SUMMARY:August 2019 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM membership meeting set for Wednesday\, August 14\nVenue: The Dan and LuAnn Pate estate.\nThe Date: Second Wednesday in August.\nTime: Serving at 6:30 pm\, business meeting following dinner (brief). Activities start about 8 AM. Lunch is on your own; sometimes we miss it. \nDemo:\nRight now I have two offers for a demo. Both are pretty extensive\, and if we can swing it\, one will be before dinner and one following.\n1. The hatchet with welded bit\, Derrick\n2. Bolt tongs\, Brendon\nBoth have offered a demo complete with a story board and extensive preparation. Both have a striker arranged.\nMyron has offered a smithing station.\nDan will have tools you have never dreamed of (Dan always has something new to share).\nThe menu is a lot like last year’s because no one has offered an alternative.\nDick Carlson has offered the corn roast.\nHerb has offered the protein (Still pork and if you ask nicely\, chicken). Jim and Gary and perhaps Seth and one or two others will bail out Herb who is always a bit over-extended with the pig part of the deal.\nVegetables\, salads\, sweets\, drinks and interesting stuff like pickled pike bits seem to reliably show up.\nHere is the pitch:\nPeople who come early (like 8 AM) have the option to help clean up the Pate estate and enjoy the comradery of the sort of folk who enjoy contributing to the pleasure of the evening. Last year Wendy did mowing and Tom was group arborist. Others learn to handle exotic cars while moving them out of our way. For years we have enjoyed this venue and for years while cleaning up the next day I have asked Dan “How about doing this again some time?” And Dan says “Yes\, let’s.”\nPlus Myron will offer the use of his forge from sort of noon on.\nSo far\, there are no tricks on the route to Dan’s. Hiway 56 and 357th street. Dennison MN.\n— Herb Fick\, Champion of Champions!

SUMMARY:Struck Tools Workshop 2019
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Scott\nClass size: 8 max\, 5 minimum \nThe day will include:\nPrepare a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch round stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools (no handles). We will heat treat using oil. We will have trainers who offer all kinds of help including striking. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy.\nStudents should have completed the Beginning Blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing Suitable tongs if you have them. A variety of Guild hammers are available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools. Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools. We will focus on the use of color and on the use of oil to determine grain size\, hardness and temper. We forge in the morning and heat treat and final grind in the afternoon.\nIf you are short on physical strength\, we will accommodate you with smaller stock and/or striking help. Bill the Welder © is offering to help\, along with others.\nFor background\, go to the February meeting and ask those who have participated in past Jim Scott classes. They are enthusiastic and often offer to help with the workshops. The Guild gave Jim a partial grant to take a tool making workshop. This is something like his sixteenth payback workshop.\nI’ll bring some rolls\, we will offer coffee. Lunch is brown bag or local lunch counters. Early registration really helps us plan. Background study materials will be forwarded after registration.\nQuestions? Contact Herb: herb@phyque.com      507 663 0569        507 649 1611 (cell)\nTo register for this workshop simply forward your interest\, a check for $70 written to The Guild of Metalsmiths\, and complete contact information to:\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield\, MN 55057-2508\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools Workshop 2018
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Jesse (lead instructor) and Dave Gavin\, other \nHandled struck tools \nMinimum six students Maximum eight.\nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to use treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Last year we used 3 different treadle hammers for the eight students. Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied. Steel used will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 AN for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe goal of the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from tool steel. The secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied. Bring your favorite hammers and tongs suitable for the stock if you have them. Bring your basic safety gear (leather\, cotton\, gloves\, eye and ear protection and safety shoes). This class has been going annually for quite a while and has always filled. Credit for that goes to Jesse and Dave.\nTo register put your name\, phone number\, email and residential address on piece of paper\, fold it up with a check for $85 written to The Guild of Metalsmiths\, and send to Herb Fick\, class manager. Questions? 507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell) herb@phyque.com\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street\nNorthfield MN 55057-2508\nAcceptance priority for this class will be determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:August 2018 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Annual corn feed/hog roast comin’ right up! \nGuild of Metalsmiths membership meeting at Dan Pate’s shop August 8\nWhere: Dan Pate’s shop on Minnesota Hiway 56. Just three miles south of the Stanton airport at 357th street. Dan Pate does auto development and restoration. Again\, last year while we were cleaning up the mess on Thursday morning (I love the concept that we clean up after the party using a front end loader) I asked Dan if he was willing to give it one more time. He is very willing. This will be the ninth time Dan and LuAnn have hosted the August meeting. This makes them even more a super hero team. If this announcement seems redundant; well\, it just might be. Eight times this meeting has been a serious treat\, weather and all. We should test the odds once more. Dan has a backup plan for poor weather. The shop is a bit bigger now. \n35730 Hiway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN 55018 \nNote: It seems unusual\, but right now the roads are open!!\nStarting time: Dinner at 6:30. Set up starting is any time before noon. Jim Moenck\, Gary Myers and Herb will be starting a fire about 9AM. We have Myron Hanson willing to host an open forge from 1 PM on. Come and make something. We have asked Seth Merritt to lead the evening demonstration. We are trying to get people who are available to come early and enjoy the day. Seth\, Cliff\, Tom and Wendy have already offered to move cars\, trim trees and mow\, but more help is always welcome. Call Herb to volunteer! 507-663-0569\, or cell 507 649 1611.\nn We could use one or two people with a guilty conscience to come by on Thursday morning to help with the cleanup. If you don’t have to come too far and/or if you want to see how Dan works\, it would be appreciated.\nFeatures:\nThis meeting features and is known as The Corn Feed. Dick Carlson has put his heart into this for years. Some of us have humbly joined in the effort. Mike Alm set a new\, very high standard preparing ribs for the June meeting. The August crew will try to do a good job.\nHerb\, Jim and Gary plan to roast another hog. We do not promise to cut back on the garlic (unless someone has a good reason). Apprentice hog roasters are always welcome. Once again a few chickens will be prepared for those who avoid pork. Recognize the chickens will be prepared by smoking and secondary roasting in the cavity of the hog. (Some have dietary restrictions.)\nDan has a unique collection of ways to form metal sheets into almost anything you desire. He can demonstrate all of these and offers to take requests. Dan’s equipment mix has changed again this year\, so do not think that you have already seen it all. He has also expanded the space under cover so we are less subject to weather. Dan often allows members to experiment with a machine: your liability. You might learn to handle a machine that will shrink\, stamp\, fold\, staple or mutilate 10 gage steel very carefully. (Often someone demonstrates the effect of an “English Wheel” on a finger.) Safety officers take note! This paragraph is from last year\, and is still the current information.\nThis is family and friends night. We have had some wonderful evenings at Dan and LuAnn’s park-like setting. Show and tell will be good. Do everything you can to be there. This is intended to be a very family friendly and social meeting. To emphasize the family concept I have asked Seth Merritt (a young blacksmith) to demonstrate projects that members can adopt for demonstrations at places like the power shows and fairs. They will be products that you can afford to offer to the onlookers either free or for less than $20.\nWhen planning your contribution to the potluck\, please recognize that we will be a bit long on sweet corn and meat\, so think salads\, breads\, and desserts or whatever you think is special. If you need a hint\, Myron especially likes oatmeal cookies with lots of raisins.\nn Post note: There have been requests for smoked chickens to take home. They are not available on short notice. Our friend the butcher will have a few available at the end of the month\, but not at the meeting. These chickens are local (Kenyon)\, organic and smoked to order. They are not a commodity item.\nSo show up. And be sure to thank the Gavins who graciously show up with the tables\, chairs\, and service items.\nAm I still making it sound like I enjoy this?\n— Herb Fick

SUMMARY:August 2017 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Corn feed\, hog roast\, TGoM potluck\, demonstrations…what more could we ask for at our August 9 family and friends meeting?\nWhere:  Dan Pate’s shop on Minnesota Highway 56. Just three miles south of the Stanton airport at 357th street. Dan Pate does auto development and restoration.  Again\, last year while we were cleaning up the mess on Thursday morning (Using a front end loader!) I asked Dan if he was willing to give it one more time.  He is very willing.  This will be the eighth time Dan and LuAnn have hosted the August meeting.  This makes them even more a super hero team.  If this announcement seems redundant; well\, it just might be.  Seven times this meeting has been a serious treat\, weather and all.  We should test the odds once more.\n35730 Hiway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN  55018\nNote:   Right now the bridge is out one mile south of the Stanton airport.  You have to approach from the South.  That may change by 9 August but this is your warning.\nStarting time: Dinner at 6:30.  Set up starting is any time before noon.  Jim Moenck\, Gary Myers  and Herb Fick will be starting a fire about 9AM.  I’m thinking it would be great if we ended up with a bouquet of calla lilies or roses by the time we do show and tell.  We are trying to get people who are available to come early and enjoy the day.  Tom and Wendy have already offered to trim trees and mow\, and a bit more help would be very welcome.  “This is part of what we  mean by enjoy the day.”\nFeatures for the day:\nMyron Hanson will host an open forge from 1 PM on. Come and make something. Tom Sheely will have some roses to mimic. \n\nJim Moenck is offering the demonstration of the heat treating of a knife blade.  Jim has been working on his bladesmith certification and the effort will be fresh in his  mind.   It seems all new members want to make a knife and this is their chance to  know more about what they are getting into.\nDan Pate is offering to demo any of his “skinny metal” machines during the afternoon.  Those with an interest in metal shaping of materials thinner than 10 gage really should not miss this chance. Dan has a unique collection of ways to form metal sheets into almost anything you desire. He can demonstrate all of these and offers to take requests.  Dan’s equipment mix has changed again this year\, so do not think that you have already seen it all.  Dan often allows members to experiment with a machine.  Your liability\, you might learn to handle a machine that will shrink\, stamp\, fold\, staple or mutilate 10 gage steel very carefully.  (Someone usually demonstrates the effect of an “English Wheel” on a finger.)    Safety officers take note!\nThis meeting features and is known as The Corn Feed.  Dick Carlson has put his heart into this for years.  Some of us have humbly joined in the effort.\nHerb plans to roast a hog.  He does not promise to cut back a little on the garlic (unless someone has a good reason).  He will probably go back to butter for basting. Once again a  few chickens will be prepared for those who avoid pork.  Recognize the chickens will be prepared by smoking and secondary roasting in the cavity of the hog.  (Some have dietary restrictions.)\n\nThis is family and friends night.  We have had some wonderful evenings at Dan and LuAnn’s park like setting.  Show and tell will be good.  Do everything you can to be there. This is intended to be a very family friendly and social meeting.\nWhen planning your contribution to the potluck please recognize that we will be a bit long on sweet corn and meat so think salads\, breads\, and desserts or whatever you think is special.  As per last year\, if you need a hint\, Myron especially likes oatmeal cookies with lots of raisins.\nPost note:  Last year there were requests for smoked chicken to take home.  They are not available on short notice.  I think we can accommodate these needs (wants?) if you get your order to Herb at least two weeks before the meeting.  These chickens are local\, organic and smoked to order.  They are not a commodity item. Am I making it sound like I enjoy this? …….  Herb Fick \nDIRECTIONS TO DAN PATE’S FROM THE SOUTH… \nIf you’re coming from the North\, focus on getting to Northfield\, Stanton\, or Cannon Falls. \n\nFrom Northfield take the road to Dennison instead of State Road 19 to Stanton.\nThree miles East of Dennison you find State Road 56.  Just go North about two miles.\nFrom Stanton go West just over a mile. Goodhue Avenue goes South.  It sort of parallels 56 to 350 Street.  Go east a half mile and then go South again until 357th street. East on 357th until you get to Pates driveway.\nFrom Cannon Falls go west (from 56) about a half mile  to the Oxford mill road. Then south sort of following the main road until it turns into County 24. County road 24 intersects Hiway 56\, then and go North on 56 two miles to Dan’s.\nWhat makes this important is that cell phone reception near Pate’s dies out for most people.\nIf lost try to call Herb (507 649 1611).  We will get a few signs at the intersections.\nCome early. Demos start around 1. Potluck meal is at 6:30.\n\nDetailed map to Dan’s by avoiding the bridge that’s out…

SUMMARY:Struck Tools Workshop 2017
DESCRIPTION:This advertisement is a feeler. There are competing demands for the day.  (Mark Aspery joinery class and Armed Forces day demonstrations in Dundas for starters)  The MN School of Horseshoeing is available. Jim Scott may not be available. I (Herb) have been Jim’s apprentice for this class for the past several years and am willing to carry on if Jim cannot make it. This notice does not follow our 3 month class advertising requirements.  (That is an apology.)  If enough interest is forwarded soon\, we will carry on.  Do not send money yet.\nThe day will include:\nPrepare a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch round stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools without handles. We usually have strikers who offer all kinds of help. We will heat treat using oil. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy. Students should have completed the Beginning blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing (Tongs if you have them). A variety of hammers will be available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools.  Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools.  We will focus on the use of color and the basic techniques used in heat treating. Let us know if you are short on physical strength and we will accommodate you with smaller stock and/or striking help.\nFor background\, attend the April 12 membership meeting and ask those who have participated in the past Jim Scott classes. They are enthusiastic and often offer to help with the workshops.  Jim has offered this training very successfully for many years.\nTo register for this workshop simply forward your interest and complete contact information to:\nHerb Fick\n519 East Eighth Street                    Questions?\nNorthfield\, MN 55057-2508                Contact Herb     via email at herb@phyque.com\nAcceptance priority is determined by postmark (or e-mail message date).  I’ll bring some rolls; we will offer coffee.  Lunch is brown bag or local lunch counters.  Early registration really helps us plan.

SUMMARY:Calla Lily Class 2016 is FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Calla lily storyboard \nInstructor: Myron Hanson\nClass size: 8 max.\nProduce at least four people who can make a small Calla lily in less time than it takes the average curious power / steam show visitor to get bored with the process.  It is not Guild policy\, but I would like to emphasize this to people who want to demonstrate for the public. (Become a demonstrator!!!!!!!!!!!)\nThink of this as a class for relatively advanced forgers\, but there is no need for metallurgy.  Wayne Olson was doing well on Armed Forces Day demonstrations in May.\nI’ve shown the story board (Ring of samples really) at several meetings now.  It is a fair representation of the lilies that grow near Larry Britton’s place on the Scenic Hiway North of Hiway 2.  Myron prepared the examples and Myron is lead teacher for this workshop.\nCost is nominal ( $60 ) because we will not be spending a lot on materials. (3/8 Hot roll steel\, coal and nominal rent.)  We will organize room for eight\, and I am not worried about filling the class.  I’ve heard serious interest.\nLunch arrangements: Will be provided!\nBring: your favorite hammer\nSafety equipment: safety glasses\, ear plugs and work gloves are mandatory. Other safety equipment may include: leather apron\, cotton clothing\, pants\, leather shoes.\nTo register for this workshop\, send a check for $60 made out to Guild of Metalsmiths AND your contact info to:\nHerb Fick\n519 Eighth Street East\nNorthfield MN 55057\nFor questions: 507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell)\nAcceptance priority is determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:August Membership Meeting 2016
DESCRIPTION:Next TGoM family meeting & corn feed set for Wednesday\, August 10\nMeeting champion Herb Fick submits the following: \nKen Zitur’s MZ75 Power Hammer \nThe August meeting is once again at Dan Pate’s\, 35730 Highway 56 Blvd\, Dennison MN. (map link below)\, and is much a repeat of last year.\nWe believe we have Ken and Mary Lou Zitur demonstrating a relatively large power hammer that he has developed to sell. Ken will welcome people to “test drive” the 75 pound hammer assuming they have proper attitude\, clothing\, and hearing and eye protection. (And bring their own stock to try.)\nI’m working on making sure that we have power and air for the power hammer.\nDick Carlson provides the ever-popular corn feed. I have ordered a hog\, some chickens\, and lots of garlic.\nDan has machinery to show that he did not have last year (surprise).\nWe will want a few laborers to help arrange Dan’s shop starting sort of at 9 AM. Thanks for those who helped last year.  We need setup volunteers for early and for all day. It’s a good way to get acquainted with the members\, and it makes work lighter. Besides\, Gary Myers and Jim Moenck are nice people. People should want to come early just to be near them\, and to get garlic all over them!\nBTW: Highway 56 is heavily patrolled. I would hate to see a peach pie being held up by the highway patrol while some hapless member tries to talk his way out of a ticket!\nAnd everyone should pray for good weather. We have been incredibly fortunate at Dan’s these last now several years.\nPotluck meal starts at 6:30 pm\, as usual. Food providers should probably not focus on meat. The hog and a few chickens just might be adequate. Think vegetables\, soup\, pies and cakes and\, of course\, raisin oatmeal cookies for Myron Hanson. He will be hungry because we will talk him into coming early and doing small demonstrations prior to the meeting.\nCall Herb Fick with questions: 507 663 0569 or 507 649 1611 (cell)
