Meeting adjourned
The GoM fall conference
(a.k.a. Metalsmith's Madness).
We migrated our separate ways on down to
the conference South of Hastings on Friday.
Hustle, bustle, lift, carry, pound, . . .
All those volunteers made short work of
setup. Al Olson did a marvelous job of
putting this all together. Myron Hanson,
Dick Carlson, Dave Fetrel, Dave Brown,
Michelle Terwilliger, Jim Scott, and lots of
other guys showed up and went off with the
demonstrator station crews, while Jim
Newgord, John Karpen, Chris Wilson and
I worked on the gallery. And thankfully
Irma Carlson and her crew of volunteers
kept us well supplied with coffee and
cookies. Corky's new lighting system was
put together, bleachers delivered and placed
by demonstrator's stations, wiring
connected, forges installed, lighting, heat,
gallery walls up and painted, lighting
installed. . .
and then
if you build it, they will come.
This year some storage had moved into the
main building and so a demonstrator had
moved to another which left more room for
the gallery so we repositioned the walls and
hoped for more stuff than last year ..
Wow, by the end of the evening my jaw was
hanging on my chest. Mary Fredell was
busy writing labels and Chris and Judy Stein
were hanging work as fast as they could. I
had never seen that much fine work at the
conference before. Beautiful gates, a whole
series of beautiful faux flowers, a photo
study of a power hammer project, hangers,
birds , a chair and table set, door knockers,
cast bronze, fountains, an incredible forged
bronze snapping turtle seven feet long, and
another shell for a "smaller"(5ft?) one, a
forged bare branch tree on a limestone
boulder, mixed media sculpture, glass topped
tables forged and/or fabricated, a few fine
found old tools, new tools, . By the time the
late arrivers had brought in their stuff the next
morning we were real glad we had the space.
Jack daSilva showed us some forming over
stakes and air and then a bit of detailing over
pitch. Elizabeth Brim showed off some of the
inflating techniques that have made her
famous. (In that sweet southern drawl of hers),
Walt Scadden showed a lot of traditional
smithing skills and talked a lot about running
a successful artisan business. All three of them
were delightful commentators, peppering their
discussions with anecdotes and jokes to fill the
time annealing and heating, and each of them
gave a slide presentation of work and recent
projects. Don Hammer manned a new English
wheel and demonstrated developing shapes
with it.
The auctions were fun, the rain didn't dampen
our spirits, five lucky people went home with
the raffle prizes , Krawczeski took home the
Anvils Ring issues, Vicky Brittain got the
complete set of Metalsmiths, David Hanson
from Duluth got the post vise, Dick Seaberg
won the gas forge, and Clinton Salo took
home the English Wheel.
And
&
.
suddenly the weekend was over.
And the one of me
that wanted to be four places at once
was very tired.
But what a weekend.
Gene

The Trip to Rome
A man was getting a haircut prior to a trip to Rome. He mentioned the trip to the barber who responded, "Rome? Why would anyone want to go there its crowded and dirty and full of Italians. You're crazy to go to Rome. So where are you staying in Rome?"
We'll be staying at the downtown international Marriott"
"That Dump! That's the worst hotel in the city. The rooms are small, the service is surly, and they're over priced. So whatcha doing when you get there?"
"We're going to go to see the Vatican, and we hope to see the Pope."
"That's rich!" laughed the barber. "You and six million other people trying to see him. He'll look the size on an ant. Boy, good luck on this lousy trip of yours. You are going to need it."
A month later the man came again for his regular haircut. The barber asked him about his tip to Rome. " It was wonderful," explained the man. "The hotel was great! They'd just finished a $25-million remodeling job, and now it's the finest hotel in the city. They were over booked so the apologized and gave us the presidential suite at no extra charge."
"Well," muttered the barber, "I know you didn't get to see the Pope."
"Actually we were quite lucky, for as we
toured the Vatican, a Swiss Guard tapped
me on the shoulder and explained that the
Pope likes to personally meet some of the
visitors and if I'd be so kind as to step
into his private room and wait the pope
would personally greet me.
"Sure enough, five minutes later, the Pope
walked through the door and shook my
hand! I knelt down as he spoke a few
words to me."
"Really?" asked the Barber. "What did he say?"
"He said, 'Where did you get the lousy haircut?' "
