The GoM Forum is published monthly by the Guild of Metalsmiths, St. Paul, MN.
It is intended as a community bulletin board, a place for all members to express their opinions, concerns, debate policy, propose projects & workshops. In short, to help us run our organization.

Guild Educational Grants
There is grant money available for Guild members to study intermediate and advanced metalworking techniques.
The Guild educational grant program is designed to bring new skills into the metalworking community. Participants are given money to pay for a portion of their expenses and are expected to learn some new or poorly understood skill and to share what they have learned with other members and the public through an article in our quarterly magazine and by leading a workshop on the topic (or other educational service approved by the board)
Application forms can be gotten from the President or Treasurer at a regular meeting or by sending a self addressed stamped envelope to

The October Meeting:
Show and tell.
Sarah Delaney came to the Guild of Metalsmith's Oct meeting with a nice stake she had made.
It was a long tapered stake, double bicked.
It was made from a cast off pick, the kind you use to dig a hole with.
Next time you see one with a rotted handle in a garage sale, think,
"Hmmmmmm, tool steel, close to good usable shape, nice mounting hole, etc. . .
There was a beautifully crafted fantasy battle axe. (Way too sharp for playfull gestures) brought in by members, Gary and Suzy Zahradka.
The program:
We were taken on tours of the museum. There were all sorts of interesting bits to be found. There were portable forges made to take to the job. A whole machine shop with a lot of old tools. The big turntable for turning locomotives around and feeding the various bays in the roundhouse.
It was interesting to discover that the Steam engines were actually cheaper to build than the diesels that replaced them. The difference was that steam boilers needed a lot of service and support personel. A steam engine spent 40% of it’s time in the shop with repairs, testing, . . . vs a diesel electric’s 5%. When diesels were adopted, almost 7/8ths of the repair facilities became redundant.

This arrived too late for official approval from one of the committees by press time, so I am just pasting it in as an article. Looks interesting Mike.
Blade smithing seminar:
It is my pleasure to announce another gathering for blade related learning.
I'm sorry for the short notice but I'm trying to coordinate strange schedules and the boss finally gave me permission...so I missed the newsletter deadline.
I anticipate another larger hammerin in the spring sometime and want to add to the list of great instructors as well as inviting some of those here this summer back again.
Eventually I'm going to try to settle on a twice yearly schedule if enough interest supports the work. I will announce any seminars to Guild Membership first or any one who missed a previous seminar on my waiting list, then open it up to folks around the USA. Rather than wait to have two next year, I decided to start the cycle earlier.
Who: Anyone interested in bladesmithing or folder making and anyone who missed out on the last seminar. Instruction by myself, Peter Martin and R B Johnson.
What: I have approximately 8 students signed up and will close this list at 15 to provide a more intimate session with project progress to a high level if possible. Cost $85.00 Class content will be folding knives of liner lock type and damascus steel/blade forging and welding.
We will also discuss heat treatment.
When: December 14-15, 2002
Where: Cannon River Forge, Cannon Falls, MN
Why: Because the last time it was too damn hot and opening the doors didn't do any good. It'll probably be too cold this time, but we'll be indoors with three forges and we can always open the door to let the heat out.
Besides, I got a lot of good feedback about how things went despite me not getting to see much being the forge monkey. But hey, I can function in that role pretty good, someday I might even get to use my own tools...or maybe Dick and Myron will paint that fence for me...
I'll need to know if anyone needs a hotel room and I'll forward information. We'll all be going out to dinner again Saturday night (14th) on my dime.
Call or email me if you have any questions. NOTE: The CRForge phone number has changed to 507-263-5808.
Yours in the fire,
Mike Blue

Custom Smith Puzzles
for your Kids, grand-kids
(or you)
Gene and Chris have been custom cutting puzzles with their laser.
We take your photo, print the image on mat board and cut it into a puzzle with the laser. We then print a light gray copy of the photo on a backing board and mount the puzzle border on that so the picture key is always there. Our special blacksmith puzzle has some pieces that look like anvils, tongs, hammers, drifts, chisels.
Bring your favorite photo of you in your shop to the banquet. Two custom puzzles will be awarded as door prizes.
For more information contact Gene or Chris. 763-441-1563

!!!Guild of Metalsmiths SPECIAL EVENT!!!!
!!A New Metal Heating Process for Forging!!
1 PM to 5PM Saturday, November 16, 2002.
To be held at Olin Wrought Iron, 1351 Hwy 13, Mendota, Minnesota. (See attached map)
Who should attend:
Every one who heats metals must see the benefits of Induction Heating and how it works. While not every member of the Guild of Metalsmiths may find the need for this important new process right away, this is the first demonstration of this important process aimed at our areaÕs blacksmithing community. It is especially adaptable to repetitious jobs, so the fabricators amongst us will find this demonstration especially interesting.
This equipment is electrically powered and uses radio frequency energy to heat metals. It has been used in the metals industries since the 1950Õs, but to my knowledge, has been little used by blacksmiths.
Some Advantages and Benefits to the smith:
-No heat in the shop- only the part gets hot
-Very fast heat cycles- Heat doesnÕt transfer down the part very far
-Ability to heat specific sections easily- No wasted time quenching sections that donÕt need heating.
-No dusts or gases generated by the process.- Environmentally clean, uses only electricity and cooling water.
-Inexpensive to run.- Uses electricity only when part is inserted into the machine. For example: A 15 KW unit heats 1 _Ó of a 5/8Ó diameter bar to 2000 degrees F at the rate of 450 per hour for about $1.50 worth of electricity.
Come to this FREE demonstration of Induction Heating for blacksmiths on Saturday, November 16, 2002.
Kelvin Spain, president of Raydyne Corp. will be demonstrating a 5 kilowatt induction heating machine for us.
"Kelvin has promised some terrific/discounted pricing on
both new and used equipment."
Contact Pete Stanaitis at 715-698-2895 of you have any questions.
