SUMMARY:Forge Welding 2020 - Day 1 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Forge Welding 2-Day Class\nSaturday & Sunday\, February 22-23\, 2020\, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day\nLocation: Minnesota School of Horseshoeing (map page 7)\nInstructor: Dave Mariette\nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum: 6 \nForge welding. So\, you’ve seen it done. It looked so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask? David will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things\, there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing. Starting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll begin with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience move on to a few more advanced welding configurations. Possible projects this year: a flux spoon\, tripod\, chain\, leaves & tendrils “bouquet” and if time allows\, a basket twist. \nPrerequisite: Solid basic forging experience. We’ll be using coal forges.\nNew this year- advanced forge welding skills option:\nHave you taken this class in previous years\, or done some simple welds but nothing since? David will teach advanced techniques (concurrently with the basics) for those who have done forge welding and would like to progress their skills. Please let us know when registering.\nSafety Equipment: The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. Bring an apron if you have one.\nTools and Equipment: Hammer & tongs (for stock sizes to be listed in an acceptance letter). As part of the cost of the class\, students will be provided with their own wire “scratch” brush and a 1-lb. can of EZ Weld. Stock is provided.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and your contact information to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at (612) 741-9292 or email christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nRegistration for this class will be determined by postmark and confirmed with an acceptance letter. Guild members have priority.

SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools Class 2021
DESCRIPTION:Handled Struck Tools \nInstructors: Jesse and Dave Gavin\, with support by Olson\, Fick\, and others \nClass size: 8 max\, 6 min. \nClass description: Prepare your own working tools with an introduction to the preparation and heat treatment of a popular tool steel.\nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel supplied will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from 1/4 and or 5/16 inch round CRS.\nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel. A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available.\nWe forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.Much of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”. The photo represents the work product. This class has been going annually for quite a while and has always filled. Credit for that goes to Jesse and Dave. (If this is too difficult a time\, Jim Scott is thinking he might offer the similar but different workshop using 5160 steel and tools that are longer (hand held) without handles. That would be toward spring and dependent on the turkey season in Missouri.)\nThe building will be open by 8 am\, introductions and coffee will start at 8:30\, in the shop by 9 AM. We usually finish just before 5 pm.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nPower grinders are supplied. Bring favorite hammer: (16 to 48 ounces). Tongs appropriate to ¼ inch\, 5/8 inch and ¾ inch round stock. (So far we have never run out of tools to share so this is not a big deal.)\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nOther Equipment: Bring a sense of humor. You will make a couple of mistakes.\nSpecial Instructions: Be on time. We cannot ask students to wait for late comers.\nLunch Arrangements: Bag it or go one of the local restaurants. There is a Culvers close and a bar with good lunches.\nHistory: The lead instructor is Jesse Gavin. He is supported by Dave Gavin\, Wayne Olson\, Herb Fick and others. Last year we cancelled the workshop in accord with state guidelines. We shared three different treadle hammers for the eight students. For reference\, probable students are invited to question former students including: Gene Thoma\, Bryan Carlson\, Derrick Phillips\, Wayne Olson\, Jim Moenck\, or Bob Brown.\nTo register for this class: Send a check for $85 made out to The Guild of Metalsmiths (on a piece of paper with your phone number\, email address\, and residential address) to our class manager:\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield MN 55057-2508\n507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell) herb@phyque.com\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:Brass & Copper Decorative Techniques 2022
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Sara Gries\nClass size: Maximum students: 10 Minimum students: 5\nLocation: Guilded Salvage Antiques\, 4430 Lyndale Avenue North\, Minneapolis\, MN 55412\nDescription: Sara Gries will share what she’s learned from years of exploring/experimenting with brass and copper\, specifically for this class the decorative potential of various processes: etching\, creating patina (coloring) by means of chemical or heat reaction (“flame colouring”)\, plating and removal/abrasion. In addition\, she will share tips for design (how to transfer your idea to the metal\, how to make curves and fine areas appear visually smooth and balanced) and will demonstrate the practical application of cutting\, piercing\, and contouring techniques.\nThis is not a project class\, but you’ll have several “samplers” to take home as you\, too\, explore the potential to apply these techniques to your jewelry\, knife-making\, tinwork\, or copper smithing. There is no pre-requisite of skills for this class. Just bring your curiosity and safety glasses. We’d like to limit it this first time to adults\, as chemicals and a micro-torch will be used for a few techniques.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nNone\nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses\nLunch Arrangements: bring your own or take-out from a local establishment\nAcceptance will be based on the postmark date of the tuition check and membership status — Guild members have priority for registration—and will be confirmed by a letter.\nTo register for this class\, send a check for $65 written to The Guild of Metalsmiths\, along with your contact info\, to:\nChristina Dodge    christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303 \nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:Forge Welding 2-Day Class 2022
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: David Mariette and Gordon Barr \nForge welded leaf \nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nClass size: Maximum students: 8\, Minimum: 6\nForge welding: So\, you’ve seen it done. It looks so easy. Possible projects this year: a flux spoon\, tripod\, chain\, leaves & tendrils “bouquet” and if time allows\, a basket twist.\nPrerequisite: Solid basic forging experience. We’ll be using coal forges.\nAdvanced forge welding skills option:\nHave you taken this class in previous years\, or done some simple welds but nothing since? Stock is provided.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and your contact information to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nRegistration for this class will be determined by postmark and confirmed with an acceptance letter. Guild members have priority.
