SUMMARY:Antikythera Mechanism Lecture
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion\, slide show\, and videos of the historic first model built of the world’s oldest  analog computer and orrery\, the Antikythera Mechanism. Included will be a brief history of its discovery\, explanation of its analysis\, description of the functions and features it includes\, as well as details on the methods used for construction.\nI was fortunate enough to spend a day in London with builder Michael Wright\, as he shared his model with me describing the unique features of how it operates\, explaining how he analyzed the fragments and then constructed the model\, plus showing me his workshop and the tools he used for the build\n— Dean Ziegenbein\nTo register for this lecture\, send a check for $10 made out to “Guild of Metalsmiths” to:\nChristina Dodge\n17645 Baugh St NW\nRamsey\, MN 55303\nQuestions: christina.guildmbr@gmail.com or 612-741-9292

SUMMARY:2018 Wire Inlay Class IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Martin Pansch\, Stephen Olivo \nThe class will focus on wire inlay into mild steel. This is a technique that can be used to add decorative elements to many of your projects. Students will chase grooves in the metal and then chase the bottoms of the grooves square. The two corners thus created will be chased to form an undercut channel. The upper edges of the channels will be chased and filed to create grooves of even width. Copper wire will be planished into the grooves so that the softer metal forms to fit the undercut and it locked in place. Surfaces will then be filed smooth leaving a pattern to show the differ color of the metals. Copper wire will be provided to practice inlay on flat pieces that can be held firmly in a vise.\nThis class will concentrate on the basics of the straight lines\, curved lines\, and dots. We’ll cover both wire that is filed flush with the surface of the steel and left as a raised bead.\nRequired Equipment: A basic set of small chisels will be provided for students for use in the class. Those over achievers who want to make their own prior to class can request detailed descriptions of the needed tools. Students will also need a light\, soft face hammer for striking tools.\nThis hammer should be light enough that thousands of blows will not be tiring. A cheap Chinese ball peen will likely need no softening. Additional tools include: A mill file\, a hack saw\, sand paper\, sharpening stones (a diamond lap plate works well)\, paper\, pencil\, Sharpie TM. Students may consider bringing a supplemental light source or other visual enhancement aids as needed.\nSafety Equipment – safety glasses & ear plugs mandatory.\nLunch Arrangements: Either bring a bag lunch with you or money for the fine dining establishments in the area.\nTo register for this class\, simply forward your interest\, a send a check for $55 made out to “Guild of Metalsmiths” and your complete contact info to:\nMartin Pansch\n201 Nevada Street\nNorthfield\, MN 55057\nCall or contact Martin at (612) 599-4762   or   blacksmithingyeti@gmail.com\nAcceptance priority for this class is determined by postmark.

SUMMARY:October 2017 Membership Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The October 11th Guild meeting will be held at the Jackson Street Roundhouse (193 W Pennsylvania Ave\, St Paul\, MN 55130).\nFor the meeting we will not plan for any demonstrations but invite all our members to bring in pieces of metalwork or other items that they have made or acquired over the years. We have just celebrated our 40th year\, so there is bound to be something not shown in awhile. Please remember items you have shown before have not been seen by everyone and especially newer members\, kind of an extended show and tell. Some folks have major collections others not yet; but if it intrigued you\, it will probably intrigue someone else. Incomplete works are great as well\, as much can be learned by seeing some of the stages along the way. We have been here before\, but maybe we will see and/or share something new.\nThe usual potluck (bring a dish to pass) begins at 6:30 pm\, with the business meeting\, and show and tell to happen after that. The champion for this meeting is Derrick Phillips. Contact him at derrick_phillips@q.com if you have questions.\nIf you’ve never been to this location\, it’s loaded with history and activities for the entire family. Check out the website here:  http://www.transportationmuseum.org The roundhouse itself is one of the last operating railroad roundhouses in the country. And inside the machine shop is the blacksmith shop created and developed by TGoM members\, principally Charlie Bateman\, Nick Heinen\, Gordon Barr\, and others.

SUMMARY:Clock Theory and the Blacksmith 2016
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Susan Wood\nThis class will include a lecture and images on how clock mechanisms are designed and built\, including the influence of the blacksmith in early clocks and tools. We will cover the evolution of escapements from foliot to pendulum to balance wheel. How sources of power influence the mechanism with weights springs fusee and Geneva stops. We will do the math of gear ratios and tooth profiles. There will be a look into time trains\, chime trains\, and strike trains and how they work together. We will look at how early clocks were hand-built\, then the first machines built by blacksmiths that clockmakers used. This will be a 2 to 3 hour class with lots of close up looks at different clocks and much room for questions and inspiration.\nBring: Pen/pencil\, notepad and maybe a calculator.\nSafety Equipment: none required\nRegister: to register for this class\, send a check for $15 made out to\nThe Guild of Metalsmiths to:\nMartin Pansch\n8750 Yale Avenue\nYoung America\, MN 55397\n(612) 599-4762\nblacksmithingyeti@gmail.com
