DESCRIPTION:Instructors: JimMoenck\, Stephen Olivo and Rob Murrray \nClass size: Maximum students: 8 Minimum students: 6 \nThis class will teach you the skills you need to make a hammer. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and put the handle on. You will go home with your own hammer. There will be an assortment of weights to choose from so that you can make a hammer that fits you and your needs.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class: Bring your favorite hammers with you to class\, one for striking hot metal\, one for striking punches and drifts\, and a sledge for striking if you have one. All other tools will be furnished.\nSafety Equipment – The normal safety equipment is required. Wear cotton clothing\, leather boots above the ankle\, pants that fit over the top of your boots. Eye protection and ear protection is mandatory. Gloves for protection from the heat while punching may be useful. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jim Scott \nStruck tools \nClass size: 8 max\, 5 minimum\nThe day will include:\nPrepare a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch round stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools without handles. We will heat treat using oil. We will have trainers who offer all kinds of help including striking. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy. Students should have completed the Beginning Blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing (Tongs if you have them). A variety of Guild hammers will be available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools. Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools. We will focus on the use of color and on the use of oil to determine grain size\, hardness and temper.\nLet us know if you are short on physical strength and we will accommodate you with smaller stock and/or striking help. Parts include hinges\, bale handles with plates and cotter pins\, a hasp and staple and\, of course\, nails. The first day of class students will concentrate on making welded butterfly hinges and hasps. The second day of the class students will be taken through forging bale handles\, plates\, cotter pins and nails. This is a class for those with solid intermediate level skills. Students should be familiar with forge welding\, have good hammer control and be able to control where they spread their steel. Demonstration will be for basic functional hardware designs but students may choose to more decorative styles as their abilities and tolerance for risk allow.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class. DESCRIPTION:Handled Struck Tools Workshop\nMinimum six students. Maximum eight students.\nInstructors: Jesse Gavin\, lead\, assisted by Dave Gavin\, Herb Fick\, and probably others!\nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handle and chisels with a wire handle. We will offer the option to used treadle hammers supplied by the teaching staff. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied.\nSteel will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe goal of the workshop is to produce students comfortable with the process of forging and heat treating tools from tool steel. The secondary goal is to have the students comfortable with the use of treadle hammers. We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process. There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or to offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied by Duggan\, Gavin\, BtW © and Fick.\nBring your favorite hammers\, tongs suitable for the stock if you have them\, and eye and ear protection. Bring your basic safety gear (leather\, cotton\, gloves\, and safety shoes).\nThe building will be open by 8 am\, introductions and coffee will start at 8:30\, in the shop by 9 AM. DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Dave Mariette\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum: 5\nForge welding. So\, you’ve seen it done. It looked so easy. Why doesn’t it work for me\, you ask?\nDavid will seek to dispel the mythical mysticism that seems to surround this technique\, and give you the tools you need to begin forge welding. Like many things there is no magic bullet. It is a compilation of doing everything right\, not just one thing.\nStarting from the ground up learning to manage heat\, you’ll start with some basic welding\, and as you gain some experience moving in to a few more advanced welding configurations. Some solid basic forging experience would be beneficial.\nSafety Equipment – The usual. Eye and ear protection. No flammable clothing. Leather work boots. Since we are forge welding and there will be more sparks than usual\, students should dress with that in mind. DESCRIPTION:In an effort to give more new blacksmiths an opportunity to learn how to forge steel\, the Beginning Blacksmith class format has been modified and split into three separate classes. Students will need to sign up for each level separately. It is recommended that first time students begin with level 1\, then level 2\, then project classes before taking more advanced classes offered by the Guild (hammer making\, tongs\, struck tools\, etc\,). This path provides a common background skill set and terminology to improve the effectiveness of advanced classes. Students with prior experience can judge their proficiency and take the appropriate classes. \nBeginner Level 1 (offered Sept/Oct/Nov) is a 2 day class covering the basics of: Safety\, Tools\, Fire Control\, Forging Dynamics\, Tapers (ribbon\, fishtail\, point)\, Twisting\, Riveting\, Shouldering\, Upset\, Cutting\, Splitting\, Punching\nBeginner Level 2 (offered Dec/Jan/Feb) is a 1 day class covering Heat Treat\, Scrolling\, Bending\, Forge weld. This path provides a common background skill set and terminology to improve the effectiveness of advanced classes. Students with prior experience can judge their proficiency and take the appropriate classes. \nBeginner Level 1 (offered Sept/Oct/Nov) is a 2 day class covering the basics of: Safety\, Tools\, Fire Control\, Forging Dynamics\, Tapers (ribbon\, fishtail\, point)\, Twisting\, Riveting\, Shouldering\, Upset\, Cutting\, Splitting\, Punching\nBeginner Level 2 (offered Dec/Jan/Feb) is a 1 day class covering Heat Treat\, Scrolling\, Bending\, Forge weld. There are competing demands for the day.  (Mark Aspery joinery class and Armed Forces day demonstrations in Dundas for starters)  The MN School of Horseshoeing is available. Jim Scott may not be available. I (Herb) have been Jim’s apprentice for this class for the past several years and am willing to carry on if Jim cannot make it. This notice does not follow our 3 month class advertising requirements.  (That is an apology.)  If enough interest is forwarded soon\, we will carry on.  Do not send money yet.\nThe day will include:\nPrepare a punch\, a slitting chisel and a drift using approximately 5/8 inch round stock. We will fabricate normal length (6 to 8 inches) hand held tools without handles. We usually have strikers who offer all kinds of help. We will heat treat using oil. Material used will be GM automotive coil spring stock\, presumed to be 5160 alloy. Students should have completed the Beginning blacksmithing course or have suitable background experience.\nYou will need: your pet forging hammer\, a second hammer for striking tools\, hearing and eye protection and proper clothing (Tongs if you have them). A variety of hammers will be available for your trial.\nThis workshop is a valuable opportunity for practical hands-on training in the preparation and restoration of tools.  Blacksmiths need basic comfort with techniques used when restoring and heat treating tools.  We will focus on the use of color and the basic techniques used in heat treating. With this knowledge you will then be able to expand your tool chest with other handled tools. All handled tools such as top fullers\, punches and flatters start with this same process. We will begin with a piece of steel\, punch the eye\, shape both striking ends\, heat treat and put the handle on. You will go home with your own hammer. There will be an assortment of weights to choose from so that you can make a hammer that fits you and your needs. \nSafety Equipment: The normal safety equipment is required. Wear cotton clothing\, leather boots above the ankle\, pants that fit over the top of your boots. Eye protection and ear protection is mandatory. Gloves for protection from the heat while punching may be useful. A leather apron is encouraged for extra protection. \nTools & Equipment: Bring your favorite hammers with you to class\, one for striking hot metal\, one for striking punches and drifts\, and a sledge for striking if you have one. All other tools will be furnished. \nLunch arrangements: We will take a break at noon for lunch. SUMMARY:Handled Struck Tools Class 2016 IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructor: Jesse Gavin (lead) supported by Dave Gavin\, Herb Fick\, and others\nMinimum 6 students; maximum 8\nThe tools made will be punches with a wire handles and chisels with wire handles. We will use treadle hammers. (Find out if you really need one of these by trying them.) Tools for the treadle hammers will be supplied.\nSteel will be 5/8 and 3/4 inch round 4140 for the punches and chisels. Handles will be fabricated from ¼ and or 5/16 round CRS.\nThe exercise will include forging and basic heat treatment of the tools.  We forge in the morning\, heat treat and install handles after lunch.\nWe’ve accepted that most of the time is spent focusing on understanding the heat treat process.  There will be enough stock so we can encourage you to make a couple of serious mistakes and still go home with real tools to use or offer for the next “iron in the hat”.\nPower grinders are supplied by Duggan\, Gavin\, BtW © and Fick. We still have a couple of belts supplied by our abrasive friends at 3M.\nBring your favorite hammers\, tongs suitable for the stock if you have them\, and eye and ear protection.  Bring your basic safety gear (leather\, cotton\, gloves\, and safety shoes). SUMMARY:Tongs Class 2016 IS FULL!
DESCRIPTION:Instructors:  Martin Pansch\, Larry Wasmund\, Rick Wessling\, Marty Masters\, other exciting guest instructors to be determined later.\nMaximum students: 8\, Minimum 4\nTongs\, while deceptively simple looking\, contain a lot of considerations in making them. They should fit the work\, fit your hand\, be long enough but not too long\, sturdy enough but not too heavy\, and constructed in a way that lasts despite heavy use. This class will look at these factors and more as we learn to make tongs using the classic 3-shoulder method. Those with less experience will be encouraged to stick with flat bit tongs but the modifications needed for bolt\, pick up\, box jaw\, etc will be demonstrated and can be tried by the more bold. Students should have already completed the beginner class or equivalent. Techniques involved will include half-face blows\, forging to dimension\, drawing\, punching and riveting. We might play a little with striking for each other. The goal is for students to leave with the knowledge needed to make any tongs they need in the future with little more than a hammer\, anvil\, forge and punch.\nTools and Equipment or other items participants are to bring to the class.  Your favorite blacksmithing hammer\, ¼ to 3/8″ round punch if you have one. Flatters\, sledge hammer\, and hot rasp may also be used but don’t go buy them just for the class.\nSafety Equipment – safety glasses & ear plugs are mandatory.
