The anvil and vise are two projects that I built to show at The Guild of Metalsmiths Fall Conference.
The anvil is patterned after the German style Double Horn. The hardie is 1" square, pritchel hole is 3/8" in diameter, the height from the base to the top is 12" and the overall length 27". The anvil was fabricated from solid steel plate. The horn is made of 51/2" shafting shaped by a torch, gouged out and welded to the body. The main body of the anvil is 4 solid pieces veed out and welded together. The face of the anvil is 1" x 6" leaf spring welded to the body of the anvil. All welding of anvil parts are 100% with no voids or hollow areas. Weight of anvil is 220 Ibs.
The leg vise is 40" tall, the jaws are 6" wide, the acme screw is 1 1/2" diameter. I started with 1 1/4" x 3" solid rectangular stock for the front and rear jaw. The stock was forged and pierced to receive the screw. Material was added to rectangular bar stock to give more material in jaw area. For the spring I used leaf spring material, it opens the jaw very good. The screw was started by machining 3" round, then cutting acme threads 1 1/2" in diameter. The handle was 1 1/2" shaft, balls on ends of handle were formed and the remaining shaft was forged down to 3/4" round by using stop blocks on the power hammer. The base was of 2" solid plate cut to shape.
This was a very good learning project for me. I gained experience in many smithing techniques. For my next project; possibly some hand tools. I think I will get started now. Time goes so fast.
