SUMMARY:Guild of Metalsmiths Meeting February 2026
DESCRIPTION:February 2026 Membership Meeting to be held at Northrup King Building Art Space\, Minneapolis\, MN\, Feb. 7\, 2026\nFebruary’s Membership Meeting will be on SATURDAY\, February 7\, 2026 from noon to 4:00 pm. Location: Northrup King & Co. located at 1500 Jackson St NE\, Minneapolis\, MN. The meeting will be in the 3rd floor gallery\, followed by a potluck and show-n-tell. There is parking in front of the building. Click on map below to enlarge graphic. \nNorthrup King Building is the Art Organization. It includes artists from about 11 different buildings in Northeast Minneapolis. The building is open from noon to 4 on Saturdays. There are lots of studios that are open during that time frame.  Some are just galleries\, and some also include working studio. \nMary Schwartz will give a demonstration on lamp working. She uses a torch to create glass beads. \nHistory of Northrup King Building\nThe Northrup King Building is actually a complex of 10 buildings first constructed in 1917. Originally built for and occupied by the Northrup King & Co. seed company\, its location adjoining two sets of railroad tracks made it the ideal place to ship seeds across the United States. Northrup King & Co. occupied the building until the late 1980s\, when it was sold to Jim Stanton of Shamrock Properties. Through an ongoing process of renovation\, Stanton and his daughter Debbie Woodward (Property Manager from 2001 – 2018) turned the Northrup King Building into the creative center of over 350 artists and arts-related businesses that you know today. The building was sold to Artspace Projects\, Inc. upon Woodward’s retirement. \nIf you have questions about this meeting\, please contact Kim Maas\, Volunteer Coordinator\, at tgom.volunteer@gmail.com

He spoke to us years ago at the Historic Fort Snelling Auditorium with a combined meeting with the MN Clockmakers Guild. \nProf. Tadmor uses theoretical models and computer simulations to understand material behavior and failure from the fundamental interactions of their atoms. This requires a multiscale approach that can link processes occurring on atomic scales to the scales of human perception. \nI looked at his fall class load\, and he is teaching a graduate level course on Continuum Mechanics\, which is the fundamental subject that serves as the foundation for solid and fluid mechanics. It provides the most general description of the deformation and response of materials to external loading. He says that this is his favorite class to teach because it shows students how most everything they learned in their undergraduate engineering curriculum is unified and generalized in this course. \nNote: If you’re over 62\, you can take the course for the price of books and parking. It’s course # is AEM5501. Don’t know about you\, but I don’t think I would be his best student \nWe will enjoy our customary potluck at 6:30 pm\, so be sure to bring a dish to pass and some of your favorite show-n-tell items. \n— Richard Zielike \n

SUMMARY:February 17 Membership Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Guild meeting Saturday\, February 17 at 9:00 a.m. is ‘BYOC’ (Bring Your Own Coffee)\nNorthfield Foundry & Mach Company \n320 Water St N\, \nNorthfield\, MN 55057 \nWe will be hosted by Northfield Foundry. Herb Fick visited it prior to our meeting\, and this is most of his report: \n“The Foundry dates to 1920 when Mike Machacek moved to Northfield after an argument with the priest in New Prague MN. He developed a line of industrial woodworking machinery that was accepted worldwide. They closed the hot part of the operation in or about 1946. \n“Jeff Machacek has offered a tour of the facilities on a Saturday when the shop is quiet. The equipment ranges from large lathes\, boring machines\, planers that handle very large castings\, balancing equipment for large wheels\, rollers and arbor motors which are purposely built at the foundry. Their catalog sales are based on table saws\, bandsaws\, drop saws\, and jointers for the furniture industry. Their specials support local manufacturing industry. \n“The rules: If we want chairs\, we need to bring them. Expect to stand throughout the tour. Expect questions to be welcome. Do not wear your best clothes. This is an old shop\, and the floors are not clean. \n“The foundry has a website that will be interesting to some\, but it is limited. Right now\, their shop is booked out for about a year\, so don’t plan on buying something to take with you. A personal note: Once you are familiar with the name\, you will realize you will see their name anywhere you travel in the Western world.” \nIf you’re interested in going out to eat after the meeting\, here is Herb’s culinary review of local eating establishments: \nWe have a pretty good selection of local eating establishments in town\, my view. \n\nHigh end would be the Northfield Golf Club. They do a sandwich type of lunch. They have a liquor license.\nWe have a Culver’s that is a little better than most Culver’s. They have a back room where we sometimes gather groups.\nThe bowling alley on the south side of town has become popular with me.\nThe Ole Store is up by St. Olaf College and does more interesting food. Usually very good.\nThe Quarter Back is right on the highway and is popular. The owner is really good to the high school crowd that works there.\nLots of people like Hogans\, on Main Street. I don’t.\nThe Reunion on Main Street is a bit upscale and usually good.\nI like Fielder’s Choice on the south side of town.\nAnd there is Perkin’s.\nThere are some new places I have never tried\, but there is no lack of opportunity.\n\n— Herb \nThat’s it. Remember:  Saturday 9 am\, Feb. 17\, and eat first! If you have questions\, contact me\, (the meeting champion) Richard Zielike\, at richard@edinaclock.com or 612-860-6120.

SUMMARY:TGoM August 2023 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:August 9 Guild Meeting/Corn Roast/Hog Roast\n—Prepared and submitted by meeting champion Herb Fick \n  \n\nThe Venue: The Pate Estate. ( I like the alliteration) 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018\nThe Hosts: LuAnn and Dan Pate. This might be the seventeenth time we have been there.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August. (August 9)\nThe Time: Serving at 6:30 pm. Business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM.\n\nVolunteers and curious people start showing up before nine o’clock. Lunch is on your own. Sometimes \nit just doesn’t even happen. Sometimes it is at a bar in Randolph\, Cannon Falls or Dennison. \nThe Demo:\nHerb has not obtained a demonstrator yet. Herb has in the recent past talked to Seth Merritt and Brendan Stevens to demonstrate\, attempting to showcase the young talent we have. (Note that people have rarely walked away from these demonstrations.) Herb is looking for a bit of guidance on this to see if this is a durable concept. We have also had vendors like Hossfeld the last couple of years. Those demonstrations also got a lot of attention. \nMyron has offered a smithing station that will be available for the demonstrators and for teaching experience from noon on. Dan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share). \nThe Menu:\nThe menu is a lot like last years because no one has offered an alternative. \nRoger Degner is our new corn roast maven and will be keeping a watchful eye on the process! Thank you\, Roger! I suspect Dick Carlson helps in some way; he just doesn’t take credit for it.. \nHerb offered the protein (Still pork\, and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb\, who is always a bit over extended with the pig part of the deal. \nVegetables\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up. That is the responsibility of the members for a normal potluck\, except this is not really normal. Remember\, Dick Carlson started this\, and we need to keep it going. \nThe Purpose\nThis is also a good night to bring family and friends. It helps explain why our kind of people gather together. A lot has been going on\, so show-and-tell should be really good and difficult to keep moving along. The corn roast started out as “Family Night.” \nHere is the pitch for the help that it takes in addition to the stellar and consistent efforts put in by the Gavin crew for the meal. People who come early (like 8 AM to noon) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.” \nPeople: Take note of this last paragraph…\nI have used it for several years in a row with amazing results. There seems to always be an adequate assortment of tools for improving the landscape\, and time to remain well acquainted with members. People might want to bring their own. I really need more than a few people to step up. Particularly\, we need people if the weather looks threatening. Dan has invested in a large party tent that takes some effort to assemble. We will not use it if the weather is good\, but it will save the day if it rains. (That has happened once.) We have always managed to leave the Pate estate looking pretty good. \nPlease contact me about your willingness to help. Best to call my cell because I expect to see Northern Minnesota\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Idaho and South Dakota between now and then. (507 649 1611) \nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. Highway 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN. The road is patrolled. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Education and Program Committees extend an invitation to a trial…\nSaturday General Membership All-Day Event\nSaturday\, June 17th\nThis event will coincide with the June NOWTHEN HAMMER-IN on June 16 and 17.\nWe invite you to the Nowthen Historical Power Association show grounds: 7415 Old Viking Blvd\, Nowthen MN (north of Anoka/Ramsey)  (map below)\nThe day’s schedule:\nYou may arrive any time on Saturday morning. There will be smiths working in the shop all day making fun and beautiful forgings and you can watch or possibly assist. There will be a short business meeting conducted by our President\, Larry Wasmund at around 11:00 a.m. This meeting will last 25-20 minutes and will be followed by a potluck meal. \nAt 1:30 there will be a group of our blacksmiths competing in a blind forging contest. No\, they are not blindfolded but they won’t know until they are done if they forged the proper item. They must reach into an enclosed box and without seeing the item\, using only one hand\, determine the shape/item/ textures\, etc. and then forge the item with the piece of stock provided. The closest forging to the original will receive special recognition. There will be forging on at least 5 stations all day long. \nEnjoy the day socializing with members and friends or watch the forging and ask questions. Stay as late as you want or until things wind up for the night. \nTaste of Blacksmithing Sessions\nAs a special offering there will be a portable shop trailer on-site and you may be able to get a TASTE OF BLACKSMITHING with hands-on demonstration. This is available to anyone who attends\, but minor children must be accompanied by their parent. There will be no cost for this “Taste” event that is about 30 minutes long\, and you will take your forging with you. Space will be limited for this event so registration and time must be reserved at the trailer that morning. \nCome on– get your hands dirty! What to bring…\nAnyone is welcome to bring their tools to forge for awhile on one of the five stations existing in the blacksmith building\, or bring your own forge and anvil and set up outside for the day. \nThis will be a family-friendly event. Alcohol in moderation is allowed on the grounds. BYOB and beverages for your family and a dish to pass for the noon potluck. Water and possibly lemonade will be provided at the meal. \nWe look forward to seeing many or all of you there!\nMap to Nowthen MN \n

SUMMARY:October 12\, 2022 TGoM Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM Membership meeting Wednesday\, October 12 at Linders Specialties Co.\nGreetings\, everyone.\nThe Guild of Metalsmiths’ October membership meeting will be at Linders Specialties\, 432 Atwater Street\, St. Paul\, MN 55117. (map below). According to their website\, “Linders Specialty Company has been rolling steel for three generations since 1964 when Cornelis Linders founded the company.”\nThey are having us back. They have acquired some new equipment since we were there last\, and hopefully we will be able to see some of what they can do while we are there. It was not certain what they might be able to do during our meeting\, but it is always interesting and impressive to see some of the large works that they do.\nPlease bring any pieces for show and tell\, including any pieces you may have shown before. As with all of our meetings\, the shop staff are staying late so we need be considerate of their time and shop.\nPotluck dinner at 6:30 pm\, and 7:00 pm meeting will be as usual. \n— Derrick Phillips\, Program Committee Co-Chair

SUMMARY:August 10 TGoM Membership Meeting 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Venue: The Pate Estate. ( I like the alliteration) 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018\nThe Hosts: LuAnn and Dan Pate. This might be the seventeenth time we have been there.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August. (August 10)\nThe Time: Serving at 6:30 pm. Business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM.\nVolunteers and curious people start showing up before nine o’clock. Lunch is on your own\, sometimes it just doesn’t even happen. Sometimes it is at a bar in Randolph\, Cannon Falls or Dennison. Last year the Merritts seemed to take care of it.\nThe Demo:\nHerb has not obtained a demonstrator yet. Herb has in recent past talked Seth Merritt and Brendan Stevens to demonstrate\, attempting to showcase the young talent we have. (Note that people have rarely walked away from these demonstrations.) Herb is looking for a bit of guidance on this to see if this is a durable concept. We have also had vendors like Ken’s Iron and Hossfeld the last couple of years. Those demonstrations also got a lot of attention.\nMyron has offered a smithing station that will be available for the demonstrators and for teaching experience from noon on.)\nDan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share).\nThe menu is a lot like last years because no one has offered an alternative.\nLarry Sorensen has offered the corn roast. I suspect Dick Carlson helps in some way\, he just doesn’t take credit for it..\nHerb offered the protein (Still pork\, and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb\, who is always a bit over extended with the pig part of the deal.\nVegetables\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up. That is the responsibility of the members for a normal potluck\, except this is not really normal. Remember\, Dick Carlson started this\, and we need to keep it going.\nThis is also a good night to bring family and friends. It helps explain why our kind of people gather together. A lot has been going on\, so show-and-tell should be really good and difficult to keep moving along. The corn roast started out as “Family Night.”\nHere is the pitch for the help that it takes in addition to the stellar and consistent efforts put in by the Gavin crew for the meal.\nPeople who come early (like 8 AM to noon) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.”\nPeople take note of this last paragraph... I have used it for several years in a row with amazing results. Please contact me about your willingness to help. Best to call my cell because I expect to see Northern Minnesota\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Idaho and South Dakota between now and then. (507 649 1611)\nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. HiWay 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN.The road is patrolled. I did a practice pig last Saturday!

SUMMARY:June 8 Membership Meeting 2022
DESCRIPTION:June meeting venue to be JJ Hill Farm in North Oaks\, MN\nThe June 8 membership meeting will be held at the JJ Hill Farm Historical Society at 35 Hill Farm Circle\, North Oaks\, MN 55127. Meet at 6:30 pm for potluck\, then meeting at 7. This is the remaining part of the JJ Hill farm in North Oaks which at one point was over 3500 acres. The three buildings remaining on site offer us an interesting opportunity to learn some history of this important historic site. Hopefully we will be able to have a brief introduction to the farm’s history from one of our hosts at the JJ Hill Historical Society.\nParking will be limited\, so please carpool if at all possible. We are arranging to have some parking available about 1/3 of a mile away at the North Oaks West Recreation Center Fields at the corner of West Pleasant Lake Road and Red Barn Road. You can drop your food items off at the farm and then park to avoid having to carry your potluck items the 1/3 mile. Again\, carpooling is highly recommended. There will be a port-a-potty on site.\nAny further questions or concerns\, feel free to contact Rick Wessling at rgwessling@gmail.com or call at 612-875-4420. Please email first. If you do call and miss me\, please identify yourself and leave a message. I will attempt to get back to you as soon as possible.\nVisit the website at https://www.hillfarmhistoricalsociety.com/\n— Rick Wessling\, Meeting Champion

SUMMARY:TGoM Membership Meeting Feb 9 2022 cancelled!
DESCRIPTION:We (the program committee) have attempted to set up a meeting at several locations but were told not at this time\, so we have decided to cancel the February meeting.  Most of the locations expressed concerns over the covid spike right now and issues related to it. We expect the April meeting will happen and are working on it now. Our regrets and best wishes. \nDerrick Phillips\, Program Committee Chair \n

SUMMARY:TGoM December Membership Meeting 2021
DESCRIPTION:TGoM’s 2021 holiday gathering is set for Sunday\, December 5 at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul\, MN\nJoin Guild of Metalsmiths families for our annual holiday gathering at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul (address 385 Michigan St\, at the corner of West 7th and Western). The hall will open at noon. We usually share hors d’ouvres as people arrive\, so bring your favorites if you wish. \nThe annual business meeting is first on the agenda\, including awards\, elections\, and the normal business stuff starting at 1:00 pm and going on for an hour or so. Your participation is key to this. That leads into show and tell\, and possibly an impromptu mini-auction. By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck. Please bring a dish to pass. \nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. An elevator entrance is also located on the side just off the parking lot. Bring your family! \nAny questions about this meeting can be answered by contacting meeting champion Mike Frattalone at icemanfratt@aol.com.
