SUMMARY:Guild of Metalsmiths Meeting December 4\, 2022
DESCRIPTION:Join Guild of Metalsmiths families for our annual holiday gathering at the CSPS Hall in St. Paul (address 383 Michigan St.\, St. Paul\, MN 55102\, at the corner of West 7th and Western). The hall will open at noon. We usually share hors d’ouvres as people arrive\, so bring your favorites if you wish.\nThe annual business meeting is first on the agenda\, including awards\, elections\, and the normal business stuff starting at 1:00 pm and going on for an hour or so. See paragraph below for a proposed bylaws change to be discussed. Your participation is key to this. That leads into show and tell\, and possibly an impromptu mini-auction. By then\, we’ll all have worked up an appetite to sit down to our always delightful holiday potluck. Please bring a dish to pass.\nIf you’re a first-timer to this event\, just go upstairs at the front of the building when you get there. An elevator entrance is also located on the side just off the parking lot. Bring your family!\nAny questions about this meeting can be answered by contacting meeting champion Mike Frattalone at icemanfratt@aol.com. \nProposed change to TGoM bylaws\nBelow is a proposed change in the Meeting section of TGoM’s bylaws. The TGoM board is proposing to remove the words “THE SECOND WEDNESDAY OF THE”\, in the paragraph about the membership meetings.\nThe new language proposes this sentence to state “GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETINGS SHALL BE HELD SIX TIMES A YEAR. MEETINGS ARE SCHEDULED FOR THE MONTHS OF FEBRUARY\, APRIL\, JUNE\, AUGUST\, OCTOBER\, AND DECEMBER.”\nTo read the entire MEETINGS section and/or the bylaws in their entirety\, please follow the hyperlink below to the bylaws page on our website\, under the “MEETINGS” paragraph:\nhttps://www.metalsmith.org/about/bylaws/

SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools Workshop 2022
DESCRIPTION:Handled Struck Tools Workshop Featuring Jesse and Dave Gavin.\nPrepare your own working tools with an introduction to the preparation and heat treatment of a popular tool steel.   \nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle.  We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel supplied will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from 1/4 and or 5/16 inch round mild steel. \nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel.  A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers.  We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch. \nMuch of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process.  There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.  The photo represents the work product. \nPower grinders are supplied.  Bring your favorite hammers and tongs suitable for the stock if you have them.  So far we have never run out of Guild tools to share.   Bring your basic safety gear (leather\, cotton\, gloves\, eye and ear protection and safety shoes). The building will be open by 8 am\, introductions and coffee will start at 8:30\, in the shop by 9 AM.  We usually finish just before 5 pm. \nHistory: The lead instructor is Jesse Gavin. He is supported by Dave Gavin\, Wayne Olson\, and others. For reference\, probable students are invited to question former students including: Gene Thoma\, Bryan Carlson\,  Derrick Phillips\, Wayne Olson\, Jim Moenck\, or Bob Brown. \nTo register put your name\, phone number\, email and residential address on piece of paper\, fold it up with a check for $85 written to “Guild of Metalsmiths” and forward to Herb Fick\, who will manage the class. Minimum of six students.  Maximum is eight. This class has been going annually for quite a while and has always filled.  Credit for that goes to Jesse and Dave. \nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield MN 55057-2508\n507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell)\nherb@phyque.com \nAcceptance will be prioritized by postmark date.

SUMMARY:Saint Clement's Feast Day 2022
DESCRIPTION:Not sure what to do in the gap between The Madness and the Christmas party?\nCome Celebrate St. Clement’s Feast Day with Beer and Blacksmiths!\nObserved On Saturday\, 19 November 2022\nHosted by Torg Brewery and The Guild of Metalsmiths\nSt. Clement is (one of) the patron saint of blacksmiths and metalworkers. His feast day was a rare day off for these metal artisans when their toils at the forge was replaced by food and drink\, and the noise of the shop was replaced by the (one must assume off-tune) singing and toasting in pubs. Whether you are a smith or not\, come join us as we celebrate this heritage!\nWhere: 8421 University Avenue NE\, Spring Lake Park\, MN 55432\nWhen: The brewery is open 1PM to 11PM. Show up any time in there and look for blacksmiths. We should be easy to spot.\n· First drink is free for Guild members!\n· Bring potluck food/snacks suitable for a grazing Feast of St. Clement!\n· Bring show and tell items to impress your fellow Guilders and the non-smithing public!\n· Play Bocce Anvil (if I can repair them in time) and Pinch the Devil’s Nose!\n· If we are lucky Old Clem might even grace us with his presence!\nQuestions? Contact Martin Pansch\, 612-599-4762\, blacksmithingyeti@gmail.com

SUMMARY:August 10 TGoM Membership Meeting 2022
DESCRIPTION:The Venue: The Pate Estate. ( I like the alliteration) 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018\nThe Hosts: LuAnn and Dan Pate. This might be the seventeenth time we have been there.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August. (August 10)\nThe Time: Serving at 6:30 pm. Business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM.\nVolunteers and curious people start showing up before nine o’clock. Lunch is on your own\, sometimes it just doesn’t even happen. Sometimes it is at a bar in Randolph\, Cannon Falls or Dennison. Last year the Merritts seemed to take care of it.\nThe Demo:\nHerb has not obtained a demonstrator yet. Herb has in recent past talked Seth Merritt and Brendan Stevens to demonstrate\, attempting to showcase the young talent we have. (Note that people have rarely walked away from these demonstrations.) Herb is looking for a bit of guidance on this to see if this is a durable concept. We have also had vendors like Ken’s Iron and Hossfeld the last couple of years. Those demonstrations also got a lot of attention.\nMyron has offered a smithing station that will be available for the demonstrators and for teaching experience from noon on.)\nDan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share).\nThe menu is a lot like last years because no one has offered an alternative.\nLarry Sorensen has offered the corn roast. I suspect Dick Carlson helps in some way\, he just doesn’t take credit for it..\nHerb offered the protein (Still pork\, and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb\, who is always a bit over extended with the pig part of the deal.\nVegetables\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up. That is the responsibility of the members for a normal potluck\, except this is not really normal. Remember\, Dick Carlson started this\, and we need to keep it going.\nThis is also a good night to bring family and friends. It helps explain why our kind of people gather together. A lot has been going on\, so show-and-tell should be really good and difficult to keep moving along. The corn roast started out as “Family Night.”\nHere is the pitch for the help that it takes in addition to the stellar and consistent efforts put in by the Gavin crew for the meal.\nPeople who come early (like 8 AM to noon) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.”\nPeople take note of this last paragraph... I have used it for several years in a row with amazing results. I really need more than a few people to step up. Particularly\, we need people if the weather looks threatening. Dan has invested in a large party tent that takes some effort to assemble. We will not use it if the weather is good\, but it will save the day if it rains. (That has happened once.) We have always managed to leave the Pate estate looking pretty good. Please contact me about your willingness to help. Best to call my cell because I expect to see Northern Minnesota\, Montana\, Wyoming\, Idaho and South Dakota between now and then. (507 649 1611)\nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. HiWay 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN.The road is patrolled. I did a practice pig last Saturday!

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 25\, 1:00 pm – 4:00 pm\, Informational Session & Pattern Making Workshop (Class 1 of 3)\nSaturday\, July 9\, 9:00 am – 4:30 pm: Mold Making (continued Sunday if necessary) (Class 2 of 3)\nSaturday July 16\, 10 am – Evening: Mold Preparation & Pour (Class 3 of 3)\nInstructors: Hicks\, Bettenberg\, Brockman\, Zadworny\nClass size: 4 – 6\nRegistration Due June 11\, 2022\nWe’ll be casting silicon bronze into two-part (cope and drag) sand molds from your pattern. For beginners\, a flat-backed sculpted clay pattern is recommended (see photo). However\, if you have something specific that you’d like to cast\, please reach out to discuss the project before registration (costs may be over and above the basic class fee for individually tailored projects).\nNOTE: this is a three-Saturday workshop. Please do not register unless you are confident you will attend all three days. Pattern making\, mold making\, and casting metal are arts with no guarantees\, but you will certainly gain knowledge and hopefully have fun in this multi-disciplinary event.\nSaturday\, June 25 we will look at examples and talk about ways of creating a pattern to get a successful casting. We will also give an overview of mold making\, including sprue and vent systems.\nSaturday\, July 9 we’ll ram sand molds around your finished patterns. Bring lunch or there are places nearby.\nSaturday\, July 16 will be the day of the actual pour (weather permitting). First we will prepare the molds. You’ll have the opportunity to be on the pour crew. Before leaving\, you’ll cut the sprues and vents off your casting. You’re on your own for the finishing work. Bring lunch or there are places nearby.\nSafety First! You will need to bring: eye & ear protection\, leather gloves\, and wear proper clothing for metal work (leather\, cotton\, or wool).\nThis is an inclusive space. All identities are welcome. Please check your politics at the door. We’re here to have a good time and cast metal!\nTo register\, send your check made out to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and contact information to:\nMarty Hicks\n2223 Stewart Ave.\nSt. Paul\, MN 55116\nContact Marty with questions: hixwerx@gmail.com or 651-492-0899\nAcceptance priority for the class is determined by postmark.
