SUMMARY:TGoM August 2023 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:August 9 Guild Meeting/Corn Roast/Hog Roast\n—Prepared and submitted by meeting champion Herb Fick \n  \n\nThe Venue: The Pate Estate. ( I like the alliteration) 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018\nThe Hosts: LuAnn and Dan Pate. This might be the seventeenth time we have been there.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August. (August 9)\nThe Time: Serving at 6:30 pm. Business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM.\n\nVolunteers and curious people start showing up before nine o’clock. Lunch is on your own. Sometimes \nit just doesn’t even happen. Sometimes it is at a bar in Randolph\, Cannon Falls or Dennison. \nThe Demo:\nHerb has not obtained a demonstrator yet. Herb has in the recent past talked to Seth Merritt and Brendan Stevens to demonstrate\, attempting to showcase the young talent we have. (Note that people have rarely walked away from these demonstrations.) Herb is looking for a bit of guidance on this to see if this is a durable concept. We have also had vendors like Hossfeld the last couple of years. Those demonstrations also got a lot of attention. \nMyron has offered a smithing station that will be available for the demonstrators and for teaching experience from noon on. Dan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share). \nThe Menu:\nThe menu is a lot like last years because no one has offered an alternative. \nRoger Degner is our new corn roast maven and will be keeping a watchful eye on the process! Thank you\, Roger! I suspect Dick Carlson helps in some way; he just doesn’t take credit for it.. \nHerb offered the protein (Still pork\, and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb\, who is always a bit over extended with the pig part of the deal. \nVegetables\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up. That is the responsibility of the members for a normal potluck\, except this is not really normal. Remember\, Dick Carlson started this\, and we need to keep it going. \nThe Purpose\nThis is also a good night to bring family and friends. It helps explain why our kind of people gather together. A lot has been going on\, so show-and-tell should be really good and difficult to keep moving along. The corn roast started out as “Family Night.” \nHere is the pitch for the help that it takes in addition to the stellar and consistent efforts put in by the Gavin crew for the meal. People who come early (like 8 AM to noon) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.” \nPeople: Take note of this last paragraph…\nI have used it for several years in a row with amazing results. There seems to always be an adequate assortment of tools for improving the landscape\, and time to remain well acquainted with members. People might want to bring their own. I really need more than a few people to step up. Particularly\, we need people if the weather looks threatening. Dan has invested in a large party tent that takes some effort to assemble. We will not use it if the weather is good\, but it will save the day if it rains. (That has happened once.) We have always managed to leave the Pate estate looking pretty good. \nPlease contact me about your willingness to help. Best to call my cell because I expect to see Northern Minnesota\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Idaho and South Dakota between now and then. (507 649 1611) \nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. Highway 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN. The road is patrolled. \n

SUMMARY:June 2023 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Education and Program Committees extend an invitation to a trial…\nSaturday General Membership All-Day Event\nSaturday\, June 17th\nThis event will coincide with the June NOWTHEN HAMMER-IN on June 16 and 17.\nWe invite you to the Nowthen Historical Power Association show grounds: 7415 Old Viking Blvd\, Nowthen MN (north of Anoka/Ramsey)  (map below)\nThe day’s schedule:\nYou may arrive any time on Saturday morning. There will be smiths working in the shop all day making fun and beautiful forgings and you can watch or possibly assist. There will be a short business meeting conducted by our President\, Larry Wasmund at around 11:00 a.m. This meeting will last 25-20 minutes and will be followed by a potluck meal. \nAt 1:30 there will be a group of our blacksmiths competing in a blind forging contest. No\, they are not blindfolded but they won’t know until they are done if they forged the proper item. They must reach into an enclosed box and without seeing the item\, using only one hand\, determine the shape/item/ textures\, etc. and then forge the item with the piece of stock provided. The closest forging to the original will receive special recognition. There will be forging on at least 5 stations all day long. \nEnjoy the day socializing with members and friends or watch the forging and ask questions. Stay as late as you want or until things wind up for the night. \nTaste of Blacksmithing Sessions\nAs a special offering there will be a portable shop trailer on-site and you may be able to get a TASTE OF BLACKSMITHING with hands-on demonstration. This is available to anyone who attends\, but minor children must be accompanied by their parent. There will be no cost for this “Taste” event that is about 30 minutes long\, and you will take your forging with you. Space will be limited for this event so registration and time must be reserved at the trailer that morning. \nCome on– get your hands dirty! What to bring…\nAnyone is welcome to bring their tools to forge for awhile on one of the five stations existing in the blacksmith building\, or bring your own forge and anvil and set up outside for the day. \nThis will be a family-friendly event. Alcohol in moderation is allowed on the grounds. BYOB and beverages for your family and a dish to pass for the noon potluck. Water and possibly lemonade will be provided at the meal. \nWe look forward to seeing many or all of you there!\nMap to Nowthen MN \n

DESCRIPTION:June meeting venue to be JJ Hill Farm in North Oaks\, MN\nThe June 8 membership meeting will be held at the JJ Hill Farm Historical Society at 35 Hill Farm Circle\, North Oaks\, MN 55127. Meet at 6:30 pm for potluck\, then meeting at 7. This is the remaining part of the JJ Hill farm in North Oaks which at one point was over 3500 acres. The three buildings remaining on site offer us an interesting opportunity to learn some history of this important historic site. Hopefully we will be able to have a brief introduction to the farm’s history from one of our hosts at the JJ Hill Historical Society.\nParking will be limited\, so please carpool if at all possible. We are arranging to have some parking available about 1/3 of a mile away at the North Oaks West Recreation Center Fields at the corner of West Pleasant Lake Road and Red Barn Road. You can drop your food items off at the farm and then park to avoid having to carry your potluck items the 1/3 mile. Again\, carpooling is highly recommended. There will be a port-a-potty on site.\nAny further questions or concerns\, feel free to contact Rick Wessling at rgwessling@gmail.com or call at 612-875-4420. Please email first. If you do call and miss me\, please identify yourself and leave a message. I will attempt to get back to you as soon as possible.\nVisit the website at https://www.hillfarmhistoricalsociety.com/\n— Rick Wessling\, Meeting Champion

SUMMARY:August 2019 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM membership meeting set for Wednesday\, August 14\nVenue: The Dan and LuAnn Pate estate.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August.\nTime: Serving at 6:30 pm\, business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM. Lunch is on your own; sometimes we miss it. \nDemo:\nRight now I have two offers for a demo. Both are pretty extensive\, and if we can swing it\, one will be before dinner and one following.\n1. The hatchet with welded bit\, Derrick\n2. Bolt tongs\, Brendon\nBoth have offered a demo complete with a story board and extensive preparation. Both have a striker arranged.\nMyron has offered a smithing station.\nDan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share).\nThe menu is a lot like last year’s because no one has offered an alternative.\nDick Carlson has offered the corn roast.\nHerb has offered the protein (Still pork and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb who is always a bit over-extended with the pig part of the deal.\nVegetables\, salads\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up.\nHere is the pitch:\nPeople who come early (like 8 AM) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Last year Wendy did mowing and Tom was group arborist. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again some time?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.”\nPlus Myron will offer the use of his forge from sort of noon on.\nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. Hiway 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN.\n— Herb Fick\, Champion of Champions!

SUMMARY:August 2018 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Annual corn feed/hog roast comin’ right up! \nGuild of Metalsmiths membership meeting at Dan Pate’s shop August 8\nWhere: Dan Pate’s shop on Minnesota Hiway 56. Just three miles south of the Stanton airport at 357th street. Dan Pate does auto development and restoration. Again\, last year while we were cleaning up the mess on Thursday morning (I love the concept that we clean up after the party using a front end loader) I asked Dan if he was willing to give it one more time. He is very willing. This will be the ninth time Dan and LuAnn have hosted the August meeting. This makes them even more a super hero team. If this announcement seems redundant; well\, it just might be. Eight times this meeting has been a serious treat\, weather and all. We should test the odds once more. Dan has a backup plan for poor weather. The shop is a bit bigger now. \n35730 Hiway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018 \nNote: It seems unusual\, but right now the roads are open!!\nStarting time: Dinner at 6:30. Set up starting is any time before noon. Jim Moenck\, Gary Myers and Herb will be starting a fire about 9AM. We have Myron Hanson willing to host an open forge from 1 PM on. Come and make something. We have asked Seth Merritt to lead the evening demonstration. We are trying to get people who are available to come early and enjoy the day. Seth\, Cliff\, Tom and Wendy have already offered to move cars\, trim trees and mow\, but more help is always welcome. Call Herb to volunteer! 507-663-0569\, or cell 507 649 1611.\nn We could use one or two people with a guilty conscience to come by on Thursday morning to help with the cleanup. If you don’t have to come too far and/or if you want to see how Dan works\, it would be appreciated.\nFeatures:\nThis meeting features and is known as The Corn Feed. Dick Carlson has put his heart into this for years. Some of us have humbly joined in the effort. Mike Alm set a new\, very high standard preparing ribs for the June meeting. The August crew will try to do a good job.\nHerb\, Jim and Gary plan to roast another hog. We do not promise to cut back on the garlic (unless someone has a good reason). Apprentice hog roasters are always welcome. Once again a few chickens will be prepared for those who avoid pork. Recognize the chickens will be prepared by smoking and secondary roasting in the cavity of the hog. (Some have dietary restrictions.)\nDan has a unique collection of ways to form metal sheets into almost anything you desire. He can demonstrate all of these and offers to take requests. Dan’s equipment mix has changed again this year\, so do not think that you have already seen it all. He has also expanded the space under cover so we are less subject to weather. Dan often allows members to experiment with a machine: your liability. You might learn to handle a machine that will shrink\, stamp\, fold\, staple or mutilate 10 gage steel very carefully. (Often someone demonstrates the effect of an “English Wheel” on a finger.) Safety officers take note! This paragraph is from last year\, and is still the current information.\nThis is family and friends night. We have had some wonderful evenings at Dan and LuAnn’s park-like setting. Show and tell will be good. Do everything you can to be there. This is intended to be a very family friendly and social meeting. To emphasize the family concept I have asked Seth Merritt (a young blacksmith) to demonstrate projects that members can adopt for demonstrations at places like the power shows and fairs. They will be products that you can afford to offer to the onlookers either free or for less than $20.\nWhen planning your contribution to the potluck\, please recognize that we will be a bit long on sweet corn and meat\, so think salads\, breads\, and desserts or whatever you think is special. If you need a hint\, Myron especially likes oatmeal cookies with lots of raisins.\nn Post note: There have been requests for smoked chickens to take home. They are not available on short notice. Our friend the butcher will have a few available at the end of the month\, but not at the meeting. These chickens are local (Kenyon)\, organic and smoked to order. They are not a commodity item.\nSo show up. And be sure to thank the Gavins who graciously show up with the tables\, chairs\, and service items.\nAm I still making it sound like I enjoy this?\n— Herb Fick

SUMMARY:June 2018 membership meeting
DESCRIPTION:On Wednesday\, June 13 Guild members and their families will meet at the home of Mike Alm\, 23260 Lawrence Way\, Hastings\, MN. Mike encourages everyone to plan on spending at least the day but he also welcomes campers\, tailgaters\, anyone with a forge who wants to demonstrate their craft\, cook something up on the “barby”—basically plan on a party! Maybe\, if we’re lucky\, Cliff Larsen will make us some beignets!\nMike’s place will be open all day. Current plans for demonstrations include Pete Stanaitis showing how to create a jeweler’s saw\, and Dick Carlson with Mike Alm demonstrating a simple hammer. Material for hammers will be available\, and you may punch an eye into your simple hammer right there and take it home with you.\nThe usual evening potluck will begin at 6:30 pm\, followed by a business meeting. Be sure to bring your show and tell items too.\nIf you have questions\, contact meeting champion John McDonald at 651-437-5347.

SUMMARY:December 2017 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Annual TGoM holiday gathering Sunday\, December 3 at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul\, MN\nJoin your Guild of Metalsmiths friends and families for our annual holiday gathering at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul (address 385 Michigan St\, just at the corner of West 7th and Western). The hall\, as normal\, will open at 11:00 am for us to start setting up tables. Please come and help\, as more hands make lighter work for all. After the tables are setup\, we usually share hors d’ouvres\, so bring your favorites if you wish. Meeting champion Mike Frattalone promises there will be a few bottles of wine leftover from the Madness also available.\nThe business meeting is next on the agenda\, along with election of new officers and board members. Your participation is key to this. That leads into show and tell and ‘Iron in the Hat\,’ and probably an impromptu auction. By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck.\nStart working on your ‘Iron in the Hat’ items now and note that the theme is miniature metalworking tool ornaments. See rules for this event below.\nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. An elevator entrance is also located on the side just off the parking lot. Bring your family!\nAny questions about this meeting can be answered by contacting meeting champion Mike Frattalone at icemanfratt@aol.com.\n— Mark Lockwood\, Program Committee Chair \n2017 ‘Iron in the Hat’ theme is miniature metalworking tool ornaments!\nThe theme will be miniature metalworking tool ornaments. Forget sugarplums I have visions of a tree decked out in miniature tongs\, hammers\, anvils\, dividers\, shears\, saws\, travelers\, etc. Sort of like Santa’s elves went on strike and hung their tools in protest versus making one more Teddy Ruxpin (or whatever the kids can’t live without this year).\nThe rules are:\n1) You have to make it yourself\, or be a representative of a Guild member who made it but couldn’t make the party. No bringing in something mass produced and purchased.\n2) It has to resemble a metal working tool of some sort.\n3) It has to be able to hang on a Christmas tree without falling off the branch\, pulling the tree down\, etc.\n4) It shouldn’t present any more of a hazard than normal ornaments (e.g. no forges with real burning coal\, no razor sharp edges\, no tombstone welder with real arc\, etc).\nI would also suggest that it take an hour or less to make your item as this is supposed to be a novelty\, a metal sorbet to cleans the craft person’s palate\, as it were.\nReminder on how this works:\nthe short version is if you bring an item for the exchange you will go home with someone else’s work. The names of who gets whose item are randomly drawn. If you find yourself really enjoying making mini-tools and don’t want to stop at one\, you might want to make an extra one for the auction so those folk who either didn’t get lucky in the drawing or weren’t able to make something will have a chance to deck their halls with something better than holly.\n— Martin Pansch\, TGoM President \nAbout the CSPS Hall…\nThe C.S.P.S Hall is the longest serving Czech-Slovak hall in continuous use in the United States. In 1977 The C.S.P.S. Hall was declared a National and State Historic Site. Visit their website at http://www.sokolmn.org/ to learn all about this very interesting place.

SUMMARY:October 2017 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The October 11th Guild meeting will be held at the Jackson Street Roundhouse (193 W Pennsylvania Ave\, St Paul\, MN 55130).\nFor the meeting we will not plan for any demonstrations but invite all our members to bring in pieces of metalwork or other items that they have made or acquired over the years. We have just celebrated our 40th year\, so there is bound to be something not shown in awhile. Please remember items you have shown before have not been seen by everyone and especially newer members\, kind of an extended show and tell. Some folks have major collections others not yet; but if it intrigued you\, it will probably intrigue someone else. Incomplete works are great as well\, as much can be learned by seeing some of the stages along the way. We have been here before\, but maybe we will see and/or share something new.\nThe usual potluck (bring a dish to pass) begins at 6:30 pm\, with the business meeting\, and show and tell to happen after that. The champion for this meeting is Derrick Phillips. Contact him at derrick_phillips@q.com if you have questions.\nIf you’ve never been to this location\, it’s loaded with history and activities for the entire family. Check out the website here:  http://www.transportationmuseum.org The roundhouse itself is one of the last operating railroad roundhouses in the country. And inside the machine shop is the blacksmith shop created and developed by TGoM members\, principally Charlie Bateman\, Nick Heinen\, Gordon Barr\, and others.

SUMMARY:August 2017 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Corn feed\, hog roast\, TGoM potluck\, demonstrations…what more could we ask for at our August 9 family and friends meeting?\nWhere:  Dan Pate’s shop on Minnesota Highway 56. Just three miles south of the Stanton airport at 357th street. Dan Pate does auto development and restoration.  Again\, last year while we were cleaning up the mess on Thursday morning (Using a front end loader!) I asked Dan if he was willing to give it one more time.  He is very willing.  This will be the eighth time Dan and LuAnn have hosted the August meeting.  This makes them even more a super hero team.  If this announcement seems redundant; well\, it just might be.  Seven times this meeting has been a serious treat\, weather and all.  We should test the odds once more.\n35730 Hiway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN  55018\nNote:   Right now the bridge is out one mile south of the Stanton airport.  You have to approach from the South.  That may change by 9 August but this is your warning.\nStarting time: Dinner at 6:30.  Set up starting is any time before noon.  Jim Moenck\, Gary Myers  and Herb Fick will be starting a fire about 9AM.  I’m thinking it would be great if we ended up with a bouquet of calla lilies or roses by the time we do show and tell.  We are trying to get people who are available to come early and enjoy the day.  Tom and Wendy have already offered to trim trees and mow\, and a bit more help would be very welcome.  “This is part of what we  mean by enjoy the day.”\nFeatures for the day:\nMyron Hanson will host an open forge from 1 PM on. Come and make something. Tom Sheely will have some roses to mimic. \n\nJim Moenck is offering the demonstration of the heat treating of a knife blade.  Jim has been working on his bladesmith certification and the effort will be fresh in his  mind.   It seems all new members want to make a knife and this is their chance to  know more about what they are getting into.\nDan Pate is offering to demo any of his “skinny metal” machines during the afternoon.  Those with an interest in metal shaping of materials thinner than 10 gage really should not miss this chance. Dan has a unique collection of ways to form metal sheets into almost anything you desire. He can demonstrate all of these and offers to take requests.  Dan’s equipment mix has changed again this year\, so do not think that you have already seen it all.  Dan often allows members to experiment with a machine.  Your liability\, you might learn to handle a machine that will shrink\, stamp\, fold\, staple or mutilate 10 gage steel very carefully.  (Someone usually demonstrates the effect of an “English Wheel” on a finger.)    Safety officers take note!\nThis meeting features and is known as The Corn Feed.  Dick Carlson has put his heart into this for years.  Some of us have humbly joined in the effort.\nHerb plans to roast a hog.  He does not promise to cut back a little on the garlic (unless someone has a good reason).  He will probably go back to butter for basting. Once again a  few chickens will be prepared for those who avoid pork.  Recognize the chickens will be prepared by smoking and secondary roasting in the cavity of the hog.  (Some have dietary restrictions.)\n\nThis is family and friends night.  We have had some wonderful evenings at Dan and LuAnn’s park like setting.  Show and tell will be good.  Do everything you can to be there. Am I making it sound like I enjoy this? …….  Herb Fick \nDIRECTIONS TO DAN PATE’S FROM THE SOUTH… \nIf you’re coming from the North\, focus on getting to Northfield\, Stanton\, or Cannon Falls. \n\nFrom Northfield take the road to Dennison instead of State Road 19 to Stanton.\nThree miles East of Dennison you find State Road 56.  Just go North about two miles.\nFrom Stanton go West just over a mile. Goodhue Avenue goes South.  It sort of parallels 56 to 350 Street.  Go east a half mile and then go South again until 357th street. East on 357th until you get to Pates driveway.\nFrom Cannon Falls go west (from 56) about a half mile  to the Oxford mill road. Then south sort of following the main road until it turns into County 24. County road 24 intersects Hiway 56\, then and go North on 56 two miles to Dan’s.\nWhat makes this important is that cell phone reception near Pate’s dies out for most people.\nIf lost try to call Herb (507 649 1611).  We will get a few signs at the intersections.\nCome early. Demos start around 1. Potluck meal is at 6:30.\n\nDetailed map to Dan’s by avoiding the bridge that’s out…

SUMMARY:June Membership Meeting 2017
DESCRIPTION:The next TGoM membership meeting is set for Wednesday\, June 14. This meeting will be held at ‘The Landing’ which used to be known as ‘Murphy’s Landing’ and is at 2187 Highway 101 E Shakopee\, MN 55379 which is just west of Valley Fair. Enter at the West Entrance which is not the Main (East) Entrance but is the entrance which is reserved for scheduled groups\, site rentals\, select programs\, and meetings such as this. There is a parking lot there\, and the meeting will be in the Town Hall building. \nThe usual pot luck begins at 6:30 pm\, with the business meeting\, and show and tell to happen after that. For the demonstration\, we will have several members of the Program Committee create items that do not take much time to create. Cliff Larsen is going to demo creating a Hat from a Quarter. Lou Groth will demo creating a Spoon. Myron Hanson will demo a Calla Lily and/or a Ginko Leaf and Pete Stanaitis will demo a Fire Striker. These will be dependent on the weather as we do not have a shelter for these demonstrations. Pete is also going to bring his Induction Forge to demonstrate and this can be setup inside the Town Hall building if the weather does not cooperate. Hope you can make it! \nThe meeting champion is Jeff Suek. Call him with any questions at 952-237-7851. Thank you.
