DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Bob Brown\, Dave & Jesse Gavin\, Herb Fick\, Wayne Olson\, George Auel \nClass size: Maximum students: 4                 Minimum students: 8 \nClass description: \nThis is Herb\, organizing yet another Handled Struck Tools Class for the day before the holiday party. We are electing Bob Brown to be our lead instructor this year. The Gavins\, Dave and Jesse\, are anxious to see how Bob would lead the workshop.\nWe will still use 4140 AN steel; 5/8 and ¾ diameter. We use this alloy because it is well known\, makes a good tool\, and makes a good example for teaching heat treating. The handle will be whatever Bob wants it to be as long as it uses 1018 rod. Special quench oil is supplied courtesy of the Northfield VFW. \nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel.  A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available.\nHerb procures the stock and a literature package reviewing the heat treat principles and a bit of really ancient history. The principle reference used will be the book Steel Metallurgy for the non-metallurgist by John Verhoeven.   (ISBN-13: 978-0-87170-858-8) This year’s demonstrator at the fall conference\, Howard Clark\, made a contribution to that book and is a friend of Verhoeven. The book is available through the internet without charge. \nThis crew has offered the workshop for quite a few years. They have developed many ways to offer guidance on technique. Ask anyone who has taken the workshop. Rarely has anyone left the day with less than two working tools\, punch or chisel. \nA feature of this particular workshop is the use of treadle hammers. We usually have three or four available for the participants to try/use and we encourage participants to also try striking for each other. Or ask a helper to strike\, to get a feel of how this is done in demonstrations at fairs and shows. \nOn Saturday\, December 6 we gather at 8 AM at the MN School of Horseshoeing\, Ramsey Minn. We do introductions\, safety\, and review the literature that gets sent out when people register. Then at 9 AM we are in the shop. Lunch is brown bag\, or area restaurants. We usually are shut down at 5 PM. \n

The workshop gives one the ability and confidence to modify and/or repair legacy and or neighbor’s tools. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch. Much of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. ( I like the alliteration) 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018\nThe Hosts: LuAnn and Dan Pate. This might be the seventeenth time we have been there.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August. (August 9)\nThe Time: Serving at 6:30 pm. Business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM.\n\nVolunteers and curious people start showing up before nine o’clock. Lunch is on your own. Sometimes \nit just doesn’t even happen. Sometimes it is at a bar in Randolph\, Cannon Falls or Dennison. \nThe Demo:\nHerb has not obtained a demonstrator yet. Herb has in the recent past talked to Seth Merritt and Brendan Stevens to demonstrate\, attempting to showcase the young talent we have. (Note that people have rarely walked away from these demonstrations.) Herb is looking for a bit of guidance on this to see if this is a durable concept. We have also had vendors like Hossfeld the last couple of years. Those demonstrations also got a lot of attention. \nMyron has offered a smithing station that will be available for the demonstrators and for teaching experience from noon on. Dan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share). \nThe Menu:\nThe menu is a lot like last years because no one has offered an alternative. \nRoger Degner is our new corn roast maven and will be keeping a watchful eye on the process! Thank you\, Roger! I suspect Dick Carlson helps in some way; he just doesn’t take credit for it.. \nHerb offered the protein (Still pork\, and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb\, who is always a bit over extended with the pig part of the deal. \nVegetables\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up. That is the responsibility of the members for a normal potluck\, except this is not really normal. Remember\, Dick Carlson started this\, and we need to keep it going. \nThe Purpose\nThis is also a good night to bring family and friends. It helps explain why our kind of people gather together. A lot has been going on\, so show-and-tell should be really good and difficult to keep moving along. The corn roast started out as “Family Night.” \nHere is the pitch for the help that it takes in addition to the stellar and consistent efforts put in by the Gavin crew for the meal. People who come early (like 8 AM to noon) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.” \nPeople: Take note of this last paragraph…\nI have used it for several years in a row with amazing results. There seems to always be an adequate assortment of tools for improving the landscape\, and time to remain well acquainted with members. People might want to bring their own. I really need more than a few people to step up. Particularly\, we need people if the weather looks threatening. Dan has invested in a large party tent that takes some effort to assemble. We will not use it if the weather is good\, but it will save the day if it rains. (That has happened once.) We have always managed to leave the Pate estate looking pretty good. \nPlease contact me about your willingness to help. Handles will be fabricated from 1/4 and or 5/16 inch round mild steel. \nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel.  A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers.  We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Scott\nClass size: 8 max\, 5 minimum \nThe day will include:\nPrepare a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch round stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools (no handles). We will heat treat using oil. We will have trainers who offer all kinds of help including striking. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy.\nStudents should have completed the Beginning Blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing Suitable tongs if you have them. A variety of Guild hammers are available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools. Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools. We will focus on the use of color and on the use of oil to determine grain size\, hardness and temper. We forge in the morning and heat treat and final grind in the afternoon.\nIf you are short on physical strength\, we will accommodate you with smaller stock and/or striking help. Bill the Welder © is offering to help\, along with others.\nFor background\, go to the February meeting and ask those who have participated in past Jim Scott classes. They are enthusiastic and often offer to help with the workshops. The Guild gave Jim a partial grant to take a tool making workshop. DESCRIPTION:Annual corn feed/hog roast comin’ right up! \nGuild of Metalsmiths membership meeting at Dan Pate’s shop August 8\nWhere: Dan Pate’s shop on Minnesota Hiway 56. Just three miles south of the Stanton airport at 357th street. Dan Pate does auto development and restoration. Again\, last year while we were cleaning up the mess on Thursday morning (I love the concept that we clean up after the party using a front end loader) I asked Dan if he was willing to give it one more time. He is very willing. This will be the ninth time Dan and LuAnn have hosted the August meeting. This makes them even more a super hero team. If this announcement seems redundant; well\, it just might be. Eight times this meeting has been a serious treat\, weather and all. We should test the odds once more. Dan has a backup plan for poor weather. Students should have completed the Beginning Blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing (Tongs if you have them). A variety of Guild hammers will be available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools. Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe goal of the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from tool steel. The secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied by Duggan\, Gavin\, BtW © and Fick.\nBring your favorite hammers\, tongs suitable for the stock if you have them\, and eye and ear protection. DESCRIPTION:Calla lily storyboard  \nInstructor: Myron Hanson\nClass size: 8 max.\nProduce at least four people who can make a small Calla lily in less time than it takes the average curious power / steam show visitor to get bored with the process.  It is not Guild policy\, but I would like to emphasize this to people who want to demonstrate for the public. (Become a demonstrator!!!!!!!!!!!)\nThink of this as a class for relatively advanced forgers\, but there is no need for metallurgy.  Wayne Olson was doing well on Armed Forces Day demonstrations in May.\nI’ve shown the story board (Ring of samples really) at several meetings now.  It is a fair representation of the lilies that grow near Larry Britton’s place on the Scenic Hiway North of Hiway 2.  Myron prepared the examples and Myron is lead teacher for this workshop.\nCost is nominal ( $60 ) because we will not be spending a lot on materials. DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM family meeting & corn feed set for Wednesday\, August 10\nMeeting champion Herb Fick submits the following: \nKen Zitur’s MZ75 Power Hammer  \nThe August meeting is once again at Dan Pate’s\, 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN. (map link below)\, and is much a repeat of last year.\nWe believe we have Ken and Mary Lou Zitur demonstrating a relatively large power hammer that he has developed to sell. Ken will welcome people to “test drive” the 75 pound hammer assuming they have proper attitude\, clothing\, and hearing and eye protection. (And bring their own stock to try.)\nI’m working on making sure that we have power and air for the power hammer.\nDick Carlson provides the ever-popular corn feed. I have ordered a hog\, some chickens\, and lots of garlic.\nDan has machinery to show that he did not have last year (surprise).\nWe will want a few laborers to help arrange Dan’s shop starting sort of at 9 AM. Thanks for those who helped last year.  We need setup volunteers for early and for all day. It’s a good way to get acquainted with the members\, and it makes work lighter. Besides\, Gary Myers and Jim Moenck are nice people. People should want to come early just to be near them\, and to get garlic all over them!\nBTW: Highway 56 is heavily patrolled. I would hate to see a peach pie being held up by the highway patrol while some hapless member tries to talk his way out of a ticket!\nAnd everyone should pray for good weather. We have been incredibly fortunate at Dan’s these last now several years.\nPotluck meal starts at 6:30 pm\, as usual. Food providers should probably not focus on meat. The hog and a few chickens just might be adequate. Think vegetables\, soup\, pies and cakes and\, of course\, raisin oatmeal cookies for Myron Hanson. SUMMARY:Struck Tools Workshop April 2016 IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Scott\nClass size: 8 max\, 5 minimum\nThe day will include: Preparing a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools without handles. We will be hand forging as individuals. We will heat treat using oil. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy. Students should have completed the Beginning Blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing (Tongs if you have them). A variety of hammers will be available for trials.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools.  Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques for restoring and heat treating tools.  We will focus on the use of color and the basic techniques used in heat treating. Let us know if you are short on physical strength\, and we will accommodate you with smaller stock and/or striking help.\nFor background\, go to the February Guild meeting on Wednesday\, Feb. 10\, and ask those who have participated in past Jim Scott classes.  They are enthusiastic and often offer to help with the workshops. Jim has offered this training very successfully for many years. Jim offers this in a one day workshop at the Minnesota School of Horseshoeing on April 9 2016.\nThe stock and expertise is supplied by Jim. SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools 2015
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: (Lead) Jesse Gavin\, supported by Dave Gavin\, Herb Fick\, and others \nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle.  We will use treadle hammers. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied.\nSteel will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe exercise will include forging and basic heat treatment of the tools.  We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process.  There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied by Duggan\, Gavin\, BtW © and Fick. We still have a couple of belts supplied by our abrasive friends at 3M.\nBring your favorite hammers\, tongs suitable for the stock if you have them\, and eye and ear protection.  Bring your basic safety gear (leather\, cotton\, gloves\, and safety shoes).
