SUMMARY:February 2020 Hammerin/Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Come to forge\, visit\, and eat. Stay for a few hours or the full day.\nThe usual safety gear is required if you’ll be hanging out in the forge area: safety glasses\, natural-fiber clothing\, leather shoes or boots. Hearing protection is recommended.\nBring tools and metal for your project\, something for the potluck if you’d like\, and chip in for the cost of the coal.\nWe’ll be specifically inviting the people who just completed the beginners classes (who might not be Guild members yet) to try out their new skills\, make a project\, and meet some of our wonderful group of metalsmiths. Mentors (you know who you are) are encouraged to attend\, as well as those of you just missing the forge and fellowship during these winter months. We’ll try to keep the use of the forges rotating.\nIf you haven’t been to the School of Horseshoeing\, see the map at right. The blacksmith shop is heated and has 8 coal forging stations. There’s a classroom next to it with a refrigerator\, microwave\, tables and chairs that we’ll use for the food setup.\nContact:\nChristina Dodge\nEmail: christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nCall or text: 612-741-9292

SUMMARY:Forge Welding 2020 - Day 2 of 2
DESCRIPTION:Forge Welding 2-Day Class\nSaturday & Sunday\, February 22-23\, 2020\, 9:00 am to 5:00 pm each day\nLocation: Minnesota School of Horseshoeing (map page 7)\nInstructor: Dave Mariette\nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum: 6 \nForge welding. So\, you’ve seen it done. It looked so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask? David will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things\, there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing. Starting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll begin with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience move on to a few more advanced welding configurations. Possible projects this year: a flux spoon\, tripod\, chain\, leaves & tendrils “bouquet” and if time allows\, a basket twist. \nPrerequisite: Solid basic forging experience. We’ll be using coal forges.\nNew this year- advanced forge welding skills option:\nHave you taken this class in previous years\, or done some simple welds but nothing since? David will teach advanced techniques (concurrently with the basics) for those who have done forge welding and would like to progress their skills. Please let us know when registering.\nSafety Equipment: The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. Bring an apron if you have one.\nTools and Equipment: Hammer & tongs (for stock sizes to be listed in an acceptance letter). As part of the cost of the class\, students will be provided with their own wire “scratch” brush and a 1-lb. can of EZ Weld. Stock is provided.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and your contact information to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at (612) 741-9292 or email christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nRegistration for this class will be determined by postmark and confirmed with an acceptance letter. SUMMARY:December 2019 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Annual TGoM holiday gathering Sunday\, December 8 at CSPS Hall in St. Paul\, MN\nJoin Guild of Metalsmiths friends and families for our annual holiday gathering at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul (address 385 Michigan St\, at the corner of West 7th and Western). The hall will open at noon. We usually share hors d’ouvres as people arrive\, so bring your favorites if you wish. \nThe annual business meeting is first on the agenda\, including awards\, elections\, and the normal business stuff starting at 1:00 pm and going on for an hour or so. Your participation is key to this. That leads into show and tell\, and possibly an impromptu mini-auction. By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck. \nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. An elevator entrance is also located on the side just off the parking lot. Bring your family!\nAny questions about this meeting can be answered by contacting meeting champion Mike Frattalone at icemanfratt@aol.com.

SUMMARY:2019 Handled Struck Tools Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Jesse and Dave Gavin\, Herb Fick\, and others\nClass size: max 8 students; minimum 6 students \nHandled Struck Tools \nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel used will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe goal of the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from tool steel. The secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied. Bring your favorite hammers and tongs suitable for the stock if you have them.\nLast year we used three different treadle hammers for the eight students. SUMMARY:2019 Pre-Conference Class-Day 2 of 2 Days is FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Valerie Ostenak\, www.valerieostenak.com  \nSimple Curling Ribbon \nClass size: minimum 8\, maximum 15. \nDuring this two-day class\, guest instructor Valerie Ostenak will share the finesse of using hammer and anvil to cold-forge a sculptural neckpiece\, bracelet\, and earrings from non-ferrous metal. Copper wire of different gauges will be provided. Students may opt to bring silver.\nAs no forge work is needed and lighter hammers will be used\, a wide range of skill levels can be accommodated\, though basic beginner blacksmith skills are suggested as a pre-requisite for this class. Ms Ostenak’s project design can challenge intermediate and accomplished smiths as well.\nStudents should bring hammer and anvil. Borrowing an anvil might be a possibility; ask while registering. Dressing the hammer to a mirror-polish is one of the class activities. A few smaller tools will be detailed in an acceptance letter. There will be a buffing machine for shared use\, and a belt grinder.\nSet-up Wednesday evening or Thursday morning. Camping is available on-site. Equipment will need to be moved out Friday directly after class to make room for the Fall Conference weekend’s events. Plan to stay for the Friday evening conference kick-off: slide presentation by Valerie Ostenak\, potluck dinner\, and The Guild of Metalsmiths’ gallery opening!\nSafety glasses are mandatory\, as is proper clothing and protection for cold hammering\, machine buffing and grinding. (Natural fiber clothing & footwear. Sleeves\, shirttails\, and long hair should all be kept constrained so as not to catch in machinery.)\nQuestions? Contact:\nRichard Zielike\, (952) 983-0681\, richard@edinaclock.com\nTo register\, mail a check for $120 written to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” along with your contact information to:\nRichard Zielike\n5720 Lois Lane\nEdina\, MN 55439\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark and will be confirmed by email or snail mail. *Guild members have priority.
