SUMMARY:Pipe Tongs Class 2026
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dave Gavin \nClass size: Maximum students: 8                   Minimum students: 4 \nClass Description: This years tongs are what I’m calling pipe tongs. They will hold pipe of nearly any size by one edge vs having one for each size of pipe that you might work with. They will also hold just about any size material. FYI – these work really well for working on bells once the end has been flared out\, as the jaws will reach over and not damage the flaring as you work on the rest of the bell. \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: favorite hammer\, ball peen hammer\, tongs to hold 3/8” – ½” round\, files \nSafety Equipment: (the usual for forging with coal: gloves\, safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.) \nOther Equipment: We will bring belt sander\, torch\, and specialty tooling to make one of the jaws. \nLunch Arrangements: On your own or local establishments \nTo register online\, go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact the class organizer\, email your address and phone number for additional information and to reserve your place. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually.

SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Bob Brown\, Dave & Jesse Gavin\, Herb Fick\, Wayne Olson\, George Auel \nClass size: Maximum students: 4                 Minimum students: 8 \nClass description: \nThis is Herb\, organizing yet another Handled Struck Tools Class for the day before the holiday party. We are electing Bob Brown to be our lead instructor this year. The Gavins\, Dave and Jesse\, are anxious to see how Bob would lead the workshop.\nWe will still use 4140 AN steel; 5/8 and ¾ diameter. We use this alloy because it is well known\, makes a good tool\, and makes a good example for teaching heat treating. The handle will be whatever Bob wants it to be as long as it uses 1018 rod. Special quench oil is supplied courtesy of the Northfield VFW. \nThe instructor’s goal for the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from nominal tool steel.  A secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We expect to have three treadle hammers of different styles available.\nHerb procures the stock and a literature package reviewing the heat treat principles and a bit of really ancient history. The principle reference used will be the book Steel Metallurgy for the non-metallurgist by John Verhoeven.   (ISBN-13: 978-0-87170-858-8) This year’s demonstrator at the fall conference\, Howard Clark\, made a contribution to that book and is a friend of Verhoeven. The book is available through the internet without charge. \nThis crew has offered the workshop for quite a few years. They have developed many ways to offer guidance on technique. Ask anyone who has taken the workshop. Rarely has anyone left the day with less than two working tools\, punch or chisel. \nA feature of this particular workshop is the use of treadle hammers. We usually have three or four available for the participants to try/use and we encourage participants to also try striking for each other. Or ask a helper to strike\, to get a feel of how this is done in demonstrations at fairs and shows. \nOn Saturday\, December 6 we gather at 8 AM at the MN School of Horseshoeing\, Ramsey Minn. We do introductions\, safety\, and review the literature that gets sent out when people register. Then at 9 AM we are in the shop. Lunch is brown bag\, or area restaurants. We usually are shut down at 5 PM. \n

SUMMARY:Viking Knife Class 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Peter Ellison \nViking Knife \nClass Description: This class’s goal is to introduce a smith to working with wrought iron and in the process make a couple of small projects: a hook and a small forge welded whittle tang knife that would have been common throughout the Viking era and beyond.  In the morning we will be getting used to working with wrought iron by drawing out some bar stock and making a hook.  In the afternoon forge welding high carbon steel to a bar of iron and then drawing out a tang and the blade to make a small forge welded knife.  Time permitting\, burn in a handle and heat treat the knife.\nThe skill level for the class is anyone who can maintain a coal fire\, work with tongs to draw out material\, minimal scrolling\, moderate hammer control\, forge welding experience is not required.  The class is not designed to be the first smithing experience.\nClass size: Maximum students:          8          Minimum students: 3 \nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: \n\n½” or ⅝” V bit tongs (able to grab ⅜” to ⅝” round and square stock)\n¼” V bit tongs (able to grab ¼“ round and square stock)\nForging hammer\nLight weight forging hammer\nCourse Wire Brush\n\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: gloves\, safety glasses\, hearing protection\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes. Note that wrought iron is worked very hot and there will be a lot of scale. \nTo register online\, go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact the class manager\, email your address and phone number (do not list personal address) for additional information and to reserve your place.

SUMMARY:Hammer Making Class 2025
DESCRIPTION:Instructors: Derrick Phillips & others\nClass size: Max 8\, min. 4\nClass Description: It is recommended that anyone wishing to take this class have taken at least a few days long beginners class\, and have several weeks of forging time. This will help ensure a certain comfort at the forge and with hot metal\, as this class works with a larger hot piece. This class will teach you the skills you need to make a basic rounding hammer. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of tool steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and add the handle. You will go home with your own hammer. There will be an assortment of weights to choose from so you can make a hammer to fit your size and needs. This is an intermediate skill level class\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: Bring your favorite hammers; one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. A tongs for holding 1-1/2″ square stock if you have that size\nSafety Equipment: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, respirator or dust mask for grinding\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nSpecial Instructions: This class can run late just to give a heads up\nLunch Arrangements: Bring your own lunch or eat at one of the local establishments. We will take an hour break around noon. \nTo register online go to The Guild of Metalsmiths website\, https://www.metalsmith.org/education\nOr to mail in a check\, contact Derrick Phillips at derrickphillipsa3o3@gmail.com to reserve a spot. \nAcceptance will be in the order submitted\, based on the online transaction date or postage date\, and each person will be notified individually. \n \n  \n

SUMMARY:Hammer Class 2024
DESCRIPTION:Hammer with anvil \nInstructor: Derrick Phillips and others\nClass size: Max 8\, min 4\nDescription: It is recommended that anyone wishing to take this class have taken at least a few days long beginners class\, and have several weeks of forging time. This is an intermediate skill level class. \nTools and other items to bring: Bring your favorite hammers: one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts. A tongs for holding 1-1/2″ square stock if you have that size.\nSafety equipment to bring: the usual for forging with coal: safety glasses\, hearing protection\, respirator or dust mask for grinding\, clothing of natural fiber with no cuffs or fraying\, and leather boots or shoes.\nTools and other items to bring: Bring your favorite hammers: one for striking hot metal and one for striking punches and drifts.
