SUMMARY:Volunteer Op: Fall Festival\, Holz Farm\, Eagan MN
DESCRIPTION:Harvest Festival– Saturday\, September 21\, 2024 | $3/person  |  11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nThe Friends of the Farm and Eagan Parks & Recreation invite you to join them for a day of fall fun. Visit Historic Holz Farm and enjoy hayrides\, live music\, animals and live demonstrations. A special fiddling  contest will take place at 1:00 p.m. Did you know that Historic Holz Farm is on the National Registry of Historic Places? This 1940’s era farm brings you back to yesteryear and what farming was like back in Eagan’s early days. Tickets are required for all individuals 12 months and older and are available at discovereagan.com or onsite.  \nNote from Zach Christiansen\, the champion:\nThe event is pretty relaxed. Show up a bit early\, clear out the shed so there is room to work (stumps\, fire pits\, some cobbler items) then I setup my forge and anvil so I’m ready for the day. After that it’s just making things\, talking to visitors/answering questions\, and I give away the items I make. Mostly I make hooks or duplex nail swords\, but any small quick to make item has been good for me. I’m sure someone could do larger items\, knives\, etc too. I also have a table setup to show other items I have made in classes. It gives another talking point. And of course keeping an eye out for those folks who are extra curious and making sure they get a brochure.

SUMMARY:TGoM Membership Meeting October 2024
DESCRIPTION:October 9 Membership Meeting Explores AI Advances in Materials Discovery\nEllad Tadmor is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at U of M\, and he will lead our program on Wednesday\, October 9\, at Christ the King Lutheran church (8600 Freemont Ave S in Bloomington. Map unavailable. Check Google). He will talk about how recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing materials discovery. He spoke to us years ago at the Historic Fort Snelling Auditorium with a combined meeting with the MN Clockmakers Guild. \nProf. Tadmor uses theoretical models and computer simulations to understand material behavior and failure from the fundamental interactions of their atoms. This requires a multiscale approach that can link processes occurring on atomic scales to the scales of human perception. \nI looked at his fall class load\, and he is teaching a graduate level course on Continuum Mechanics\, which is the fundamental subject that serves as the foundation for solid and fluid mechanics. It provides the most general description of the deformation and response of materials to external loading. He says that this is his favorite class to teach because it shows students how most everything they learned in their undergraduate engineering curriculum is unified and generalized in this course. \nNote: If you’re over 62\, you can take the course for the price of books and parking. It’s course # is AEM5501. Don’t know about you\, but I don’t think I would be his best student \nWe will enjoy our customary potluck at 6:30 pm\, so be sure to bring a dish to pass and some of your favorite show-n-tell items. \n— Richard Zielike \n

SUMMARY:Brass & Copper Decorative Techniques 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Sara Gries \nTechniques with patina \nClass Description: Sara Gries will share what she’s learned from years of exploring/ experimenting with brass and copper\, specifically for this class the decorative potential of various processes: etching\, creating patina (coloring) by means of chemical or heat reaction (“flame colouring”)\, plating and removal/abrasion. In addition\, she will share tips for design (how to transfer your idea to the metal\, how to make curves and fine areas appear visually smooth and balanced) and will demonstrate the practical application of cutting\, piercing\, and contouring techniques. This is not a project class\, but you’ll have several “samplers” to take home as you\, too\, explore the potential to apply these techniques to your jewelry\, knife-making\, tin work\, or copper smithing. There is no prerequisite of skills for this class. Just bring your curiosity and safety glasses. Chemicals and a micro-torch will be used for a few techniques\, so we are limiting this to adults.\nRegistration deadline is March 31st. \nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses \nSpecial Instructions: participants will be asked to bring a small sketched image to practice the transfer and etch process. Details will be provided in the acceptance letter. \nLunch Arrangements: bring your own \nClass Manager: Christina Dodge christina.guildmbr@gmail.com \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education \nOr to mail in a check\, contact Christina Dodge to reserve a spot or for additional information. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually.

SUMMARY:Hammer Making Class 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Derrick Phillips & others\nClass size: Max 8\, min. 4\nClass Description: It is recommended that anyone wishing to take this class have taken at least a few days long beginners class\, and have several weeks of forging time. This will help ensure a certain comfort at the forge and with hot metal\, as this class works with a larger hot piece. This class will teach you the skills you need to make a basic rounding hammer. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of tool steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and add the handle. You will go home with your own hammer. There will be an assortment of weights to choose from so you can make a hammer to fit your size and needs. This is an intermediate skill level class\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: Bring your favorite hammers; one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. A tongs for holding 1-1/2″ square stock if you have that size\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, respirator or dust mask for grinding\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nSpecial Instructions: This class can run late just to give a heads up\nLunch Arrangements: Bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local establishments. We will take an hour break around noon. \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact Derrick Phillips at derrickphillipsa3o3@gmail.com to reserve a spot. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually. \n \n  \n
