Guild Educational Grants
Money for travel and tuition
There is grant money available for Guild members to study intermediate and advanced metalworking techniques.
The Guild educational grant program is designed to bring new skills into the metalworking community. Participants are given money to pay for a portion of their expenses (tuition and travel) and are expected to learn some new or poorly understood skill and to share what they have learned with other members and the public through an article in our quarterly magazine and by leading a workshop on the topic (or other educational service approved by the board)
Applications must include:
A resume of the applicant. (a verbal introduction may suffice if the applicant has been an instructor or otherwise demonstrated competence and reliability within the guild.)
The nature of the Class or project to be funded, dates, and times. The costs involved, including tuition, lodging, travel, meals. The amount of the Grant request.
Grants are reviewed by the members of the board of directors, meeting in committee (occasionally applications are referred to the education committee for their review and recommendations.)
Grants are judged on two major questions.
A. Does this proposal help fill a void in the Guild educational program?
B. Is the applicant at a point in their career where they can benefit from and then share with others the class/project to be funded?
Contact any officer or board member for more information.

The March Board Meeting:
submitted by Gene Olson

Wednesday, March 13, 2002
Fredell's 3500 45th Ave. So. Mpls, MN

The meeting was called to order by president Dave Fetrel.

The minutes of the previous meeting were reviewed and approved.

Committee Reports:
Financial Committee- Mike Frattalone- We have $26,551 in the treasury of which $5502 is in the educational grant fund which just received a check from Larson Publications due to the publication of another 300 copy edition of "Iron Menagerie." (ed note. Our continuing thanks to Pete, Bob, and Paul (wherever you are) for a gift that keeps on giving.) Taxes are paid, we have six thousand dollars more in the treasury than we did last year. There are 334 members.

Editorial Committee report: Bob Fredell, asked if moneys approved several years ago but never spent, were still available for software and equipment. The board, allowed that they were. Bob said the committee would come back to the next board meeting with a plan for using the money before proceeding.

Education Committee: Bob Johnson,
The season's workshop schedule continues. Note that workshops may be added sporadically, so keep an eye open for registration materials in the Forum.
A good sized group did a wide variety of work at Gene Olson's Altoid box workshop recently. Next Metalsmith will also have an article on the techniques, so we are looking for lots of entries for the Fall Conference Gallery/Contest.
Funds intended for tongs for the Guild toolbox have been returned to the Treasurer, as the order was not filled. Since that time, Mr. Duggan has donated over 20 pairs, which can be altered to fit our needs. Thank you, Richard.

Program Committee: Myron Hanson,
Planning for the fall conference is going well, raffle tickets are being planned and there will be a preliminary info sheet on the conference to hand out at the Northern Minnesota Spring Conference. The spousal activities program is still in the planning stages.
There are a lot of good people on the committee and work is going very smoothly. A lot more women volunteered to serve on the committee this year and its proving a real advantage because they often have a different take on the way things work. As a result we are addressing more issues and things should run more smoothly.

Publicity Committee: Gene Olson,
Forum is out. Need for new publishing software to make publishing the Metalsmith and Forum easier was discussed but no action was taken.

Old Business:
501C3 Update: papers are still shuffling from one government desk to another.
New Board meeting place: Fredell's house has been sold, the May meeting will probably be the last scheduled there. Mike is exploring one possibility, Marcia offered the committee meeting room in the Ford Center on 5th and 5th north Downtown Minneapolis which won't cost us anything, is open Wed nights, has ample parking, and a central location.
It was moved to accept Marcia's invitation and go ahead and set up the necessary arrangements with security. Mike will continue his exploration and final decision will be made at the May meeting.

New Business:
Grants:
Two Grants were approved:
One for $300 to Rome Hutchens for a forge welding class. Rome will be working with Dave Mariette to extend Dave's excellent program and give us another class on this subject.
The other to Marlaine Cox for $1115 will help her to attend a two week class at Penland in North Carolina on welded sculpture and the problems involved with exterior sculpture.
Myron Hanson brought up the possibility of doing a week long train the instructors workshop with repoussé artist Wendel Brochard. The idea was approved in principle, but Myron will come up with a more definite proposal for our next meeting.

Next Meeting:
General Membership - April 10, 2002 at Gladwin Machinery
Next Board meeting - May 8th, 2002 at Bob And Mary's

Re: The Program Committee:
At board meetings, Myron has repeatedly said what a great group of people we have on the program committee this year, how hard they are working, and how their attention to detail should make this one of our best years ever. Susan Wood called me the other day and asked if I could send her some mailing labels for the committee so that they could send out notices to each other more easily. I said, "Sure, who is on the committee?" and grabbed a post it note. I started writing and soon had to peel off the note and start another, and then another. I said, "WOW! That's incredible. Sue, Can you believe this group? The level of involvenet . . ."
"Yeah," she said. "It's really amazing and great to be part of.
"I just started my beginning blacksmithing class, and I am really impressed. Bob Johnson came by and introduced our instructors and told us about all the rest of the volunteer team and then stuck around to make sure everyone was off to a good start. Everybody was great."
Here is the list Susan gave me. If you see any of them, tell 'em thanks. And if you have any ideas about what could be done to improve our meetings and conference, places you think would be good to visit for a meeting, etc., tell them. We need all the help we can get.
Maybe next month we can talk about all those instructors, Eh? Bob? - ed.

Subject: [GoM] Thanks

Hi All:
I would like to say a sincere THANK YOU to Monty Bygd for putting on the excellent POZ tong workshop! Before Saturday, I hardly knew how to hold a tong and now I've made one!! Absolutely amazing!
I would also like to say thank you to all the other workshop instructors that have donated their time and personal assets to passing along their metalsmithing skills to us new folks. "The Guild" is an amazing network of skilled people willing to share their knowledge at a great personal time sacrifice. Every time I'm looking for some blacksmithing info on the Internet, I keep coming to links to our Guild members' web sights, workshops the Guild is sponsoring or just information a member posted.
This organization, as with all successful ones, has many dedicated artists who are willing to contribute greatly of their time and efforts.
You can all be proud to be a part of what, in my humble opinion, is the best network of metalsmiths in the U.S.!
Someday, when I have more time and have developed some identifiable skills, I Intend to "give back" what I can to the Guild. In the mean time, thanks again to all of you.
Very Sincerely,
Noble Nygaard

PS: I owe for 3 buckets of coal from the school of horse shooing. To whom do I send the check?

(okay, anybody else out there in the same boat?
Mr. Frattalone says:
"You can mail the coal payment to
The Guild of Metalsmiths
PO Box 11423 St. Paul, MN. 55111

That's the same address on the return label on the cover of The Forum or Metalsmith. Just be sure you send a copy of the coal billing slip or at least a note telling us what the check is for.)

"Welding for Sculptors"

This isn't a Guild activity, but rather a class taught by the instructor of last summer's welding class on her home turf, a technical college in Madison Wisconsin. If you are a Minnesota or Wisconsin resident this is an incredible deal at $101.01. Ask anybody that took Val's class at Gene's Studio last summer. It is a great place to start. You can try all sorts of different equipment and figure out what you really like and want before you invest money in any. You can learn a lot and Val is just fun to be around.-- ed.

Madison Area Technical College - Course number 621-199-001

When: May 20-24, 9:00am-4pm 2002

What: An introductory hands-on course for artists to learn about welding and experiment with welding equipment while making small sculptures or models.

Description: "Welding for Sculptors". An introduction to the safe use and operation of oxyfuel, stick and mig welding. Also oxyfuel cutting and plasma arc cutting. Mornings will concentrate on new information, demonstrations and practice. Afternoons are working individually or with instructor. No experience necessary: additional topics or more in-depth at request of students. This course is team-taught with two experienced welding instructors, one of whom has a BFA and an MFA in sculpture.

Additional topics that will be offered for those interested: Maquette (scale model) building, What to do when subcontracting work to a welding shop (how to communicate on paper and in person), welding different types of metals, creative approaches to metalworking (direct work or working with patterns).

Materials needed: Leather shoes or boots that cover the tops of the foot. Cotton jeans and long sleeve shirt. Leather welding gloves. Safety glasses required at all times in the shop (you provide). Metals for learning are provided. Additional metal cn be purchased in lab for a nominal cost if large pieces are needed.
