SUMMARY:Brass & Copper Decorative Techniques 2023
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Sara Gries \nClass size: Maximum students: 8 Minimum students: 6\nLocation: Guilded Salvage Antiques\, 4430 Lyndale Avenue North\, Minneapolis\, MN 55412\nDescription: Sara Gries will share what she’s learned from years of exploring/experimenting with brass and copper\, specifically for this class the decorative potential of various processes: etching\, creating patina (coloring) by means of chemical or heat reaction (“flame colouring”)\, plating and removal/abrasion. In addition\, she will share tips for design (how to transfer your idea to the metal\, how to make curves and fine areas appear visually smooth and balanced) and will demonstrate the practical application of cutting\, piercing\, and contouring techniques.\nThis is not a project class\, but you’ll have several “samplers” to take home as you\, too\, explore the potential to apply these techniques to your jewelry\, knife-making\, tinwork\, or copper smithing. There are no pre-requisite of skills for this class. Just bring your curiosity and safety glasses. We’d like to limit it this first time to adults\, as chemicals and a micro-torch will be used for a few techniques.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: None\nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses\nLunch Arrangements: Please bring your own\nAcceptance will be based on the postmark date of the tuition check and membership status — Guild members have priority for registration—and will be confirmed by a letter.\nTo register for this class\, send a check for $70 written to The Guild of Metalsmiths\, along with your phone number and email address\, to:\nChristina Dodge christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:Forge Welding 2-Day Class 2022
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: David Mariette and Gordon Barr \nForge welded leaf \nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nClass size: Maximum students: 8\, Minimum: 6\nForge welding: So\, you’ve seen it done. It looks so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask? David will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things\, there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing. Starting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll begin with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience move on to a few more advanced welding configurations. Possible projects this year: a flux spoon\, tripod\, chain\, leaves & tendrils “bouquet” and if time allows\, a basket twist.\nPrerequisite: Solid basic forging experience. We’ll be using coal forges.\nAdvanced forge welding skills option:\nHave you taken this class in previous years\, or done some simple welds but nothing since? David will teach advanced techniques (concurrently with the basics) for those who have done forge welding and would like to progress their skills. Please let us know when registering.\nSafety Equipment: The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. Bring an apron if you have one.\nTools and Equipment: Hammer & tongs (for stock sizes to be listed in an acceptance letter). As part of the cost of the class\, students will be provided with their own wire “scratch” brush and a 1-lb. can of EZ Weld. Stock is provided.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” and your contact information to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nRegistration for this class will be determined by postmark and confirmed with an acceptance letter. Guild members have priority.

SUMMARY:February 2020 Hammerin/Potluck
DESCRIPTION:Come to forge\, visit\, and eat. Stay for a few hours or the full day.\nThe usual safety gear is required if you’ll be hanging out in the forge area: safety glasses\, natural-fiber clothing\, leather shoes or boots. Hearing protection is recommended.\nBring tools and metal for your project\, something for the potluck if you’d like\, and chip in for the cost of the coal.\nWe’ll be specifically inviting the people who just completed the beginners classes (who might not be Guild members yet) to try out their new skills\, make a project\, and meet some of our wonderful group of metalsmiths. Mentors (you know who you are) are encouraged to attend\, as well as those of you just missing the forge and fellowship during these winter months. We’ll try to keep the use of the forges rotating.\nIf you haven’t been to the School of Horseshoeing\, see the map at right. The blacksmith shop is heated and has 8 coal forging stations. There’s a classroom next to it with a refrigerator\, microwave\, tables and chairs that we’ll use for the food setup.\nContact:\nChristina Dodge\nEmail: christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nCall or text: 612-741-9292

SUMMARY:Forge Welding Class 2018
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dave Mariette\nSaturday & Sunday\, November 17 & 18\, 9 am to 5 pm each day\nCost: $160 member\, $180 non-member\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum: 5\nForge welding. So\, you’ve seen it done. It looked so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask? David will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique\, and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing.\nStarting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll begin with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience move on to a few more advanced welding configurations. Some solid basic forging experience would be beneficial.\nSafety Equipment: The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. Bring an apron if you have one.\nTools and Equipment: As part of the cost of the class\, students will be provided with their own wire brush and a 1-lb. can of EZ Weld.\nLunch arrangements: Bring a bag lunch or visit one of the area restaurants.\nTo register for this class\, send a check payable to “The Guild of Metalsmiths” to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nContact Christina with questions at (612) 741-9292 or christina.guildmbr@gmail.com\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark. \nBio…David Mariette (64) metal guy\n• Welder\, fabricator\, blacksmith\, metal artisan\, blacksmith instructor.\n• Mid to late 1980s to present.\n• Active in The Guild 25 years +-\n• Recipient of Juaire/Hubler Award\, Guild of Metalsmiths.\n• Area of expertise: Architectural and traditional design iron.\n• “Forge welding when practiced and developed as a skill can be a valuable tool in your arsenal. You can create motifs and design by this means that cannot be created effectively any other way.” DM

SUMMARY:OxyAcetylene Welding 2-Day Class 2016 IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Myron Hanson\, Bill (the welder ©) Krawcjeski\, Dick Carlson\nMaximum students: 12\nStart as a new person to gas welding or improve your technique and safety with an oxy/acetylene torch. Myron has several teaching stations and\, together with Bill the Welder© and Dick Carlson\, has produced capable and safe welders for several years now.  Ask anyone who has taken this workshop for their recommendations and comments.\nSafety gear: requires normal safety gear. (We’ll list that in the acceptance letter). It will be acceptable if you choose to bring your own torch to get familiar with it. Otherwise there will be a torch and work station for each student.\nLunch: Students will supply their own lunch each day\, but coffee will be provided.\nRegister early; this one has always sold out. We expect the instructors to be very involved with the students. Students will learn basic safety principles using oxyacetylene (see Herb’s note below)\, welding a variety of thicknesses of steel\, and brazing.\nNote: Herb’s observation is that in general\, our members are far too willing to loan their torch to whoever implies that they have used one in the past.  I (Herb) believe there are important safety concepts that are associated with borrowing my torch\, and this class is a good opportunity to learn those concepts.\nQuestions? Contact Herb Fick (herb@phyque.com 507-663-0569) or Christina Dodge (newleafcreative@gmail.com 612-741-9292)\nAs of Sept. 15 this class is full. If you have questions\, please contact::\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303
