"Our friend and fellow blacksmith Pete
Fuchs from Avon, Minnesota started
working in his father's blacksmith shop in
his boyhood. Thus began his lifelong
interest in metalwork.
Pete is now 83 and has recently
encountered some of the usual health
related problems that one could expect at
this stage of life. Pete has always been a
mentor to those who shared his interest in
the trade. Through most of his career he
was a part of Americana, producing
industrial and farm related work, including
wagons, sleighs, cutters, sleds, mold boards
and plow lays. His talents go beyond the
craft of industrial blacksmithing. In
retirement, Pete took up knife making, he is
an avid sportsman, and produced some of
the finest fishing spears you will ever see.
Pete is also an inventor
and designed/built many an odd
contraption, such as his futuristic Corvair
powered three wheeled motorcycle
Some of you know Pete, some of you don't.
We have a card for him, but there isn't
enough room for all of us to express our
thoughts, so we got this book for you to
write a little note to Pete. Please keep it to
one page so we have room for all to write.
Please sign the card and keep it close
together We are keeping Pete and his
family in our thoughts and prayers, and
hope that you will too."
Brian Johnson accepted for Pete, the
induction award into the Northern
Minnesota Metalsmiths Hall of Fame. Pete
gave so much of himself to others who
wished to learn about blacksmithing.
How fleeting is time, we all expected to see
Pete at the forge once again at during the
annual Pioneer Days in Albany. Pete will
be missed by all of those who had the
pleasure to have known him.

Commission Opportunity
The Gateway Trail Association is interested in
finding an artist that might create some
sculpture of a very durable type to afford and
interesting experience for trail users. A
suggestion would be to create a piece that
would evoke something about the past land
use along the trail - e.g.: farming railroading,
moon shining, native Americans etc. Please
give ma a call about this if you have any ideas
about who might be in position to do such a
work. There are funds to pay for the art.
Welded iron would be durable!

How to Develop Your Own Problem Definition and Solution Process and How to Produce Effective, Persuasive Presentations.
---A one day seminar for Guild members by Pete Stanaitis.
Course Description:
You will have a chance to calibrate your own level of knowledge in these important areas.
The course will focus upon the development of presentation skills for both business and for personal use. These
skills can be further developed and broadened so that students can diagnose situations and develop solutions to a
very wide range of problems- well beyond the formal presentation arena.
Outcomes:
1. Students will take home with them a written tried and true "formula" for developing persuasive presentations
along with the basic skills needed to properly use the "formula" immediately in real-life business and personal
situations.
2. Students will have prepared and delivered one presentation of their own and will have heard and critiqued the
presentations of several others to help them to get "ownership" of this powerful process.
3. Through exposure to the previously mentioned developmental books, I hope to convince every student to
obtain, read, study and personally absorb all 3. I will make the sources of these books available to the students.
!!!We will have room for 6 students and for several dozen observers!!!
Observers will have the same involvement in all the lectures as the students but will mostly watch as the
presentation process develops. I (Pete) estimate that an observer will gain at least 60% of the day's "learning"
potential, and even more if they practice what they see when they go home.
Cost: Student: $20.00 Observer $10.00 Lunch: Bring a bag lunch.
Date: Saturday, July 14th, 2001 Time: 9 AM to 5:30 PM
Location: To be determined, based upon the number of people who sign up. All registrants will receive
separate additional seminar (and location) information well before July 14.
Contact Information: Contact Pete Stanaitis, 2476 10th Av. Baldwin, WI, 54002, phone 715-698-2895,
email: spaco@win.bright.net with any questions you may have.
Registration Information: Registration closes July 6, 2001. The first 6 applicants who request "Student"
status will get it. After that, student applicants will be offered an "Observer" seat and any cost overages
returned. Registration can be made by mail, email or by phone. Postmarks and time stamped emails or phone
messages determine student/observer role for those requesting "student" status.
