month grace period for publications. Implementation is on the condition that we come up with a good transitional plan. Note that for two thirds of the paid membership (205) there is no transition issue. We table the motion.

Stanaitis on marketing: Pete suggests The Guild needs a marketing focus for the conference raffle, for conference attendance and for anytime the Guild wants to `sell" an idea to the public or to the membership.

Minutes continued on page 8

Vol 6 Issue 6 The GoM Forum Page 7

Minutes, Guild board meeting May 12, 2004 (continued from page 7

Perhaps a marketing committee is in order (publicity committee?). Do we have any members trained in this discipline who would share their skill with us? Is there a member who would act as an advisor to other committees as needed?

Item 1 A. In recent years we have not gotten satisfactory returns from the conference raffles and events. In the far past the raffle prizes were obtained at little or no cost to the Guild. Lately the items have been obtained at higher cost without greater returns from the event. We seem to be putting all our efforts into getting the prizes in place but very little if any effort into selling the tickets. We may not know how.

We need to determine where do we want the profits to be. Are we willing to do something to change?

We need to define what the purpose of the raffle is, (attendance, profit, xxx?). We need to do what needs to be done to meet the purpose to the best of our ability. If we can't meet the objective, we should either change the process or eliminate the event.

The program committee can work on the "supply" side. This needs help on the marketing end unless we do not care about the sales end of things.

Letter from Bob Walsh: Bob Walsh submitted a letter supporting his "studio tour report" on the shop of Lew Chowen. His point is that he thinks his pictures of an outstanding piece of work deserve color printing for the Metalsmith magazine. What followed is a discussion of the cost of printing the Metalsmith. There had negative reaction to the last use of color for the Metalsmith because of the cost. With the discussion of color and cost, Mike Frattalone offered the publication of the Minnesota Water Garden Society as an example of color printing available. Mike will see what cost structure that printer would offer to The Guild.

Why do people leave The Guild? Pete ran a quick survey exercise of the board to develop and rank reasons for people leaving. He came up with 13 reasons from eight people. As an example, we focus on blacksmithing, and could better serve some who focus on non-ferrous. This is the beginning of what should be a project to see if the board can better meet the needs and expectations of the membership. Watch for this! Lynn Ford will work with Pete Stanaitis and Mike Frattalone to develop a first try limited interview of ex members.

Deadline for updating information and current membership is 15 June. Gordon Barr will prepare a format for voluntary information. Including member since.

Next board meeting is 14 July 2004. Agenda for next meeting. Remember to include a discussion of lifetime dues.

Adjourn at 10:03

24th anniversary of World Championship Blacksmiths' Competition

2004 marks the 25th Anniversary of the World Championship Blacksmiths' Competition at the Calgary Stampede. Although primarily a farriers contest, the committee continually strives to include a creative forging component to better represent the craft of the blacksmith.

This year we are introducing a mail-in creative contest for those unable to make the trip to Calgary. For more information check out www.stampedeagriculture.com and click on "EVENTS" at the bottom of the page, then go to "BLACKSMITH EVENTS."

For information and criteria for the "live" contest go to "World Championship Blacksmiths' Competition" then click on "Creative Classes" at the bottom of the page.

Event Description

This contest exists to allow blacksmiths to participate in the World Championships without having to attend the Stampede. Modeled after the incredibly successful Mail-In Shoe Contest, participants are asked to create an article of their choosing, using the materials and criteria described under "Regulations". The item will then be submitted for judging at the 2004 World Championships in July.

I have a 250# Chambersburg utility hammer that I would like to sell. It is virtually brand new with very few hours on it, about 40. It has the safety cap, about a $15K option, verifiable by contacting Chambersburg Engineering Company. A new hammer of this size will run $100K+ as quoted to me by CECO themselves. This one comes with a 15 hp Ingersol Rand three cylinder, dual stage compressor with 19 gallon tank. All you have to add is another 20 gallon tank to provide sufficient ballast.

I'm asking $8K for the whole shebang, FOB in the vicinity of Argyle WI. I would like to sell this as soon as possible.

May, 2004

Dear Affiliates,

As I write this, the 2004 ABANA Conference in Richmond, Kentucky is only two months away. Shortly, it will be "pack your bags time" in order to not miss out on a great time for learning and growing. The theme of "Design and Build" for this year's conference is being carried throughout the conference planning. Demonstrators will emphasize design in the project as they show you how to build it.

Three great nights of lectures are planned. Albert Paley will give lectures Wednesday and Thursday nights. Friday, right after dinner, Alfred Habermann will lecture, with a panel discussion afterward where you will be able to ask questions. An opportunity not to be missed! The Patient Order of Meticulous Metalsmiths will also be exhibiting their magic.

Interactive demonstrations are planned by Terry Clark and Peter Parkinson, who will spend their first day in the classroom, working with members to sharpen their design skills. Pack a sketch pad if this tickles your imagination. Selected designs will be built at their demo site Friday and Saturday, with audience members helping with the work. An opportunity just like "Traveling to England to work with two respected smiths, without the time/ airfare expense?" WOW!

A teaching station will be operating with "Hands On" opportunities for forging with the experts. Power hammer vendor Dean Curfman will host Uri Hofi at his site demonstrating his unique designs in steel. Vendor Tom Clark will have the renowned Alfred Habermann working on a chosen design project. A great opportunity to see two icons of the craft at work!

Visit the ABANA website at http://www.abana.org/membership/conference/

to see the complete list of demonstrators and events, interactive sessions to ask questions and share comments with panelists, a gallery tour on design… the opportunities seem limitless from here!

And not enough can be said to thank all the volunteers who make this possible…Thanks to all!

Vol 6 Issue 6 The GoM Forum Page 14

Letter from ABANA president, continued...

ABANA Board member and 2004 Conference Chair Dave Koenig has worked tirelessly with a dedicated group of volunteers to insure the conference will be MORE THAN YOU CAN EXPECT! Volunteers? A great group is already on board to set up and staff the conference. But YOU are wanted TOO! I know that each of you will act as a host as you attend and see an opportunity. Who knows? Just being a good host and escorting someone to a demonstration might lead to an invitation to ———?

One of the best aspects of serving on the ABANA board is the willingness of office staff, board and volunteers working together to further the education and opportunities for artists in iron and metals worldwide. I am constantly astonished, and MOST appreciative, of the time and teamwork volunteered towards this goal. Let me introduce board member, Dave Mudge as an example of extra efforts-Dave is the proprietor of MAGIC HAMMER FORGE and a founder/ former president of the Louisiana Metalsmiths Association. A "lifelong" artisan in various mediums and an artist/smith since 1985, Dave also enjoys working with web sites and has been a great asset working with ABANA's site. Dave's website is http://www.davemudge.freeservers.com/

Dave has assumed responsibility as Affiliate Liaison for ABANA and his reports appear on the ABANA website bi-monthly. But Dave is always looking to do extras for ABANA. The anvil drawing during the elections last year was a program Dave initiated and brought to fruition. Look for a really neat poster available at this year's conference in Richmond. Again, an idea Dave initiated, did all the artist design solicitations, posted and ran the judging web site and then worked with the conference chair to have the posters printed and made available at Richmond. These are just examples of Dave's efforts to "go the extra mile" for you, the members.

One of the great aspects of our organization is every one, from the newest novice to the oldest professional is treated equally and each has something to add. One of the great attractions of ABANA was stated by Francis Whittaker, "No matter how long you are in this, there is always something new one can learn!" And that when Francis was 92 years old!

So be positive and constructive in your actions, share the knowledge, and forge safely.

Looking forward to meeting each of you at Richmond!

Don

Editor's note...

If you received your Forum last month and noticed that your membership expiration date on the front cover seemed to be wrong, you are probably right. We switched to a new printer last month, and the expiration date for every member said 2004.1.

This issue should have all the dates corrected. Thank you for your patience during this transition time, and apologies for the confusion and anxiety caused by this.
