Need HELP finding old "Metalsmith" newsletters

I am putting together a "complete set" of The Metalsmith to be raffled off at the Madness (sometimes called the Fall Conference) and I can't locate certain very old issues.

They are:
Volume 1, numbers 3 through 8
Volume 2, numbers 4 through 8
Volume 3, number 8
Volume 4, number 8
We are almost convinced that these issues were never actually written, so this is my last try. If you have any of these issues, please contact me and I will arrange to borrow them from you to copy. I will put one copy in the raffle set and one copy in our archives.
Thank you,

THE COAL

IS HERE

The new shipment arrived on July 6th.

Genuine Pocahantas coal like we had before.

NEW PRICING

The new Coal cost more than the last shipment. It seems that the Utilities are now bidding on clean coal instead of installing scrubbers on their stacks. As a result the price has gone up.

The New prices:
5 gal bucket *- $5.50 including sales tax.
(Guild measuring bucket not your 5 1/4 gal paint bucket with the airspace on top)
55 gal drum - $50 incl. sales tax.
Ton price (1/2 ton minimum) $180/T

The August Membership Meeting:
submitted by Gene Olson

August 8th, 2001 at the Shop of Dave Mariette, Rosemount MN.

The meeting was called to order by President Dave Feterl

Committee Reports:

Financial Committee:
Mike Frattalone reported money in the checking acct. 501C3 is under final review by lawyers and accountant.

Education Committee:
Pete Stanaitis reported that the next years classes were shaping up. The beginners classes are to start in November.
Gene Olson reported that the Welding Class went very well in spite of the heat, everybody learned something and we all had a great time.

Program Committee:
Al Olson reported that plans for the Fall conference were pretty well finalized. He asked for volunteers to use a sign-up sheet .
Each area has a chairman and we need volunteers. (See the article on the "Madness" later in the Forum)

The October Meeting is going to be at Dave Olin's shop in Mendota.

Publicity Committee:
The August Forum was printed and mailed. The program committee included 10 raffle tickets in each one. The tickets become active when you send in the stub with your name address and prise preferences on them. The prize preference thing is mainly in case you aren't at the drawing to chose, if you don't fill it in, aren't there, or haven't filed a preference statement an arbitrary choice will be made for you.

Old Business:

Coal Purchace
The Coal is here. (Pochahontas #3) It cost more so new pricing is in effect. (See the notice on page one for particulars.)

Guild Book Library:
There was discussion about establishing a lending library. We have some books now, but no procedure for lending them. We are working on a system.

Blacksmithing Study Guide Plaques
Bob Fredell reiterated his offer to send out plaques to those of you who finished the Beginners series projects. See your July Forum for details.

Next Meeting:

Next Board Meeting Sept 12th 2001 at Bob and Mary Fredells
General Membership October 10th at Dave Olin's Shop in Mendota.

Meeting Adjourned

Program: Dr Micheal Blue on shop safety
Mike put on his "Doctor Hat" and then informed us that if we wanted to call him Dr. we had best come see him at his office.

He gave a great talk on working safely in the shop (which will be summarized in an article for the Metalsmith soon.)

ABANA and 2002 Conference

The ABANA family program is calling for proposals for family program classes for the 2002 conference on June 5-9 in La Crosse, Wisconsin. We are specifically interested in creative classes that do not require any special equipment. Paper, and other fibers type classes seem to be popular. We've also had requests for paper marbling, broom making, and stained glass. We'll have tables and electrical outlets available and that's about it.

Here is the info we need for each class you propose to teach. We need all budget info up front, in order to avoid any unexpected bills after the fact.

I need a brief course description, list of any facilities or tools that you expect ABANA to provide, a list of items that class members need to provide, max number of students, and your fee. Your fee should include your travel, expenses, honorarium, absolutely every thing that you would want money for.

You do not need the itemize the fee for me. How you break up the expenses is your own business. I'm only interested in the lump sum fee that you need in order to offer this class at the conference.

This fee will be divided among the number of students in order to come up with the per student class fee. If you want the students to pay an additional materials fee directly to you, also include that amount with the class information. We will not be providing conference fees, travel compensation, or room and board to the family program teachers, so all expenses that you wish to be reimbursed for must truly be included in this fee that you submit to us right now.

You may email or snail mail this information to me if you like. When we determine a class

schedule, we'll then ask for more info like a bio and some photos for the course listings.

To the Editor,
I have just finished reading the August forum and would like to thank the board of directors for giving our two editors a "raise" and recognizing the service they do. Both of them do and excellent job and should be thanked for their contribution to the guild and its members. Us "folks" out of the metro area rely on the "rag" for 99% of the goings on and the Metalsmith for the excellent articles. Thanks a bunch and keep up the great job.

October
Meeting
Dave Olin's shop in Mendota
October 10th

question by

>>> Dave Brown>>>

>> Somewhat related question: Do similar questions arise regarding welding mild steel (1018) an higher carbon spring steels like 1060 or even up to 1095 (w-1) tool steel? Is welding rod a real consideration, or would pre-heat and post heat (to below the tempering temp of the piece of spring steel) be the way to go?

Valerie: Yes, to both those questions. And for those interested...here is my expanded version.

For heat treatable steels, consider if it is in the annealed condition or the hardened and tempered condition. And if in the hardened and tempered, does it make sense to anneal, weld and then heat treat after.

Anyway, if it is annealed and it is intended to then be heat treated, I choose a filler rod that matches the chemistry of the base metal..or in other words, will heat treat within the same temperature range and produce the same properties as the base after heat treat and temper.

The preheat for an annealed part is not the same as the preheat for heat treating. Make sure of this if you are using some reference material. Sometimes for tool steels, it (your reference) gives a temperature for preheat....and does not say if it is for welding or in preparation for heat treating.

Immediately after welding an annealed part, it needs to be stress-relieved (below 1100 degrees F), then re-annealed (or normalized) and then hardened and tempered.

If you need to be very picky on it, it is best to have a lower yield strength for the filler than the base metal so that any expansion/contraction differences are able to be "taken up" by the joint and not the parts themselves. That is, if you anticipate a lot of stresses in the iece as it is hardened and tempered. Ah, that is pretty picky and esoteric, but a nice to know if you cannot get an absolute match....and have a higher/lower yield strengtht choice. ANYway..

If the part is already hardened and tempered and you just want to weld it...then choose a filler that matches the PROPerties of the base metal.....and then you are assuming that there will be no further heat treat operations. Preheat, postheat is necessary, yes...and make sure it does not exceed the tempering temperature..or you willl soften the part.

A recap: for tool steels and hardenable steels (1045 and above, which means 0.45% carbon)...preheat always. Keep the weld bead small so that you are not melting and mixing the base metal more than necessary. Keep shielded from the atmosphere (good coverage of argon if TIG welding) try not to get finger print grease on the filler rod. Just think hoiw much surface there is to a filler rod in comparison to the filler rod itself. If it is rusty or greasy on the surface, that gets transfered into the weld bead. P.S. I only use TIG welding or silver braze to join tool steels.

A great reference book on tool steels can be found at crucibleservice.com....yet it is best to get the reference materials for that particular company (wnatever company made your tool steel).

Sincerely,
Valerie Weihman (Artist who is remembering that welding is just a tool and not an end in itself)

THE GUILD OF METALSMITHS

Beginning Blacksmithing Workshops

2001-2002 Program Year

The Guild of Metalsmiths comprehensive workshop in beginning basic blacksmithing processes is designed for people with little or no experience. After completing the beginning blacksmithing workshop, the student will be able to complete Unit 1, "Conquering the Basics" and Unit 2, "Beginning Projects" in The Blacksmithing Study Guide. Please note--We do not issue copies of The Blacksmithing Study Guide to non-members. Therefore, membership in the Guild of Metalsmiths is required in order to take the workshop.

The course of instruction.

Each workshop consists of four, all day sessions. The primary instructional emphasis is on the student learning and practicing the basic (also known as traditional) blacksmithing processes of fire control, drawing out, upsetting, punching, bending, twisting, slitting and heat-treating. Safety is always stressed. In these workshops, we concentrate on practicing the basic blacksmithing processes rather than immediately making an item because the blacksmith must be well grounded in the basics.

As the workshop progresses from one session to the next, students will make one, or perhaps two, hand forged items requiring use of the skills they have learned.

The cost of a four session workshop varies depending on your situation (see the registration form). The fee includes use of the tools that you will need, coal and iron stock that you will use, and a copy of The Blacksmithing Study Guide if you are a new member. Exception--if you already have a copy of The Blacksmithing Study Guide, you will not receive nor pay for a second copy.

Workshop location Minnesota School of Horseshoeing

6250 Riverdale Drive NW

Ramsey, MN 55303

Just north of Anoka, one block west of the intersection of Hwy 10/169 and Sunfish Lake Boulevard.

Time: 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All classes are held on Saturday.

Bring hearing and eye protection, appropriate work gloves and a blacksmith hammer to all sessions.

Sign up soon. These workshops will fill quickly and have historically been full by the end of the Fall Conference.

Please sign up for one of the three workshops listed below. Each workshop contains four sessions. Please select the workshop in priority order A, B, or C.

Forge Welding workshop

This is an intermediate level workshop

When? October 13 and 14
Times? 8:30 to 4 ish
Where? Minnesota School of Horseshoeing
6250 Riverdale Drive
Ramsey MN 55303
Phone at school: 763-427-5850 (not a Guild info number)
Who? Instructor will be David Mariette
Third consecutive year successfully teaching the Guild's welding workshop, and an eleven year veteran at the forge.
(Lordy. Has it really been that long? Scary!)
What? This workshop is an aggressive workshop that will teach you the basics of forge welding and more. It is strongly recommended that you have completed basic blacksmithing, and would consider yourself at or approaching an intermediate skill level. Heat management, some new forging techniques, as well as forge welding in a several configurations, is a brief synopsis of what will be covered. This workshop is held in a two consecutive day format because of the amount of ground to be covered, and the short amount of time to do it in.
There is little time to go back and review. Carrying the momentum from one day to the next is the key to the success of this workshop.
Cost? The cost is sixty-five dollars. It is a bit higher than most workshops because there is an extra day of rent for the shop and you will go home with what is left of your 1 pound can of welding flux, as well as a nice descaling brush. The brush could be optional if the cost is prohibitive. They cost about fifteen bucks. Late registrants will not have an option on this because all supplies have to be ordered well ahead of time.
What to bring? Basic safety equipment. (Safety glasses, a pair of gloves of which you will likely only use one. a good sturdy pair of shoes, and cotton clothing,) a good two pound (minimum) forging hammer. (Cross pein if possible) Tongs (2) for 3/8" round stock that grips two ways. All stock will be provided.
How large will the class be? The class will be open to the first seven registrants.
Send registration to David Mariette at 15325 Babcock Ave East, Rosemount, Minnesota, 55068

SEPTEMBER 29 30, 2001

Again this year we will gather in the valley . . . . . This year our lectures and demonstrators are Pete Stanaitis, Myron Hanson and Nathan Robertson. Pete will lecture on problem solving in the Blacksmith shop. Myron will show tools and techniques of repousse, and Nathan will do some HOT forging. We have been working hard on our wood fire kiln so we are planning to be ready to fire on Saturday. Terry Dennis, Phillip Ahnen and Doug Johnson will do the honors. We also will have some hands on and will do our traditional raku.

Our long term gate project is coming along well, we will be working to complete grapes, hinges and latch by the end of the weekend.

We have a couple of fiber projects still in the planning. Bring your rug frame if you're still working on one or want to start another. Karen Peters will be with us again to teach us yet another book. We have a different technique for our Tunnel Mill T-shirts, maybe you'll want to make one . . ... Cost for the above projects have not been determined yet.

Food and camping are available. You might want to bring a lawn chair. Bring safety glasses, ear protection and appropriate attire if you want to be around the demonstrations.

There will also be an open forge time for other blacksmith projects.
