DESCRIPTION:Pipe Tomahawk \n Instructor: Martin Pansch\,               612-599-4762                    blacksmithingyeti@gmail.com \nClass size: Max 8\, Min 5 \nClass Description: A pipe tomahawk was a ceremonial item for Native American people from the late 17th to late 19th century. Often given as a gift at treaty signings\, it was often a highly decorative item containing symbols of both violence and peace. In this class we will be forging one using mostly traditional techniques. \nStudents will start with a piece of thick walled pipe that is split. We will open the two halves\, shape it around a drift\, and forge weld the halves together. We’ll forge weld a tool steel bit into the cutting end then forge and cut the blade to shape before turning our attention to the pipe end. If time allows we will dive into heat treating and decoration. \nA firm grasp of blacksmithing basics is essential for the best chance of success in this class. Experience with forge welding is helpful as well. \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class. \nA good cross peen hammer (the peen can’t be too sharp)\, rrounding hammer\, hacksaw\, wire brush\, flux\, hot rasp\, hot set/cut\, tongs for holding 1/8” to 3/16” flat\, tongs for holding 1” round might be useful but not necessary. A good half round file and ½” diameter round file if you have them\, in case we get into decoration. If you have a ½” round spring fuller or guillotine tool you can bring that too otherwise we will have several to share. \nSafety Equipment – safety glasses\, ear protections\, work gloves\, long pants\, no open toe shoes\, and no synthetic fiber clothing. SUMMARY:6-inch Lancashire-style Hacksaw Class 2019
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Martin Pansch\, Jim Ericksen\, Tom Sanders \nLancaster hacksaw \nClass size: Maximum students: 8 Minimum students: 4\nClass description:\nWhether you are looking for an addition to your period demonstration kit or just want to add some class to your 5-gallon bucket the Lancashire style hacksaw is just the dapper tool you have been looking for. In this class we will be making a 6-inch version of this classic style hacksaw (see photo) using mostly traditional techniques. We will be forging the frame\, drilling then drifting the hole square\, forging and cutting threads in a tensioning bolt and wing nut\, and filling the whole lot to a nice finish. Finally we will be burning a tang into a wooden handle and peening the tang. We will be working with relatively small stock (1/4″ thick) so one doesn’t have to be terribly strong but being able to forge to dimension and accurately split stock with a slitter or hot cut is necessary. We may use striking and top tools to facilitate some steps but it is not required. Students who successfully complete this class should have no problem scaling the process up to make a larger saw on their own if they wish. This is a class for intermediate to advance students.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:\nForging hammer\, tongs for ¼” and 3/16″ flat\, 3/8″ and ½” square\, ½” round\, hacksaw (ironic\, I know)\, slitter/hot cut\, ¼” or 3/8″ spring fuller or top and bottom fullers\, ¼” square drift\, ¼” tap and die (match threads preferably)\, set hammer\, sledge hammer\, a flatter\, a scrap of leather to keep from marring the near finished saw while in the vise\, hot rasp\, and a good selection of files (flat\, half round\, round bastards).\nSafety Equipment: Safety glasses\, ear plugs\, work gloves.\nSpecial Instructions: Limited accommodations available at the Pansch farm. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Erickson\nMax students: 6\nTIG (shorthand for Gas Tungsten Arc) welding has become the industrial standard when precise\, neat welds are required. You will find it used on everything from bicycle frames to nuclear reactor coils. In this class Jim Ericksen will try to bestow as much of his many year of experience with TIG into a day. After a little bit of basic theory we will jump right into welding coupons of stainless steel using some top-of-the-line equipment. No previous welding experience needed but the number of types of welds we learn will be determined by how fast people pick up on what is being taught (i.e. if you have some relatable experience going in\, you might get further along). SUMMARY:2018 Wire Inlay Class IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Martin Pansch\, Stephen Olivo \nThe class will focus on wire inlay into mild steel. This is a technique that can be used to add decorative elements to many of your projects. Students will chase grooves in the metal and then chase the bottoms of the grooves square. The two corners thus created will be chased to form an undercut channel. The upper edges of the channels will be chased and filed to create grooves of even width. Copper wire will be planished into the grooves so that the softer metal forms to fit the undercut and it locked in place. Surfaces will then be filed smooth leaving a pattern to show the differ color of the metals. Copper wire will be provided to practice inlay on flat pieces that can be held firmly in a vise.\nThis class will concentrate on the basics of the straight lines\, curved lines\, and dots. We’ll cover both wire that is filed flush with the surface of the steel and left as a raised bead.\nRequired Equipment: A basic set of small chisels will be provided for students for use in the class. Those over achievers who want to make their own prior to class can request detailed descriptions of the needed tools. Students will also need a light\, soft face hammer for striking tools.\nThis hammer should be light enough that thousands of blows will not be tiring. A cheap Chinese ball peen will likely need no softening. Additional tools include: A mill file\, a hack saw\, sand paper\, sharpening stones (a diamond lap plate works well)\, paper\, pencil\, Sharpie TM. The first day of class students will concentrate on making welded butterfly hinges and hasps. The second day of the class students will be taken through forging bale handles\, plates\, cotter pins and nails. This is a class for those with solid intermediate level skills. Students should be familiar with forge welding\, have good hammer control and be able to control where they spread their steel. Demonstration will be for basic functional hardware designs but students may choose to more decorative styles as their abilities and tolerance for risk allow.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class. Or are you contemplating getting a power hammer but want to know more about them first? DESCRIPTION:Instructors:  Martin Pansch\, Larry Wasmund\, Rick Wessling\, Marty Masters\, other exciting guest instructors to be determined later.\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum 4\nTongs\, while deceptively simple looking\, contain a lot of considerations in making them. They should fit the work\, fit your hand\, be long enough but not too long\, sturdy enough but not too heavy\, and constructed in a way that lasts despite heavy use. This class will look at these factors and more as we learn to make tongs using the classic 3-shoulder method. Those with less experience will be encouraged to stick with flat bit tongs but the modifications needed for bolt\, pick up\, box jaw\, etc will be demonstrated and can be tried by the more bold. Students should have already completed the beginner class or equivalent. Techniques involved will include half-face blows\, forging to dimension\, drawing\, punching and riveting. We might play a little with striking for each other. The goal is for students to leave with the knowledge needed to make any tongs they need in the future with little more than a hammer\, anvil\, forge and punch.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class.  Your favorite blacksmithing hammer\, ¼ to 3/8″ round punch if you have one. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Susan Wood\nThis class will include a lecture and images on how clock mechanisms are designed and built\, including the influence of the blacksmith in early clocks and tools. We will cover the evolution of escapements from foliot to pendulum to balance wheel. How sources of power influence the mechanism with weights springs fusee and Geneva stops. We will do the math of gear ratios and tooth profiles. There will be a look into time trains\, chime trains\, and strike trains and how they work together. We will look at how early clocks were hand-built\, then the first machines built by blacksmiths that clockmakers used. They are Jeff Farmer of Berea\, Kentucky\, and Freddy Rodriquez of Fusagasuga\, Colombia. A pre-conference class with Jeff Farmer as instructor will be held Thursday and Friday\, Sept. 15 and 16. SUMMARY:Boot Scraper Class 2016
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Tom Sander\nClass size: Maximum students: 6    Minimum students: 3 \nIf you have walked around rural Minnesota in the spring you have likely become quite a connoisseur of how different mud sticks to your boots. It is also likely this appreciation has also seen you banned from entering the house prior to shedding pounds of you boot covering muddy goodness. Well your troubles are at an end! In this class Tom Sander will lead students in making boot scrapers. Students can chose from making a free standing scraper with a hand hold (pictured)\, one with stakes to drive into the ground\, or one intended to be anchored into concrete. This is an intermediate skill level class that included punching/drifting\, limiters mortice and tenon joinery\, and being able to forge several pieces to match a drawing (and each other). Striking will be used in this class both for drawing steel and top tool use. This is a two day class but there is room for a few people to stay overnight at the Pansch homestead\, assuming you are okay with cats. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Erickson \nTIG (short hand for Gas Tungsten Arc) welding has become the industrial standard when precise\, neat welds are required. You will find it used on everything from bicycle frames to nuclear reactor coils. In this class Jim Ericksen will try to bestow as much of his many year of experience with TIG into a day. After a little bit of basic theory we will jump right into welding coupons of stainless steel using some top-of-the-line equipment. No previous welding experience needed but the number of types of welds we learn will be determined by how fast people pick up on what is being taught (i.e. if you have some relatable experience going in\, you might get further along). Note: The Guild is not responsible for helping you come up with what to tell your significant other about why you HAVE to get a TIG welder after this class. SUMMARY:Flat Bit Tongs Class April 2016
DESCRIPTION:Instructors:  Martin Pansch\, Larry Wasmund\, Darryl Ponder\, Rob Murray\, Rick Wessling\, Marty Masters\nClass size: Maximum students: 10 Minimum: 5\nTongs\, while deceptively simple looking\, contain a lot of considerations in making them. They should fit the work\, fit your hand\, be long enough but not too long\, sturdy enough but not too heavy\, and constructed in a way that lasts despite heavy use. This class will look at these factors and more as we learn to make tongs using the classic 3-shoulder method. We will be forging flat bit tongs but the majority of the process will transfer to other types (bolt\, pick up\, box jaw\, etc). Students should have already completed the beginner class or equivalent. Techniques involved will include half-face blows\, forging to dimension\, drawing\, punching and riveting. We might play a little with striking for each other and drawing on the power hammer too. The goal is for students to leave with the knowledge needed to make any tongs they need in the future with little more than a hammer\, anvil\, forge and punch. NOTE: This class is on a Sunday\, not Saturday.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class:  Your favorite blacksmithing hammer\, ¼ to 3/8″ round punch if you have one. Flatters\, sledge hammer\, and hot rasp may also be used but don’t go buy them just for the class.\nSafety Equipment – safety glasses & ear plugs are mandatory.
