The June Meeting:
The Meeting was held at the Little Log House
Threshing grounds south of Hastings on 220th
street.
President Dave Feterl called the meeting to
order.
Committee Reports:
Financial:
Mike Frattalone reported $19,549 in the
treasury and 315 members. The 501C3
paperwork is just about finished.
Education:
Bob Johnson reported that the June
Hammer in at Nowthen was on track. The
Instructors Workshop was organized and 15
new instructors were being trained to teach
the beginning classes.
Bryan Steckman reported that the Nowthen
blacksmith shop was ready for the Hammer
in June 22-23-24th and required only a
little work to finish up an awning/shutter
and doors for the Threshing show.
Program Committee:
Al Olson noted the Next meeting will be at
Dave Mariette's in Rosemont and that the
program would be a presentation by Dr.
Michael Blue. A Damascus Knife Maker as
well as a Physician. Dr. Blue will discuss
ergonomics (how to work without hurting
yourself) and other shop safety issues as
well as showing us something about
Damascus knives.
Call for volunteers for the fall Conference.
Publicity:
Gene asked for volunteers to verify phone
numbers in the directory before we publish
it. The post office gives us your new

result a fair number of the phone numbers
are outdated for people who have moved.
If you have moved or just have a new phone
number you want in the directory. Send it
to: Gene Olson, 8600 NE O'Dean Ave. Elk
River, MN 55330-7167.
(Volunteers!!!! Please get the
phone numbers on your lists
verified and send them to me.
Thanks,
Gene )
ABANA report by Dave Mariette:
The 2002 ABANA National Conference
will be in LaCrosse. Samples of the Anvil's
Ring (ABANA publication) were shown.
Auction:
The copies of the " Anvil's Ring" were
auctioned off by Roger Degner along with
some refractory donated by member Doug
Johnson and other items.
The Program:
The demonstrator for the evening was Tom
Latané. Tom first showed us a slide show
about all the steps that he had gone thru to
create the Neptune statue for the Museum
Gateway in Milwaukee, as well as a short
retrospective of his evolution as a smith,
with several shots showing his early (16
years old) smithing setup out east and
progressing from there.
After the slide show Tom demonstrated
chasing a face into a piece of 1/8 pure iron
sheet which had been mounted in pitch.
(Tom allowed that he had gotten pretty sore
from all that out of position hammering on
the 650 hour Neptune project. This points to
a good reason to come and listen to what
Dr. Blue has to say about setting up your
work area, positioning your work pieces and
swinging your hammer so you don't wear
yourself out. August should be a good
meeting.)
We have not been diligent in awarding the
walnut plaque that signifies the completion
of Unit 1of The Blacksmithing Study Guide
to all persons who have completed the
Beginning Blacksmithing Workshop.
Therefore, some persons have not received
the plaque. These persons may receive
their plaque in one of the following ways:
1. Make yourself known to Pete Stanaitis or
Bob Fredell al a membership meeting of
The Guild.
2. Or, mail a sturdy self-addressed
envelope, at least 7x9 inches in size, with
$3.50 in postage affixed the envelope to:
Bob Fredell
3500-45 Ave. So.
Minneapolis, MN 55406
The plaque by mail offer expires on
September 15, 2001.

Subject: Paul Hubler
Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2001
I was very pleased to see your tribute to Paul.
(On the website. ed.) He was indeed a genius
with iron. My mother gave him a copy of
"Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain" but
he didn't need it. He could visualize mentally
what a piece would look like although he
couldn't draw at all. When he needed a
drawing he asked Marcia McEachron.

---A one day seminar for Guild members by Pete Stanaitis.
Final Call! I can hold registration for observers open until July 11. Just be sure to contact me by that date.
!!!We have room for only 1
student but there is still room
for several observers!!!
Observers will have the same involvement in all the lectures as the students but will mostly watch as the presentation process develops. I (Pete) estimate that an observer will gain at least 60% of the day's "learning" potential, and even more if they practice what they see when they go home.
Cost: Student: $20.00 Observer $10.00 Lunch: Bring a bag lunch.
Date: Saturday, July 14th, 2001 Time: 9AM to 5:30PM
Location: U of M St. Paul Campus, McNeal Hall, room 33 (See attached map). All registrants will receive separate additional seminar (and location) information well before July 14.
Contact Information: Contact Pete Stanaitis, 2476 10th Av. Baldwin, WI, 54002, phone 715-698-2895, email: spaco@win.bright.net with any questions you may have.
Registration Information: Registration closes July 11, 2001. for observers. The first 6 applicants who request "Student" status will get it. After that, student applicants will be offered an "Observer" seat and any cost overages returned. Registration can be made by mail, email or by phone. Postmarks and time stamped emails or phone messages determine student/observer role for those requesting "student" status.

Announcing the First "Metalsmith Crawl"
Please NOTE CHANGES!!!
Last chance to plan to come with us on Saturday, July 21 to visit 5 in the Twin Cities area. All 5 shops will be open from 9AM till 5PM for you to browse for ideas on planning or improving your own work areas. Whether you already have a shop or are just thinking about one, this "crawl" is for you. Note that this event is labeled "metalsmith" crawl. This is because most of our members' shops are used for several aspects of metalworking, not just blacksmithing, for instance.
See the attached maps for directions. The exact addresses (and phone numbers in case you get lost) are given below. Note that there has been a change in the route. We will be visiting Dave Mariette's shop instead of Don Halverson's.
You can show up at any of the shops at any time of day. Or you can arrive at the starting/ending point (Myron Hanson's shop) by about 9 AM for possible car-pooling. We will have a few vehicles there and will leave his shop at about 9:30 for the rest of the shops on the list, in the order you see on the map.
The shop owners won't necessarily be demonstrating. They are there to answer questions about their shops; ie:
-Where do I start in planning a shop-What would you do differently next time?
-What's that thing over there? -What are the best features of this shop?
-How can I work with a small space? -How and where do you store stock?
-How well does your chimney draw? -What's most important? -etc, etc, etc.
We car-poolers will stop for lunch someplace when the mood strikes us.
So, come and join us, one way or the other, for a great chance to begin planning for, or to make improvements to, your own shop!
Call Pete Stanaitis at 715-698-2895 if you have ANY questions or if you would like to provide a vehicle for the car pool. There is no registration for this event. Just "come one-come all" and make these shop owners feel that it was worth it to clean up their shops for all of us. Note to other owners who have offered their shops: We will get to you in future "crawls".
Shop Owners, order of visitation by car-pool & key to map:
