SUMMARY:Brass & Copper Decorative Techniques 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Sara Gries \nTechniques with patina \nClass Description: Sara Gries will share what she’s learned from years of exploring/ experimenting with brass and copper\, specifically for this class the decorative potential of various processes: etching\, creating patina (coloring) by means of chemical or heat reaction (“flame colouring”)\, plating and removal/abrasion. In addition\, she will share tips for design (how to transfer your idea to the metal\, how to make curves and fine areas appear visually smooth and balanced) and will demonstrate the practical application of cutting\, piercing\, and contouring techniques. This is not a project class\, but you’ll have several “samplers” to take home as you\, too\, explore the potential to apply these techniques to your jewelry\, knife-making\, tin work\, or copper smithing. There is no prerequisite of skills for this class. Just bring your curiosity and safety glasses. Chemicals and a micro-torch will be used for a few techniques\, so we are limiting this to adults.\nRegistration deadline is March 31st. \nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses \nSpecial Instructions: participants will be asked to bring a small sketched image to practice the transfer and etch process. Details will be provided in the acceptance letter. \nLunch Arrangements: bring your own \nClass Manager: Christina Dodge christina.guildmbr@gmail.com \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education \nOr to mail in a check\, contact Christina Dodge to reserve a spot or for additional information. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually.

SUMMARY:Viking Knife Class 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Peter Ellison \nViking Knife \nClass Description: This class’s goal is to introduce a smith to working with wrought iron and in the process make a couple of small projects: a hook and a small forge welded whittle tang knife that would have been common throughout the Viking era and beyond.  In the morning we will be getting used to working with wrought iron by drawing out some bar stock and making a hook.  In the afternoon forge welding high carbon steel to a bar of iron and then drawing out a tang and the blade to make a small forge welded knife.  Time permitting\, burn in a handle and heat treat the knife.\nThe skill level for the class is anyone who can maintain a coal fire\, work with tongs to draw out material\, minimal scrolling\, moderate hammer control\, forge welding experience is not required.  The class is not designed to be the first smithing experience.\nClass size: Maximum students:          8          Minimum students: 3 \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: \n\n½” or ⅝” V bit tongs (able to grab ⅜” to ⅝” round and square stock)\n¼” V bit tongs (able to grab ¼“ round and square stock)\nForging hammer\nLight weight forging hammer\nCourse Wire Brush\n\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: gloves\, safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes. Note that wrought iron is worked very hot and there will be a lot of scale. \nTo register online\, go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact the class manager\, email your address and phone number (do not list personal address) for additional information and to reserve your place.

SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Bob Brown\, Dave & Jesse Gavin\, Herb Fick\, Wayne Olson\, George Auel \nClass size: Maximum students: 4                 Minimum students: 8 \nClass description: \nThis is Herb\, organizing yet another Handled Struck Tools Class for the day before the holiday party. We are electing Bob Brown to be our lead instructor this year. The Gavins\, Dave and Jesse\, are anxious to see how Bob would lead the workshop.\nWe will still use 4140 AN steel; 5/8 and ¾ diameter. We use this alloy because it is well known\, makes a good tool\, and makes a good example for teaching heat treating. The handle will be whatever Bob wants it to be as long as it uses 1018 rod. Special quench oil is supplied courtesy of the Northfield VFW. \nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel.  A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available.\nHerb procures the stock and a literature package reviewing the heat treat principles and a bit of really ancient history. The principle reference used will be the book Steel Metallurgy for the non-metallurgist by John Verhoeven.   (ISBN-13: 978-0-87170-858-8) This year’s demonstrator at the fall conference\, Howard Clark\, made a contribution to that book and is a friend of Verhoeven. The book is available through the internet without charge. \nThis crew has offered the workshop for quite a few years. They have developed many ways to offer guidance on technique. Ask anyone who has taken the workshop. Rarely has anyone left the day with less than two working tools\, punch or chisel. \nA feature of this particular workshop is the use of treadle hammers. We usually have three or four available for the participants to try/use and we encourage participants to also try striking for each other. Or ask a helper to strike\, to get a feel of how this is done in demonstrations at fairs and shows. \nOn Saturday\, December 6 we gather at 8 AM at the MN School of Horseshoeing\, Ramsey Minn. We do introductions\, safety\, and review the literature that gets sent out when people register. Then at 9 AM we are in the shop. Lunch is brown bag\, or area restaurants. We usually are shut down at 5 PM. \n

SUMMARY:Bronze Anvil Casting Class 2026 CANCELLED!
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Arden Hanson\, 507-279-0443  ajhanson9@gmail.com \nCost: First day only: $70; Both days: $120. \nClass Manager: Kim Maas\, tgom.volunteer@gmail.com \n\nClass Description: We’re going to try and condense a 6-day course into 2 days. Day 1 the students will be given a wax anvil as it comes out of the mold.  Some cleaning and finishing are required. Then they will get a model alphabet (1/4-inch-high letters) They will use this model to “cast” the letters and numbers they wish to “weld” on the side of their anvil.  When each student is satisfied with their anvil\, the anvils will be welded to a 1″ diameter wax rod “sprue” and all the anvils will be encased in a 5-inch steel tube that gets filled with investment powder. Think of high-tech Plaster of Paris.      \nThe second day the wax melted out and then the waxy residue is burned out.  While still red hot the molten bronze is poured into the investment mold.  It takes a few minutes to solidify and then the tube and all our hopes and dreams are tossed into a 5-gal bucket.  The investment powder disintegrates leaving a bronze tree with anvils for leaves. The anvils will be cut off the sprue. The anvils will require some finishing!  I’m not sure how much time we’ll have to finish.  Some of you’ll have tools at home.  If not\, Mankato Makerspace has the tools but might require a 3rd day.  \nLunch Arrangements: Bring lunch or visit one of many restaurants in the Mankato area. \nHow to Register: \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\,  https://www.metalsmith.org/education \nOr to mail in a check\, contact the class manager at the email address above for additional information and to reserve your place. \nMinors (under 18) must have a parent present. Minors under 14 need one adult per child. There will be no sharing of forges. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually. \n

SUMMARY:Pipe Tongs Class 2026
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dave Gavin \nClass size: Maximum students: 8                   Minimum students: 4 \nClass Description: This years tongs are what I’m calling pipe tongs. They will hold pipe of nearly any size by one edge vs having one for each size of pipe that you might work with. They will also hold just about any size material. FYI – these work really well for working on bells once the end has been flared out\, as the jaws will reach over and not damage the flaring as you work on the rest of the bell. \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: favorite hammer\, ball peen hammer\, tongs to hold 3/8” – ½” round\, files \nSafety Equipment: (the usual for forging with coal: gloves\, safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.) \nOther Equipment: We will bring belt sander\, torch\, and specialty tooling to make one of the jaws. \nLunch Arrangements: On your own or local establishments \nTo register online\, go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact the class organizer\, email your address and phone number for additional information and to reserve your place. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually.

SUMMARY:Damascus Workshop March 14-15\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Instructors Paul Widenhoefer\, Brendan Stevens\, Justin Klejeski \nAre you interested in learning how to make Damascus- that pattern welded steel with the cool designs that you see on many high-end knives? We will be offering a workshop open to a limited number of people (4-6) that will go over such things as steel selection\, the preparation needed\, the welding process\, building a basic pattern and etching your steel billet. This workshop will be utilizing power hammers to weld and draw out the steel. Because of this\, we ask all students to come with a moderate level of smithing experience. Paul\, Justin\, and Brendan have been teaching knife making classes with the Guild for over a decade. We’re running this independent of the Guild classes\, but it is open to all Guild members and the blade smithing/blacksmithing community. You should come out of the workshop with a Damascus billet big enough for some blades or other small projects and the knowledge to start your next billet\, as well as the option to make a small Japanese style knife. \nCost $125/person\, with possibly an additional charge to be finalized at the end of the workshop. SUMMARY:Hammer Class 2026
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Derrick Phillips and others \nHammer \nClass Description: It is recommended that anyone wishing to take this class has taken at least a few days long beginners’ class and has several weeks of forging time. This will help ensure a certain comfort at the forge and with hot metal\, as this class works with a larger hot piece. This class will teach you the skills you need to make a basic rounding hammer. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of tool steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and add the handle. You will go home with your own hammer. Note: This class can run late just to give a heads up \nClass Manager: Kim Maas\, 651-328-7219 \nBring to class: Bring your favorite hammers: one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. Tongs for holding 1-1/2″ square stock if you have that size. \nSafety Equipment: The usual for forging with coal: gloves\, safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes. \nLunch arrangements: Bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local establishments. We will take an hour break around noon. Also\, bring plenty of water to stay hydrated during the day. \nTo Register: \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\,\nhttps://www.metalsmith.org/education \nOr to mail in a check\, contact class manager shown above to reserve your place in the class and receive additional information on to where to mail the check. \nMinors (under 18) must have a parent present. SUMMARY:Intro to Arc Welding Class 2026
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Marty Masters \nClass Description: If you’ve ever wanted to know more about welding\, but didn’t have a way to do it\, here’s your chance. There’s something mysterious and magical about welding. Welders sit so close to this fountain of sparks that most people would jump back from. They join steel (and other materials) together as if they were one. \nThis one-day class will be a survey of three common modern arc welding techniques which are appropriate for hobby welding: \n\nShielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick)\nGas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)\nFlux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)\n\nEach technique will be explained and demonstrated. Then the student will have hands-on time to practice. \nClass Manager:  Marty Masters   651-285-8731 \nSafety Equipment: Wear clothing made of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes. Proper welding gloves\, welding leathers or coat\, welding helmet (We will have loaner helmets and some gloves if you don’t want to buy.) \nLunch Arrangements: Bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local establishments. We will take an hour break around noon. Also\, bring plenty of water to keep you hydrated during the class. \nTo Register: \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\,\nhttps://www.metalsmith.org/education \nOr to mail in a check\, contact class manager shown above to reserve your place in the class and receive additional information on where to mail the check. \nMinors (under 18) must have a parent present.
