SUMMARY:February 17 Membership Meeting 2024
DESCRIPTION:Guild meeting Saturday\, February 17 at 9:00 a.m. is ‘BYOC’ (Bring Your Own Coffee)\nNorthfield Foundry & Mach Company \n320 Water St N\, \nNorthfield\, MN 55057 \nWe will be hosted by Northfield Foundry. Herb Fick visited it prior to our meeting\, and this is most of his report: \n“The Foundry dates to 1920 when Mike Machacek moved to Northfield after an argument with the priest in New Prague MN. He developed a line of industrial woodworking machinery that was accepted worldwide. They closed the hot part of the operation in or about 1946. \n“Jeff Machacek has offered a tour of the facilities on a Saturday when the shop is quiet. The equipment ranges from large lathes\, boring machines\, planers that handle very large castings\, balancing equipment for large wheels\, rollers and arbor motors which are purposely built at the foundry. Their catalog sales are based on table saws\, bandsaws\, drop saws\, and jointers for the furniture industry. Their specials support local manufacturing industry. \n“The rules: If we want chairs\, we need to bring them. Expect to stand throughout the tour. Expect questions to be welcome. Do not wear your best clothes. This is an old shop\, and the floors are not clean. \n“The foundry has a website that will be interesting to some\, but it is limited. Right now\, their shop is booked out for about a year\, so don’t plan on buying something to take with you. A personal note: Once you are familiar with the name\, you will realize you will see their name anywhere you travel in the Western world.” \nIf you’re interested in going out to eat after the meeting\, here is Herb’s culinary review of local eating establishments: \nWe have a pretty good selection of local eating establishments in town\, my view. \n\nHigh end would be the Northfield Golf Club. They do a sandwich type of lunch. They have a liquor license.\nWe have a Culver’s that is a little better than most Culver’s. They have a back room where we sometimes gather groups.\nThe bowling alley on the south side of town has become popular with me.\nThe Ole Store is up by St. Olaf College and does more interesting food. Usually very good.\nThe Quarter Back is right on the highway and is popular. The owner is really good to the high school crowd that works there.\nLots of people like Hogans\, on Main Street. I don’t.\nThe Reunion on Main Street is a bit upscale and usually good.\nI like Fielder’s Choice on the south side of town.\nAnd there is Perkin’s.\nThere are some new places I have never tried\, but there is no lack of opportunity.\n\n— Herb \nThat’s it. Remember:  Saturday 9 am\, Feb. 17\, and eat first! If you have questions\, contact me\, (the meeting champion) Richard Zielike\, at richard@edinaclock.com or 612-860-6120.

SUMMARY:Wire Inlay Class 2024
DESCRIPTION:Instructor:        Martin Pansch\, 612-599-4762     blacksmithingyeti@gmail.com\nCost:                  $55.00\,  $65.00 for non-Guild members\nClass size:         Maximum 8\, minimum 4 students\nClass Description:\nThe class will focus on wire inlay into mild steel. This is a technique that can be used to add decorative elements to many of your projects.  Students will chase grooves in the metal and then chase the bottoms of the grooves square. The two corners thus created will be chased to form an undercut channel. The upper edges of the channels will be chased and filed to create grooves of even width. Copper wire will be planished into the grooves so that the softer metal forms to fit the undercut and it locked in place. Surfaces will then be filed smooth leaving a pattern to  This class will concentrate on the basics of the straight lines\, curved lines\, and dots. We’ll cover both wire that is filed flush with the surface of the steel and left as a raised bead. \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class. \nStudents will need a light\, soft face hammer for striking tools. This hammer should be light enough that thousands of blows will not be tiring. A cheap Chinese ball peen will likely need no softening. Additional tools include: A mill file\, a hack saw\, sand paper\, sharpening stones (a diamond lap plate works well)\, paper\, pencil\, Sharpie ™. Students may consider bringing a supplemental light source or other visual enhancement aids as needed. Bring a stool if you prefer to work sitting. \nA basic set of small chisels will be provided for students for use in the class. Those over-achievers who want to make their own prior to class can request detailed descriptions of the needed tools. \nSafety Equipment – safety glasses & ear plugs are mandatory. \nLunch arrangements: Either bring a bag lunch with you or money to dine at some of the establishments in the area. \nClass manager is Gordon Barr. For questions\, contact Gordon at agbarr@aol.com   952-894-4821 \nTo register online:  click here to our website Education page \nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark\, and each person will be notified individually \n

We will concentrate this portion on forging tooling to perform ½” slot punching and drifting with ½” round and square drifts. The class is open to all students that have taken the beginners class.  Understand that if the student has not had a year or so of reasonably consistent practice\, this class will be extra challenging. \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nPersonal Protective Equipment (PPE)\, hammers (rounding & flat face/peen)\, tongs to firmly hold (inline and perpendicular) ½” round\, and square\, and ¾” round\, files (hot rasp & 12″ bastard)\, center punch\, hot cut chisel\, measuring device (non-flammable)\, worn or broken grinding wheel or a sharpening stone (for polishing for heat treating). \nSafety Equipment:  The usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, respirator or dust mask for grinding\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes. \nLunch Arrangements: Bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local establishments. We will take an hour break around noon. \nTo register for this class:  send a check written to -The Guild of Metalsmiths for $160 to:\nDerrick Phillips\n2461 Como Ave\nSt. Paul MN 55108 \nTo register online:  click here to our website Education page \nContact Derrick with questions.  derrickphillipsa3o3@gmail.com. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually.

SUMMARY:Hammer Class 2024
DESCRIPTION:Hammer with anvil \nInstructor: Derrick Phillips and others\nClass size: Max 8\, min 4\nDescription: It is recommended that anyone wishing to take this class have taken at least a few days long beginners class\, and have several weeks of forging time. This will help ensure a certain comfort at the forge and with hot metal\, as this class works with a larger hot piece. This class will teach you the skills you need to make a basic rounding hammer. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of tool steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and add the handle. You will go home with your own hammer. There will be an assortment of weights to choose from so you can make a hammer to fit your size and needs. This is an intermediate skill level class. \nTools and other items to bring: Bring your favorite hammers: one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. A tongs for holding 1-1/2″ square stock if you have that size.\nSafety equipment to bring: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, respirator or dust mask for grinding\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nTools and other items to bring: Bring your favorite hammers: one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. SUMMARY:Volunteer Op: Spring Festival\, Holtz Farm\, Eagan MN
DESCRIPTION:$3/person Admission |11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.\n4665 Manor Dr\, Eagan\, MN 55123 \nEnjoy a spring afternoon of old-fashioned fun at Historic Holz Farm. The Friends of the Farm and the City of Eagan invite you to learn about life on the farm. Guests will be able to enjoy a hayride\, tour the house and listen to live music! Snacks and souvenirs will be available for purchased from the General Store. Tickets required for all individuals 12 months and older\, tickets available at onsite or ahead of time at discovereagan.com. \nContact Zach Christiansen for details: ziggmo@gmail.com\, 763-568-2614 \nNote from Zach Christiansen\, the champion:\nThe event is pretty relaxed. Show up a bit early\, clear out the shed so there is room to work (stumps\, fire pits\, some cobbler items) then I setup my forge and anvil so I’m ready for the day. After that it’s just making things\, talking to visitors/answering questions\, and I give away the items I make. Mostly I make hooks or duplex nail swords\, but any small quick to make item has been good for me. I’m sure someone could do larger items\, knives\, etc too. I also have a table setup to show other items I have made in classes. It gives another talking point. And of course keeping an eye out for those folks who are extra curious and making sure they get a brochure.

This year there will be a regular business meeting scheduled at the same time! Details forthcoming and what a way to jam pack a full day with friends and family!\nThe blind forging competition will return on Saturday afternoon. The goal will be a friendly forge off. \nThe rules: \n\nAn object is placed inside a box and you must create (forge) the unknown object by what you can feel. No peeking!\nWe usually do a time limit with this as well.\nPrizes to be announced!\n\nWe will focus our efforts on the Fall Conference contest: Check page 2 in this Forum for what that is. If you want to work on skills or another project\, that’s ok! \nCome and hang out with a bunch of your friends\, make new friends\, and share/learn some new skills. Beginners/Newbies are highly welcome to come and try your hand at smithing. \nCamping on-site is available Friday and Saturday night on primitive sites. Port-a-potties on site. Five forges are open for use. Coal will be provided. I will also bring another forge and anvil for use. If you want to bring your own equipment—please do! Bring any examples you have to share with others. Bring your own tools if you have them. Some limited steel stock is available\, but if you need specific sizes\, feel free to bring your own steel. Scrap pieces ok. This event will hopefully give you some inspiration to help you to come up with your own design for the Fall Conference theme contest and help you learn how to make it. If you don’t know how to make something\, ask ahead of time\, and we will try very hard to accommodate. \nIf you have some skills in the creation of items and/or tools and would like to demo or have any questions about the event\, please contact me: Wayne Olson\, 320 280-0100. There is no charge to participate in this event. \nThe Nowthen Power Show grounds are located at 7415 Old Viking Blvd\, Nowthen\, MN.\nI plan to arrive around 3:30 pm on Friday for anyone that wants to help set up\, and I will need some help to clean up very late on Saturday night. Your help is very much welcome. \nIf you want to go all night on Saturday night\, I will stay thru Sunday to help you out. Sounds like a challenge! See ya there!
