DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Ben Groves\nClass Size: Max 4\, Min 2\nClass Description:\nIf you’ve ever wanted to know more about welding but didn’t have a way to do it\, here’s your chance. There’s something mysterious and magical about welding. Welders sit so close to this fountain of sparks that most people would jump back from. They join steel (and other materials) together as if they were one.\nThis one-day class will be a survey of three common modern arc welding techniques which are appropriate for hobby welding: \n\nShielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick)\nGas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW/MIG)\nFlux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW)\n\nEach technique will be explained and demonstrated. Then the student will have hands-on time to practice.\nClass Champion: Martin Masters\nSafety Equipment – Wear clothing made of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nOther Equipment: Proper welding gloves\, welding leathers or coat\, welding helmet (We will have loaner helmets if you don’t want to buy one.)\nLunch Arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or eat at a local restaurant. \nTo register online:  click here to our website Education page\nTo register for this class with a check: Contact Marty Masters at mastersmw@yahoo.com to send a check for $150 written to The Guild of Metalsmiths.\nContact Marty with questions. mastersmw@yahoo.com or 651-285-8731\nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually. \n

SUMMARY:TGoM Membership Meeting October 2024
DESCRIPTION:October 9 Membership Meeting Explores AI Advances in Materials Discovery\nEllad Tadmor is a Professor of Aerospace Engineering and Mechanics at U of M\, and he will lead our program on Wednesday\, October 9\, at Christ the King Lutheran church (8600 Freemont Ave S in Bloomington. Map unavailable. Check Google). He will talk about how recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) are revolutionizing materials discovery. He spoke to us years ago at the Historic Fort Snelling Auditorium with a combined meeting with the MN Clockmakers Guild. \nProf. Tadmor uses theoretical models and computer simulations to understand material behavior and failure from the fundamental interactions of their atoms. This requires a multiscale approach that can link processes occurring on atomic scales to the scales of human perception. \nI looked at his fall class load\, and he is teaching a graduate level course on Continuum Mechanics\, which is the fundamental subject that serves as the foundation for solid and fluid mechanics. It provides the most general description of the deformation and response of materials to external loading. He says that this is his favorite class to teach because it shows students how most everything they learned in their undergraduate engineering curriculum is unified and generalized in this course. \nNote: If you’re over 62\, you can take the course for the price of books and parking. It’s course # is AEM5501. Don’t know about you\, but I don’t think I would be his best student \nWe will enjoy our customary potluck at 6:30 pm\, so be sure to bring a dish to pass and some of your favorite show-n-tell items. \n— Richard Zielike \n

DESCRIPTION:Instructor:              William Breczinski  brecwill@gmail.com  \nDescription:       This is a class on how to add decorations to your metal project. Engraving is a time-honored art form that can be as simple as a few scratches to as intricate as a fowling piece fit for royalty.  Personally\, I’ve wanted to add this skill to my collection for a long time\, which is why I’ve organized this class. William Breczinski was the recipient of an educational grant from the Guild\, and this is his first opportunity to share the knowledge that he gained. The class requires no previous experience.  \nClass Manager: Martin Masters  mastersmw@yahoo.com 651-285-8731 \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: small hammer \nSafety Equipment – Eye and ear protection \nLunch Arrangements: Bring your own food. SUMMARY:Volunteer Op: Fall Festival\, Holz Farm\, Eagan MN
DESCRIPTION:Harvest Festival– Saturday\, September 21\, 2024 | $3/person  |  11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. \nThe Friends of the Farm and Eagan Parks & Recreation invite you to join them for a day of fall fun. Visit Historic Holz Farm and enjoy hayrides\, live music\, animals and live demonstrations. A special fiddling  contest will take place at 1:00 p.m. Did you know that Historic Holz Farm is on the National Registry of Historic Places? This 1940’s era farm brings you back to yesteryear and what farming was like back in Eagan’s early days. Tickets are required for all individuals 12 months and older and are available at discovereagan.com or onsite.  \nNote from Zach Christiansen\, the champion:\nThe event is pretty relaxed. Show up a bit early\, clear out the shed so there is room to work (stumps\, fire pits\, some cobbler items) then I setup my forge and anvil so I’m ready for the day. After that it’s just making things\, talking to visitors/answering questions\, and I give away the items I make. Mostly I make hooks or duplex nail swords\, but any small quick to make item has been good for me. I’m sure someone could do larger items\, knives\, etc too. I also have a table setup to show other items I have made in classes. It gives another talking point. And of course keeping an eye out for those folks who are extra curious and making sure they get a brochure.

SUMMARY:Volunteer Op: Tori Music Festival at Finland Heritage Center 2024
DESCRIPTION:The Finland MN Historical Society first celebrated Midsummer Days in June with a May Pole\, some music\, and a few vendors.  About 1997 a local resident\, Paul Deaner\, started the free Music Festival which brought great musicians from near and far for the next few years.  In 2006 the Historical Society board decided to combine the two festivals\, move it to August\, and rename it the “Tori Music Festival”. \nWhat would a music festival be without music?  We have an amazing lineup this year with local legend Charlie Parr. Joining him for the festival will be THUG (the ever popular Two Harbors Ukulele Group)\, singer/songwriter John Agacki with songs from his recent album release: “Songs of the Lakes and Seas” – a collection of sea chanties and songs of the Great Lakes\, and the acoustic duo Gene LaFond and Amy Grillo performing their original songs as well as unique renditions of some of their favorite artists from Dylan to dirt-old country. \nIn Finnish\, Tori means “open marketplace” so it has grown to include local artists\, merchants\, and demonstrations such as blacksmithing\, fiber arts\, basket making\, spoon carving\, candle making\, broom making\, and many others.  You can purchase items from many vendors including knives\, pottery\, candles\, apparel\, books\, cards\, jewelry\, woodworking\, photography\, hand woven rugs\, flowers and plants\, and even hand crafted jams and maple syrup.  The huge variety changes every year\, so come out and see what’s new. \nAs a fundraiser for the Historical Society our volunteers sell food including our famous herring burgers\, sloppy joes\, potato salad\, grilled hot dogs and brats\, grilled corn on the cob\, homemade desserts\, pop\, root beer floats\, popcorn\, and more. \nThere is a silent auction with over 30 items to bid on\, including overnight stays in local venues\, gift certificates from local merchants\, as well as dining certificates\, and handmade goods.  We also have a cash raffle consisting of over $1500 in prizes. \nNew in 2023 we introduced Duluth Goat Yoga. Indeed\, you can practice yoga with a certified instructor and small friendly goats. Strike a pose or just sit back\, cuddle some goats\, and take some selfies. Anything goes! Relax and recharge in our tranquil orchard with the sweet and funny goats. It’s a one of a kind experience that has found its way to the North Shore. \nWe have a guest blacksmith showing how things used to be made by hand in our fully functional blacksmith shop. The American Heritage Girls will be offering games\, crafts\, and a music experience for kids at our new Imagination Station. Throughout the day there will be demonstrations from artists\, park rangers\, and even make-and-take art experiences for adults. And of course all the buildings at the Heritage Site are open to explore including our ever evolving museum with panel photo displays and artifacts depicting the history of the Finland\, MN area. \nThe event is FREE and there is plenty of parking on site.  Come for the day and enjoy the local atmosphere and people of Finland\, MN both today and in the past.  Free will donations are accepted and appreciated.  Your donations go to help preserve this fine historical site for generations to come. Follow our Facebook page for details and updates throughout the summer. You can preview the music\, learn about the artists\, and have a sneak peak at our silent auction.
