Guild of Metalsmiths
Metalsmith - V 18.1 :

Door knocker by Tom Latané

Tom Latané is one of the oldest members of our Guild and one of the finer smiths in the country.

In 1993 Tom demonstrated making this Door Knocker for the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland. This article is adapted from a printed version which appeared in the "Metalsmith" in May of 1994 on pages 10 -14.

If you want to print out this page, try THIS LINK to get a version with both pictures printable.

Tom made some very nice drawings for this article. click on the links below to see them. This project assumes a knowledge of intermediate blacksmithing. It calls for upsetting metal, fullering grooves, drawing, punching, chasing, and sheet work with chisels and repousee forming over a wood block. It is a recipe which an intermediate smith can interpret in their own way.

Working the metal to Shape

Finishing the parts

Detailing the handle

Making the escutcheon
