By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck. Please bring a dish to pass. \nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools Class 2021
DESCRIPTION:Handled Struck Tools \nInstructors: Jesse and Dave Gavin\, with support by Olson\, Fick\, and others \nClass size: 8 max\, 6 min. \nClass description: Prepare your own working tools with an introduction to the preparation and heat treatment of a popular tool steel.\nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel supplied will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from 1/4 and or 5/16 inch round CRS.\nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel. A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available.\nWe forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.Much of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”. The photo represents the work product. This class has been going annually for quite a while and has always filled. Credit for that goes to Jesse and Dave. (If this is too difficult a time\, Jim Scott is thinking he might offer the similar but different workshop using 5160 steel and tools that are longer (hand held) without handles. That would be toward spring and dependent on the turkey season in Missouri.)\nThe building will be open by 8 am\, introductions and coffee will start at 8:30\, in the shop by 9 AM. We usually finish just before 5 pm.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nPower grinders are supplied. Bring favorite hammer: (16 to 48 ounces). Tongs appropriate to ¼ inch\, 5/8 inch and ¾ inch round stock. (So far we have never run out of tools to share so this is not a big deal.)\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nOther Equipment: Bring a sense of humor. You will make a couple of mistakes.\nSpecial Instructions: Be on time. We cannot ask students to wait for late comers.\nLunch Arrangements: Bag it or go one of the local restaurants. There is a Culvers close and a bar with good lunches.\nHistory: The lead instructor is Jesse Gavin. He is supported by Dave Gavin\, Wayne Olson\, Herb Fick and others. Last year we cancelled the workshop in accord with state guidelines. We shared three different treadle hammers for the eight students. For reference\, probable students are invited to question former students including: Gene Thoma\, Bryan Carlson\, Derrick Phillips\, Wayne Olson\, Jim Moenck\, or Bob Brown.\nTo register for this class: Send a check for $85 made out to The Guild of Metalsmiths (on a piece of paper with your phone number\, email address\, and residential address) to our class manager:\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield MN 55057-2508\n507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell) herb@phyque.com\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:Fall Conference
DESCRIPTION:The Guild of Metalsmiths’ 44th Annual Fall Conference\, aka “The Madness”  happening September 17-19\, 2021.\n \nFor the first time we will be holding this event at the Pierce Country Fairgrounds in Ellsworth\, WI.  See the announcement below from Guild President\, Larry Wasmund:\n \nHello Members\,\nIt is extremely hard to believe that it is June already. There are things going on… but probably the biggest announcement we have heard is the end of the Covid-19 pandemic emergency protocols. This means that we can once again get together as a group to see each other\, share a meal\, talk about the last 15 months\, and get on with our mission of keeping our craft alive. \nThis past year plus has raised problems in the world. Unfortunately\, as restrictions loosen\, the pandemic will still affect us in ways we cannot yet know or understand. One way it will affect us is that the backlog of canceled and postponed events will impact the venues we use for our membership meetings. \nAs you all may be aware\, our board and committees have shifted into the major planning time for the Fall Conference\, aka “The Madness”. It is my unpleasant duty to inform the membership that because of the backlog of weddings\, the Little Log House Show Grounds is not available to host our event this year. I personally have been working with owner Steve Bauer since early April. Their facility had 50 weddings postponed during the pandemic and will be hosting multiple weddings every weekend this year. That includes Friday\, multiples on Saturday\, and even Sundays. This has made us scramble a little so planning may continue. \nThis September we will be holding our Madness at the Pierce County Fairgrounds in Ellsworth\, WI. The board toured the facility and found that the amenities offered gives the conference everything needed and more. There is a building with ventilation\, concrete floors\, and bathrooms to hold registration\, meals\, and the auction. Other buildings nearby can hold the demonstrations and there is ample parking all around. Camping is available on site with or without hookups. We feel this location will provide us an excellent venue for comparable costs to what we are accustomed to. For more information about the Fall Conference\, see future issues of The Forum and the forthcoming Fall Conference brochure. \nThe other news that I will share here is that in my discussions with Mr. Bauer we were informed there will not be an existing building available to us any longer at the Little Log House Show Grounds. This fact has rekindled talks of finding a relationship with a permanent facility that we could become partners with\, and in the future possibly find that home of our own where we could set up shop. \nThe board has authorized the forming of a Partnership Committee to research available locations and begin a dialog as to what is out there and what is being offered. Presently we have a list of possible locations we will be working through\, including having conversations with the Little Log House and others. If you have any interest in serving on this committee\, please contact any board member for further info. \nThat is all for now. Hope to see many of you very soon.\n— Larry Wasmund\, President of TGoM \n  \n

SUMMARY:February 2020 Hammerin/Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Come to forge\, visit\, and eat. Stay for a few hours or the full day.\nThe usual safety gear is required if you’ll be hanging out in the forge area: safety glasses\, natural-fiber clothing\, leather shoes or boots. Hearing protection is recommended.\nBring tools and metal for your project\, something for the potluck if you’d like\, and chip in for the cost of the coal.\nWe’ll be specifically inviting the people who just completed the beginners classes (who might not be Guild members yet) to try out their new skills\, make a project\, and meet some of our wonderful group of metalsmiths. Mentors (you know who you are) are encouraged to attend\, as well as those of you just missing the forge and fellowship during these winter months. We’ll try to keep the use of the forges rotating.\nIf you haven’t been to the School of Horseshoeing\, see the map at right. The blacksmith shop is heated and has 8 coal forging stations. There’s a classroom next to it with a refrigerator\, microwave\, tables and chairs that we’ll use for the food setup.\nContact:\nChristina Dodge\nEmail: christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nCall or text: 612-741-9292

SUMMARY:Forge Welding 2020 - Day 2 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Forge Welding 2-Day Class\nSaturday & Sunday\, February 22-23\, 2020\, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day\nLocation: Minnesota School of Horseshoeing (map page 7)\nInstructor: Dave Mariette\nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum: 6 \nForge welding. So\, you’ve seen it done. It looked so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask? David will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things\, there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing. Starting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll begin with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience move on to a few more advanced welding configurations. Possible projects this year: a flux spoon\, tripod\, chain\, leaves & tendrils “bouquet” and if time allows\, a basket twist. \nPrerequisite: Solid basic forging experience. We’ll be using coal forges.\nNew this year- advanced forge welding skills option:\nHave you taken this class in previous years\, or done some simple welds but nothing since? David will teach advanced techniques (concurrently with the basics) for those who have done forge welding and would like to progress their skills. Please let us know when registering.\nSafety Equipment: The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. Bring an apron if you have one.\nTools and Equipment: Hammer & tongs (for stock sizes to be listed in an acceptance letter). As part of the cost of the class\, students will be provided with their own wire “scratch” brush and a 1-lb. can of EZ Weld. Stock is provided.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and your contact information to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at (612) 741-9292 or email christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nRegistration for this class will be determined by postmark and confirmed with an acceptance letter.
