SUMMARY:December 2019 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Annual TGoM holiday gathering Sunday\, December 8 at CSPS Hall in St. Paul\, MN\nJoin Guild of Metalsmiths friends and families for our annual holiday gathering at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul (address 385 Michigan St\, at the corner of West 7th and Western). The hall will open at noon. We usually share hors d’ouvres as people arrive\, so bring your favorites if you wish. \nThe annual business meeting is first on the agenda\, including awards\, elections\, and the normal business stuff starting at 1:00 pm and going on for an hour or so. Your participation is key to this. That leads into show and tell\, and possibly an impromptu mini-auction. By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck. \nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. An elevator entrance is also located on the side just off the parking lot. Bring your family!\nAny questions about this meeting can be answered by contacting meeting champion Mike Frattalone at icemanfratt@aol.com.

SUMMARY:2019 Handled Struck Tools Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Jesse and Dave Gavin\, Herb Fick\, and others\nClass size: max 8 students; minimum 6 students \nHandled Struck Tools \nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel used will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe goal of the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from tool steel. The secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied. Bring your favorite hammers and tongs suitable for the stock if you have them.\nLast year we used three different treadle hammers for the eight students. For reference\, probable students are invited to question former students including: Gene Thoma\, Bryan Carlson\, Kathleen Cantner\, Derrick Phillips\, Wayne Olson\, Jim Moenck\, or Bob Brown. This class has been going annually for quite a while and has always filled. Credit for that goes to the Jesse and Dave.\nTools and Equipment or other items to bring to the class: Bring favorite hammers and tongs or use ours.\nSafety Equipment: Cotton clothing\, gloves\, hearing protection\, safety glasses.\nLunch Arrangements: at local fast foods or bring your own\nTo register\, put your name\, phone number\, email and residential address on piece of paper\, fold it up with a check written to The Guild of Metalsmiths for $85 and send to Herb Fick\, who will manage the class.\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield MN 55057-2508\nContact Herb with questions: 507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell)\nherb@phyque.com\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:6-inch Lancashire-style Hacksaw Class 2019
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Martin Pansch\, Jim Ericksen\, Tom Sanders \nLancaster hacksaw \nClass size: Maximum students: 8 Minimum students: 4\nClass description:\nWhether you are looking for an addition to your period demonstration kit or just want to add some class to your 5-gallon bucket the Lancashire style hacksaw is just the dapper tool you have been looking for. In this class we will be making a 6-inch version of this classic style hacksaw (see photo) using mostly traditional techniques. We will be forging the frame\, drilling then drifting the hole square\, forging and cutting threads in a tensioning bolt and wing nut\, and filling the whole lot to a nice finish. Finally we will be burning a tang into a wooden handle and peening the tang. We will be working with relatively small stock (1/4″ thick) so one doesn’t have to be terribly strong but being able to forge to dimension and accurately split stock with a slitter or hot cut is necessary. We may use striking and top tools to facilitate some steps but it is not required. Students who successfully complete this class should have no problem scaling the process up to make a larger saw on their own if they wish. This is a class for intermediate to advance students.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nForging hammer\, tongs for ¼” and 3/16″ flat\, 3/8″ and ½” square\, ½” round\, hacksaw (ironic\, I know)\, slitter/hot cut\, ¼” or 3/8″ spring fuller or top and bottom fullers\, ¼” square drift\, ¼” tap and die (match threads preferably)\, set hammer\, sledge hammer\, a flatter\, a scrap of leather to keep from marring the near finished saw while in the vise\, hot rasp\, and a good selection of files (flat\, half round\, round bastards).\nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses\, ear plugs\, work gloves.\nSpecial Instructions: Limited accommodations available at the Pansch farm. Camping on site also available.\nLunch Arrangements: Either bring your own meals or we will figure out a collective feeding plan.\nTo register for this class\, send a check for $125 written out to The Guild of Metalsmiths to:\nMartin Pansch\n201 Nevada Street\nNorthfield\, MN 55057\nContact Martin at blacksmithingyeti@gmail.com or (612) 599-4762 with questions.\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:August 2019 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM membership meeting set for Wednesday\, August 14\nVenue: The Dan and LuAnn Pate estate.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August.\nTime: Serving at 6:30 pm\, business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM. Lunch is on your own; sometimes we miss it. \nDemo:\nRight now I have two offers for a demo. Both are pretty extensive\, and if we can swing it\, one will be before dinner and one following.\n1. The hatchet with welded bit\, Derrick\n2. Bolt tongs\, Brendon\nBoth have offered a demo complete with a story board and extensive preparation. Both have a striker arranged.\nMyron has offered a smithing station.\nDan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share).\nThe menu is a lot like last year’s because no one has offered an alternative.\nDick Carlson has offered the corn roast.\nHerb has offered the protein (Still pork and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb who is always a bit over-extended with the pig part of the deal.\nVegetables\, salads\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up.\nHere is the pitch:\nPeople who come early (like 8 AM) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Last year Wendy did mowing and Tom was group arborist. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again some time?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.”\nPlus Myron will offer the use of his forge from sort of noon on.\nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. Hiway 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN.\n— Herb Fick\, Champion of Champions!
