 Guild Educational Grants

There is grant money available for Guild members to study intermediate and advanced metalworking techniques.

The September Board Meeting:

Well, I don’t have a copy of the board minutes to give you, but I will say that we got a bit done.

Marcia got the scanner and computer she requested to make it easier to produce the “Metalsmith”. We approved grants, heard reports from those who had attended the meeting of our new sister organization in Duluth and elsewhere.

Some final details of the conference were discussed, and everyone was reminded that elections were coming up and we needed to find and endorse candidates for office.

The Fall Conference

Brad Silberberg, Karl Close, Michael Saari, Sherri Stanaitis, Charlie Yust, Dick Carlson, Mike Frattalone, Tom Barnett, Tom Phelps, Corky, John, and everybody else . . .

What a great weekend.

I know I learned a bunch, not the least that the gallery crew did a great job without me. Phelps, Barnett, Corky, John congratulations on a wonderful show. Mike and helpers handled the registration, the auctions. Sheri and Erma and all the family activities crew did a great job.

And when it was over, everything

karl.gifKarl Close talks about chasing faces

came down like clockwork. Sue Woods our clockmaker saw to that. Really great organization setting up and tearing down. Everything meshed.

Ya should have been there, we had a good time together.

Thank You

The 2002 Fall Conference was a great success! A lot of hard work made the weekend run smoothly. Thank you to all the volunteers (whether you were asked to help or simply showed up) who set up, took down, cleaned up and worked the front desk. Special thanks go to the

Program Committee for their excellent planning of the conference; to the Education Committee for staffing "Taste of Blacksmithing" in the blacksmith shop; and to the Publicity Committee for

a great job of telling people about the conference. Thanks to the suppliers for their donations, everyone who donated items to the auction and to AI Olson for designing and making the raffle tool box. Thank you Steve and Sylvia Bauer, for graciously allowing us to use your wonderful facilities. Finally, a big thank you to the demonstrators for sharing their knowledge and skills - you did a fantastic job.

With the successful 2002 Fall Conference behind us I invite every one to offer suggestions for demonstrators for the 2003 conference.

Once again, thanks to all for a great event!

From the Forum Editor:

Dear Members of the Guild,

Seven years ago, Chris Wilson was elected to the board, and Pete Stanaitis handed off the mailing list maintenance to me. Chris handed the publicity committee stuff to me and I did it during her term until Phil Plumbo was elected to the board. Phil took over it for several months and then left the Guild to pursue some post graduate studies and I was called on to step in for him, handle the workshop mailings and take his board seat.

Four years ago, I took it upon myself to add a bit of content to the monthly

brad.gifBrad Silberberg diagrams a portable jig for holding collars while forging them closed.

collection of workshop and meeting notices and this little rag was started.

I find now that the demands on my time and attention make it impossible to continue either as database manager or as publicity chair/editor.

This is a call for volunteers.

I will work with anyone or group of people to make this work. I have been doing this notice on a PC with Wordperfect and that has worked. I have also played with my mac and succeeded in doing a mockup version in Claris Works. I can help you get going on either platform.

Over the years I have tried to streamline the operation and make it work more smoothly. By using mail merge and printing the postal imprint we removed hours of label pasting and stamping time.

I am at a point where the sooner I can find somebody to take this over the better it will be. I can continure to help some but I have too many fences to mend to keep on as is.

Indeed, if there is someone who would like to take the last year of my current board term, I would appreciate it.

Sincerely,

Gene Olson, Editor the Forum

Call for Workshop Proposals

Last night, October 1st, the final preparations were made for the Seventh Annual Instructor's Workshop, which will be held on October 12th.

Each year, the Guild offers this workshop to instructors of the Basics workshops, and to those who have taught in the past. Participants of the previous year's Basics workshops are encouraged to join the instructor group, and this year, we have six new folks joining us. This helps us maintain a good instructor-student ratio in the Basics and those teaching have opportunity to improve their skills.

Many members continue to teach Basics year after year, and others go on to teach other workshops. We have the basics program pretty well in hand.

Recently, I have had feedback that the more experienced would like some offerings to fit their levels of skills and interests. Please contact any member of the Education Committee, if you have a proposal for a more advanced workshop, the committee will do all it can to help.

                                                     Thank you,

Bob Johnson

Forge Welding workshop.

shoeskol.gif

This is an intermediate level workshop

When? October 26th and 27th

Times? 8:30 to 4 ish

Where? Minnesota School of Horseshoeing

                6250 Riverdale Drive

                Ramsey MN 55303

Phone at school: 763-427-5850 (not a Guild info number)

Who? Instructors will be David Mariette and Rome Hutchings

This is Dave’s fourth consecutive year successfully teaching the Guild's welding workshop, and a twelve year veteran at the forge,

(Lordy. Has it really been that long? Scary!)

and it marks Rome’s first appearance since he took the forge welding series at John Campbell.

What? This workshop is an aggressive workshop that will teach you the basics of forge welding and more. It is strongly recommended that you have completed basic blacksmithing, and would consider yourself at or beyond an intermediate skill level. Fire management, hammer technique, as well as forge welding in a several configurations, is a brief synopsis of what will be covered. This workshop is held in a two consecutive day format because of the amount of ground to be covered, and the short amount of time to do it in.

There is little time to go back and review. Carrying the momentum from one day to the next is the key to the success of this workshop.

Cost? The cost is sixty-five dollars. It is a bit higher than most workshops because there is an extra day of rent for the shop and you will go home with what is left of your 1 pound can of welding flux, as well as a nice descaling brush. The brush could be optional if the cost is prohibitive. They cost about fifteen bucks. Late registrants will not have an option on this because all supplies have to be ordered well ahead of time.

What to bring? Basic safety equipment. (Safety glasses, a pair of gloves of which you will likely only use one. a good sturdy pair of shoes, and cotton clothing,) a good two pound (minimum) Cross Pein Hammer with blunted pein, Tongs (2) for 3/8" round stock that grips two ways. All stock will be provided.

How large will the class be? The class will be open to the first seven registrants.

INDUCTION HEATING FOR FORGING

!!A New Metal Heating Process for Forging!!

1 PM to 5PM Saturday, November 16, 2002.

To be held at Olin Wrought Iron, 1351 Hwy 13, Mendota, Minnesota. (See attached map)

Who should attend:

Every one who heats metals must see the benefits of Induction Heating and how it works. While not every member of the Guild of Metalsmiths may find the need for this important new process right away, this is the first demonstration of this important process aimed at our areaÕs blacksmithing community. It is especially adaptable to repetitious jobs, so the fabricators amongst us will find this demonstration especially interesting.

This equipment is electrically powered and uses radio frequency energy to heat metals. It has been used in the metals industries since the 1950Õs, but to my knowledge, has been little used by blacksmiths.

Some Advantages and Benefits to the smith:

-No heat in the shop- only the part gets hot

-Very fast heat cycles- Heat doesnÕt transfer down the part very far

-Ability to heat specific sections easily- No wasted time quenching sections that donÕt need heating.

-No dusts or gases generated by the process.- Environmentally clean, uses only electricity and cooling water.

-Inexpensive to run.- Uses electricity only when part is inserted into the machine. For example: A 15 KW unit heats 1 _Ó of a 5/8Ó diameter bar to 2000 degrees F at the rate of 450 per hour for about $1.50 worth of electricity.

Come to this FREE demonstration of Induction Heating for blacksmiths on Saturday, November 16, 2002.

Kelvin Spain, president of Raydyne Corp. will be demonstrating a 5 kilowatt induction heating machine for us.

Contact Pete Stanaitis at 715-698-2895 of you have any questions.
